We need to rebalance the list with some genuine closing speed and skill.

The lumbering oaf parade works beautifully on the back of Curnow and McKay when things are going our way but gets smashed when we lose control of clearances.

Other than the desperate need for a 2nd KPD option that's our biggest need
That's obviously true on face value but I argue that that is a symptom and not the disease. We don't want to go treating the symptoms while ignoring the cause.

lt has become very clear our two priorities are more outside run in the midfield & tall defender.

These are now major areas of concern & last year's finish may have glossed over a number of list deficiencies.
l think there will be more list changes than many have been suggesting, big test for the list management team.

What can Austin do mid year?

What did he do last year to address this? Or the year before?

2022 we draft Ollie Hollands, Cowan, Binns and a late hail mary with Lemmey
2023 we draft Moir, Wilson, and Matt Carroll

Trades and free agency, he's brought in Cerra, Hewett, Saad and Elijah Hollands.

Can Austin even recognise tall talent? I have no idea.

Every tall we have in the VFL is a project player on a 5 year plan.

Not just endurance outside run. Cottrell, Ollie and Elijah all racked up plenty of miles tonight ... but none of it goes anywhere in terms of winning a game. Outside pace is what we need, and a little bit of inside burst as well.

Our issue is that we are committed to the twins, an inside mid with average pace who can also go outside, and a half back who can play outside mid but also not express. That's our draft done.

Then all of our money is tied up in two key forwards, two midfielders, a full back and a ruckman still looking to get paid, so even if we had the draft capital to get some quality pace from another side, we can't afford to pay them.

We are in a bit of a spot here.

We need to chase Conor Stone from the Giants. VIC boy currently OOC. Medium forward who can play midfield. That takes 1 small forward out of our game day and adds a player about to explode to the next level and creates a better forward line and helps out our mids in rotations. Probably a future 2nd or maybe a little more re a upgrade.

We definitely need a key back from somewhere but if we score enough goals, does it matter? We went into round 20 sitting 2nd on the ladder so we clearly have been doing most things right.

I think our forward line is a problem. Yes we have Charlie and Harry but we are tall then small and if things donā€™t go our way, the smalls are literally non existent. We need better players in our front half that can take big grabs and lock it in.

If we have the funds, Iā€™d certainly chase Shai Bolton. Put this years 1st and next years 1st on the table. I can tell you now, the following forward line kicks a winning score 9.5 times out of 10 and adds more to our midfield rotations.

HB: EHollands Charlie Stone
F: Motlop Harry Bolton
Bench: JSOS, Fogarty

Again though, he is another endurance footballer with footy smarts and no burst speed. He's Elijah Hollands.

Conor Stone?

Either way he certainly would improve our team and we shouldnā€™t shy away from making sure we improve our forward line and midfield this off season.

If McKay, TDK, Williams, Boyd and Stone play tonight, we thump Port and most likely secure a home final

What can Austin do mid year?

Nothing. But why couldnt he see this.

  • S Durdin 1 game, 0 games, 1 game in 3 years.
  • Kemp undersized and not a KDfers backside
  • Young a fake player that he should have known
  • Austin has missed two trade periods to snag a 2nd key defender.
  • Marchbank an interceptor like McGovern and always injured

So there is no blame on Austin if he has zero insight skills. But I'm guessing list manager's are supposed to have these skills right?

I have posts going back 2 seasons on the defenders not being defenders. All being intercept types.

It doesn't address a need though, not really. Unless we trade Martin and he is the replacement. We have no currency and what little we do have, we need to fill some gaping holes with it.

Is it time to go all in on Tom Barrass???

Martin is not reliable. So Stone certainly addresses a forward need as well as chimes in to the midfield and gives Cripps/Walsh etc an extra break.

Whoever gets Stone will be very happy, trust me

In Young's first year at the club, we were all singing his praises - comparing him to Liam Jones, bargain basement KPD at pick 52, still only 23yo etc etc.

How the **** is it Austin's fault that he's fallen off a cliff in recent years???

While it's great that we will add the Campo boys, they are essentially role players.

Lucas will likely play as a defender and or defensive wingman. Ben is still a conundrum, tall inside mid, more likely to grow and be a 3rd tall

So, it hasn't really changed in years

KPD, tall, tough, athletic, uncompromising. McGovern or McDonald and draft a young KPD. Or be bold and target Harry Edwards type

Speed through the middle and or the edges

Only 2 players, but it would transform this team

Like every, single, year, 8-9 changes

Kemp is more a traditional flanker : stop trying to turn him into a KPD.
Stop neglecting the opportunity to recruit viable long term KPD because we have a couple of names on the list that can be deployed there if we get desperate.
Continuing to hold on to players in the hope that they eventually come good just ends up clogging the list & killing any trade value that they may have had..
We've got some elite talent to be genuine contenders for the foreseeable future, we need to continue to churn the list to ensure we can continue to replenish it.

The point is that he was an inexperienced bargain basement pickup from Austin's old club. He wasn't exactly highly rated there. I'd say Austin had something to do with him being drafted originally.

We are not exactly spending draft currency to pick up known quality. Young looked good in a side that was not contending. When we start contending, he couldn't go with us. We saw this last year. Not his fault that Young has fallen in a hole after one good year. We can't sit on our hands hoping he finds that form again though.

This was the worst time to be committed to two father sons at the top of the draft, when our needs are different. It's why I didn't really understand our drafting the last couple of years knowing this was coming up. In a couple of years when Cody Walker comes through though, that's a little different. He's fit in well.

He was a cheapish cast-off from a side looking for KPD, it was an unusual acquisition.
The issues that people now groan about were present at the time too.

Teams would kill for a tall, athletic flanker. We used to pray for one. We get one and we think he's a key position player or bust.
