Dev has a bit if work to do to make a significant and consistent contribution in the seniors.

Imo his two biggest weaknesses which we can’t afford to carry are lack of composure and very two touch fumbly. Compare that to Kai who is relatively composed and clean in only his first real full game?

I reckon maturity and confidence fixes a lot of those 2. Can't do much about the first, and the second is hard to when you are fringe. Hopefully with the passage of time both happen at once.

The club said a couple of months ago we would pay Hugh whatever he wants. Its not too long a bow to draw to understand that means we would almost certainly match.

Whoever comes for Hugh, we will beast them. Full ****ing beast.

the last major pieces we lost were rockcliff and beams

rockcliff was pretty much half shown out the door

beams i think the club would look back and quietly be very happy we got what we did, when we did.

since then we have only really lost role players or fringe 22 guys. i think we might continue to lose the occasional draftee who doesnt acclimatise to brisbane as we would have hoped, but the days of established players we want to keep leaving has long since passed IMO

I do think it’s a bit spooky that we’re starting to hear some sabre rattling around trade negotiations when most of the talk up until this point has been around how Hugh is definitely staying.

when theres a weekly podcast subsisded by the AFL to discuss trade and free agency i would hazard a guess that the majority of the stories produced this far out from trade period would be conjecture at best.

gotta have something to talk about.

They need to properly test the market. I'm planning on increasing the frequency and sound with which I cheer Hugh at games to try and get it over the line for the club.

If I was Hugh's manager I'd be holding out for more money too.
Surely our squad is at the point where they are taking slightly unders (or at least not overs) to help keep this squad together and enable more sustained success.

I think the difficult thing might be that big jump in the cap means the line is blurred a little when it comes to what is a fair price for the club to pay.

one thing i think would be interesting for our list management would be how many of our contracts had pay rises tied to the CBA increase.

think i read here that we as a rule were one of the clubs that did not incorporate such clauses into our contracts.

would make the contracts the likes that Payne, Dunkley, Hipwood, Daniher are on very very good value for money

dunkley for example was reported to have signed for about 750k a year... that contract looks like some tidy business by the club if its value stayed the same despite the csap increasing.

"Hi Brisbane, I'm keen to stay. My manager has received offers if 1.3 million a year. Happy to negotiate A reasonable fee for my services but FYI"

"Hi Hugh, sounds good let's work it out."

I'm more concerned how we're going to afford the 2 Million dollar man Cam Rayner

Saints, Adelaide and Essendon should be fine to ward off. No one wants to play for them.

Geelong has genuine brown paper bags though, strong culture and a comparable lifestyle for our Hugh. Concerning.

Beast as in this beast?

Been said already, Hugh is staying - Unless he pulls a Schache, re-signs and then requests a trade.

Berry has received interest from Geelong and Port. Port looking to replace Boak and Wines, who is almost a certainty to leave unless he gets the inside role back permanently.

Preuss/Moyle are two rucks that we’re actively chasing.

Lane gone, Smith has interest from both SA clubs - be surprised if he leaves.

LIONS MAKE BERRY MOVE

BRISBANE has tabled a contract offer to keep free agent Jarrod Berry as the experienced midfielder weighs his decision.

The Lions are understood to have put forward a multi-year deal to Berry, who is one of only nine restricted free agents remaining in the competition for this season.

The 26-year-old is firmly entrenched in Queensland, where his younger brother Thomas is playing at Gold Coast, with contract talks expected to pick up in coming weeks.

Other clubs have been monitoring Berry, who has spent time on the wing with other centre square midfielders preferred at the Lions through this season, and he has played every game so far this season.

Brisbane has two restricted free agents – Berry and star midfielder Hugh McCluggage – it is aiming to re-sign, with McCluggage not rushing into a decision as rivals come with mega offers for him. – Callum Twomey

I would definitely go Moyle over Preuss, lot younger and just as "good" IMO, only if we delist Kalin Lane though, too many pure rucks on the list if we keep Lane and get Moyle.

Omg no Preuss sorry. That guy is a perennial injury ward occupier but because he's tall and has a big frame has managed to carry on until now. North Melbourne to Demons to GWS - he might eventually put a bunch of games together somewhere.

He's a classic conman who calls himself ruck - 10 year career and 28 games to show for.

Why the heck are we chasing these two when we have Smith and Fort?
We are looking for a permanent replacement for Oscar as no 1 ruck, I for 1 can’t confidently say that that player is currently on the list.
Fort is a great backup but that is likely all he will be, Smith is still very raw and as Cotter said we are rightly taking our time with, so is still a couple of years away from being ready. Lane will be gone at the end of the year.

Out and out no to Preuss, but Moyle would be a good pickup.
Really liked what I see from Xerri would take him in a heart beat.

Fort is 31 this year lol

Fort is older than Oscar and both are off contract at the same time next year. If anything, you'd think Oscar would be more likely to get an extra year, with Fort either retiring / delisted at that time.

Either way, ruck is a position that we will need some depth in at worst over the next 18 months, particularly with one of the 2 mentioned above (possibly both) gone next year, and Lane seemingly gone this year.
