Game Day 2024 Trade Period - Lian Yu - that liminal space between trade and draft.

They did sit back and zone off a bit much. I didn't think letting Brisbane chip the ball in there back 50 hurt Sydney ,then next thing you know they have a goal.

I still feel we go down the line too much.

Who from our team could kick the ball between 3 opposition even with time and low pressure.
Under low pressure? Heaps of players. If you need evidence of how we can shred teams if they let us do that, watch the first Dees game.

But, I don't think its meaningful, because most teams won't let you do that in a GF, at least not for as long as the Swans did.

It’s moot anyway. We need lots of different woods depending on the situation. We should be masters of adaptability. Have a counter for whatever comes at us, with a clear plan on how to turn whatever that is into attack and drill that into the players repeatedly until it’s as natural as breathing.

I’m still waiting for JL to reveal his hidden genius. I don’t think it exists. Prove me wrong, please.

Good points you make.

I think generally on Bigfooty we talk about how if we could only replace player A and B with player C and D it would make all the difference in winning that elusive flag.

When in reality it is as much about coaching, teamwork, work ethic, club culture and all those intangibles which are just as important but are resistant to quick fixes at the draft/trade/selection table.

Very well put DockerDerek:

While the trade table might bring in a star player occasionally and our draft hand may bring in some talent who develop into valuable team members there is so much more that we can do right now to improve.

Darcy needs to get fit. Jackson needs to be only the second ruckman and never number one ruck. Most of our forwards need to improve their defensive efforts. We need to phase out Walters, Fyfe and JOM in favour of younger players. We need to find a way to remedy our slow starts. We need to remedy our 4th quarter fade outs in close games.

These are just a few things that will have just as much influence on our results as bringing in stars or drafting guns.

I am all for getting A grade talent into the club but equally keen that we explore every opportunity to develop what we already have. Bring on 2025.

If Sydney somehow sack Longmire we should get in there immediately. You can’t tell me, them not venturing to the MCG enough and playing on such a small ground doesn’t hinder them on the last day of September! Longmire is a fantastic coach a regularly gets them to the pointy end.

I feel like Swans list is very overrated especially their defence and fwds. Got them to minor Premiership with those 3 hacks up front. That is good going. Honestly those 3 wouldn’t get a game over Amiss, Treacy and Jackson.

Watching Brisbane pick the zone a part was a thing of beauty.

And it super frustrating watching us go down the line again and again.

Do we have class in our back half to pick zones a part.
Brisvegas only moved away from going down the line as their standard plan because they were too dependent on their (too regularly flaky) talent doing it for them. And they did that very late and only as option B.

But all sides will have "kick down to the big men" as a get-out option. We were much more in the group that would favour breaking lines through handball-run though.

They're very much a talent-driving-gameplay, so were one of the more anachronistic strategy teams. Fagan is more a relationships coach than a strategy based coach.

I reckon their win yesterday was as much on Sydney being off as anything else. As the game wore on, the Lions' confidence flowed as the Swans' confidence ebbed.

In an even competition, is it too simple to say the finishing position of the first ten sides correlates closely to a ranking of their coaches?

Longmire is also very good with the players.
If he is moved on from Sydney, I feel we should do whatever we can to get him.

Longmire is a double threat, good with player relationships and good with strategy.

Us getting him would be a good ambition, but he'd have a big queue of suitors that would be less disruptive to his current life than moving here.

Can you please ask this on the Port Adelaide board? 😂

For what it's worth (not much), I think Ken is a really good coach with an average list after the top handful of players

My mail today before the game was Warner/Dean cox could very well be a package deal go WC next year.

Its potentially why WC have been holding off announcing there coach.

The Cox denials is just PR spin to make the scent go away so there was no chatter during the Swans finals campaign

I suspect though today's result may force Sydney into a succession plan for 2026 with Cox to take over.

It's now or never for the Swans to make there move is Cox the man to take over after Longmire or not

I suspect Dean's management will ask the question now of Sydney how much longer do they want him to wait.
I suggest you place that mail back in the envelope and set it on fire.

Watching the podcast with JL… he’s not it.
Been saying this. Massively underachieved the last 2 years and now we are going to waste another season before finding a replacement. This group with 2 years less experience finished 5th and won a final in 22. Lobb Mundy Tabs and Colyer missing from that team?

Eagles brought Sam Mitchel in a mentor role/ player , they won a flag. Brisbane brought Cotchin a mentor , they got a flag. Who we can bring? JLO can bring Pendleberry when he retires?

Add Hodge as well who assisted the rise from not making the 8 to a top 4 team.

Murphy has gone back to Victoria and getting in a "culture guy" would be a smart move.

One of the best parts about the trade stuff taking over is their should be a bunch of other journalists we can read/listen to rather than Ralph.

And Acres and Schultz?

Lobb and Tabs were top 10 contested marks. As maligned as they were it was still a massive loss structurally when Lobb left and Tabs body failed him. This exodus on top of Hogan going?

2022 Mundy was outplaying 2024 MJ but club wanted to put games into youth.

Haven’t yet replaced Schultz.

NOD injured so couldn’t replace Acres.

Clubs need a few seasons of stability to be challenging and our flux of changes has impacted us but plenty of reasons to be optimistic.

Luke Ryan doesn't get in the AA team picking out and hitting a target mate. BOMB IT DOWN THE LINE.

Stability is the key.

We have got the list to win it, and all attempts should be made to keep it together
