Game Day 2024 Trade Period - Lian Yu - that liminal space between trade and draft.

I don’t think Bolton would risk his financial security.

Pick 9 only Freo wins, doubt Richmond do it

Pick 9 and 16 slightly favours Richmond on historical trade value

Pick 9 and 10 Freo loses
Careful what you say on here Jessie’s you’ll get your head taken right off

Trading F1 sounded about as reasonable as most of the crap that gets flung around these parts particularly if Kozzie is off the cards
Even if he wasn’t perhaps it would fit Melbourne or some other clubs profile to get a top 5 pick next year

Everyone getting so sucked into this whole “ this is the greatest draft of all time “ , who says next years top 10 are going to be no good ? footy players seem to improve every year

I have no f*n clue but the ranting and debasing here gets bloody tiring .

Jeezus f*k I keep logging on here hoping to see some kind of actual news on trades but it’s just dribble , can’t wait till this is over .

You're logging on here the week before trade week and wanting actual news?

Don't tune into Trade Radio ....you may not survive.

I will take bets if it’s more than pick 9 on its own what ever Richmond’s 2nd is will come back our way and there will 100% be late pick swaps done.

Richmond will have so many top 30 picks anything else is useless to them
What is more than 9? If it is adding 10 then yep 21 coming back at least. I don't think we get anything back with adding 16 maybe 41 or F3 if Richmond are feeling generous. He is contracted.

Yep I did the first 2 days and then tuned out
How the hell do those guys just talk bullshit all day for days on end ?
Fascinating

I enjoy the back and forth and understanding what perceived value looks like, fills the gaps waiting for something real. I note the equivalent thread in 2013 lasted 64 pages :), more fun making grand finals obviously. I asked what people would do if North come knocking and I think they will based on some of the noise, makes sense for them to load up this year. There is risk everywhere in trading.

Must say though that this Oliver news is very interesting
Feels like it could be a crack in the dam wall that gives and Melbourne just starts to unravel over the next 2 years

Was over on the ladder prediction thread and interestingly most people have Melbourne around 12-16th next year myself included.

If Geelong take on that contract in whole then F2 is completely fine. On the flipside Melbourne in no shape or form should de-risk this contract by taking on any salary.

Was thinking about this today , man he is currently such a liability to Melbourne , Geelong don’t play that game ( or maybe they do with coastal real estate )
In cold hard currency Feels like Saints might be better placed to take Oliver , would fit well there and RTB wouldn’t stand for his crap .

I reckon Petracca will give it a year and if Melbourne start to implode he’s gone to the Pies or Blues .

Anyone who thinks we should trade for an extra F1 next year knows nothing about AFL trading obviously.

Presumably the idea is to stockpile draft capital for Chad Warner? What a dumb idea.

Firstly all we need is a single first round pick (our own will be fine) to get into the picture for Warner next year. We would also have our 2026 R1 pick available.

In the AFL the player picks the club they want to go to and that’s it. A deal then gets done with whatever draft capital teams have available.
Unless it’s completely and ridiculously out of the required range a deal inevitably gets done.

If Collingwood had pick 10 this year - Petracca would be going there. They have nothing but next years F1 so that’s a rare example where not enough capital is in the hands of the buying club.

You will notice something in the AFL - the really big clubs, the ones in perennial finals recently - I’m talking Geelong, pies, even Brisbane the last few years, none of these teams are stockpiling future picks to please a rival club. That is the mindset of a weak, passive, minnow club.

The only ones laughing will be Sydney if we trade for an F1.

Take geelong - they knew Bailey smith was coming to them over 12 months ago. Was Andrew Mackie sitting around last year saying “oh gosh let’s get an extra R1 pick next year to please the Bulldogs”?

Was he ****.

They spent every bit of capital they had, used pick 11 on Conor o Sullivan.
As for the bulldogs? They will have to just suck it up and take pick 15.

Imagine for a second the roles were reversed. Let’s say Hayden Young had one year remaining on his deal and every one knew that he wanted to get to Carlton next year.
Do we really think Carlton would be trading out of this draft into next year so they could give us an extra pick next year? Even better - from north Melbourne, so probably a future top 5 pick?
You must be joking. Carlton would not give a rats ass about us. They won’t even put pick 11 on the table this year for a dual AA in Houston!

Use the picks this year on trades or draft selections.
We need one pick in the first 18 selections next year to be able to trade for the chad if he nominates us. That’s all. Anything more than that is a waste of draft capital.
Hear, hear. 11 out of 10 post.

Can we pin this to the thread please?

Personally I wouldn’t have Allan as a top target. Got nothing to do with him not being a quality prospect, but I just think we have bigger needs. Allan doesn’t really offer much that Johnson, O’Driscoll and Erasmus don’t already give us.

Others around the same mark offer far better skills, speed or goal kicking. All things I would target first.

I’d probably trade that pick for a future first, target someone like Davis or Oliver with our first live pick and then Urquhart later as midfield depth - rather than just take Allan.
I read on one of the draft social media groups I follow they are saying Urquhart could be a late bolter as he's reportedly had a massive growth spurt. A year ago he was listed at 183cm, then 190cm at the start of the year and 195cm now. He could be a terrific tall wingman potentially as he has some great athleticism. He is currently predicted to go around where our Saints second round will be taken after bidding but he's jumped a lot in recent times so he could go earlier.

Last year at this time it was mentioned on many of the sites we'd interview Simpson more than any team as well as Mannagh. In recent times the four players we've been linked to the most (in terms of doing interviews) are Berry( not surprisingly) Oliver, Lindsay and also Jobe Shanahan. In my opinion all 4 of those players fill needs on our list. I really like Shanahan more than most because of how he's a wonderful kick for goal by the looks. I think if we got him long term we could then use Jackson more as a midfielder who also plays forward (when a tall forward is on the bench) and ruck while having great set shots in our forward line with Amiss (he'll come good) Cyclone, Sturt and Shannahan.

Either Lindsay or Oliver would be great for us too as we need more class off half back. Apparently we've been super keen on Oliver all year.

Why do you think we’re moving picks forward simply to get Warner?

Why can’t it be to get Kosi & Warner? Why can’t it be to get a better pick?

Also if we use all our draft capital this year - you assume the convo is -

Us: We’ve got 1 first rounder take it or leave it?

Sydney: We want your 2nd and your Future 1st

Us: Nope - take it or leave it

However if we move any picks forward- the convo is -

Us: We’re only trading our first rounder take it or leave it

Sydney: No - all your picks

Us: OK - take them all

For all the overhyped b/s on the deathrider thread and what not we would of at least made the top 4 this year and be red hot in the betting for next year if we could just go back in time and put shooter , blakers and Lord Meek in the team , trade Darcy and avoid JOM altogether

no one will ever convince me otherwise

This is where the re-litigating past moves reaches the tipping point. Do we also discuss what would've happened if we had Sam Collins or even Joel Hamling this year instead of Brennan Cox or Alex Pearce because availability? Like if you use trade hypotheticals to undo injuries for any team, you'd probably make them significantly better.

Beyond that, I think everyone acknowledges we messed up with Acres because we saw his 2022 as an exception rather than a new normal (not the worst thing in the world coz he's still butchery as hell, but the bar is "Are you a better winger than 1 of Banfield, JOM or Johnson?" to improve the team). Schultz I agree we kinda get lost in the pick stuff: still made the right decision to trade him a year early, but it came at the cost of Tom Emmett and the like getting consistent games up fwd. We make finals if we hold off on that one for sure.

JOM also gets a fair bit of unnecessary hate imo. I don't love the move: we got in a predominant inside mid (relatively versatile) who got in the way of some players in his first year, and by his 2nd year of a 4 year deal had to be moved to the wing for the most part. But if he wasn't best 22...he wouldn't be playing. JL can be cautious in changing things up, but once it's evidenced that something's not working he'll change it up. JOM out of inside mid rotation, Aish being dropped for Wagner, Voss overtaking Tabs as the first replacement key fwd, Young's role changing as the season went on from more defensive to more attacking, etc. If the guys behind JOM want his spot, it's there to take. But right now JOM is ahead of them.

The length of contract is a bit of an issue for sure, but I actually like having older players like that around. Sonny, Fyfe, JOM, Aish somewhat fits this too. They have the experience to give pointers, but importantly they set a bar to get into the team that's a challenge, but not an insurmountable one. I hope next year guys like Raz, NOD, Johnson (more for inside minutes specifically), Simpson, Draper, etc are looking at those players plus some of the fringe best 22 mid-range age guys and thinking "I have you covered, and it's only a matter of time before JL sees that".

Lobb is more important than all of those, and especially if you're including long bomb Acres. Many of Acres kicks for us ended up hitting Lobb's hands and resetting for a stoppage. We did not have the marking power to handle that in the later part of this season.

Looks like Melbourne are digging in.

Holding Oliver now.

Be interesting to see where this all finishes
Does this club know what they are doing?

Pretty bad look letting Oliver leave and yet when you have players wanting to leave for family reasons you hold them.

Curtis Taylor as an SSP train on?
Nothing special, but solid depth.

You make some good points...
ALSO
I can't help but notice that we have such a strong draft hand this year because of smart trading for future picks.

If bargain F1/2s are available it doesn't mean they will all end up at Sydney.

Curtis Taylor as an SSP train on?
Nothing special, but solid depth.

I wouldn't mind if we got him over to train with a few WAFL, SANFL, VFL players, and the best player is kept.

In reality, if we keep Emmett, which looks likely we probably won't have list space for it.

Current list space is between 4 and 6 players on main list.

Bolton, Pick 10, 27 takes up 3.

We normally like to have the maximum number of players on the rookie list to save cash, so it really only allows us 1 more spot, unless we put him on the rookie list.

Anyone know how the two Irishmen are going?
