I swear 1 good game on the weekend from Treacy and people jump off Mcdonald. Do we not remember the Port Adelaide game with Treacy? 😅
There's every chance Treacy kicks 20 less goals than McDonald this year but pre-season games are not indicators of anything.

That's the problem, you dont get to tell McDonald, we THINK we want you but Josh looks really good, just wait a bit and we'll see how it all plays out.

The club has made a decision and the decision is to get McDonald, so, whats the plan?

I think you just pull out, and hope it does hurt bringing in future recruits.

In fairness, unless he had committed to the club, he could choose to sign with the Swans at any time.

If he has committed, then it becomes a lot harder.

Feel like that would make it harder to get Warner if we've been chasing him hard (we have) and then say, sorry, we're out. Wouldnt reflect well on us

Go hard at Warner. Spend whatever first rounders you have to. If we get him this team will have a midfield that will go a long way. Not sold on McDonald, especially if he comes with big salary and draft capital.

Freo girl won’t like this, but we could play McDonald as an oversized medium tall, fill our biggest list gap with a hard running goal kicker. Sturt and Banfield would both miss out though.
We would have injury cover for the ruck (Jackson and Treacy) or KPF (Treacy and McDonald) if Darcy or Amiss are unavailable.
If all 5 of Darcy, Jackson, Amiss, Treacy and McDonald play it gives us flexibility to rotate roles, Jackson plays forward whenever Treacy, Amiss or McDonald are on the bench, he plays ruck when Darcy is on the bench, he plays mid when all the other 4 are on the ground.
McDonald becomes our Fritch

Do you mean our last preseason game? If so I remember it well, Treacy without Amiss and Jackson, up against Aliir and Ratugolea. That's our 21yo 3rd tall with 36 games up against a 29yo 131 games and 25yo 75 games. Unsurprisingly Treacy was given a bath but I don't think it told us much about where he is at as a player.

How many goals does JT need to kick for us to pull the plug on getting Logan.. 30?, 40? More?

We did just sign JT on a big contract last year so surely keeping him is part of our plans. If he did wanna walk I’d wish him all the best but would be asking for something decent in return.

Any chance Sydney would do a trade of LMac and JT plus a few picks going either way?

I won’t be fooled by a preseason game ever again (or at least until next preseason), they don’t matter. Treacy just had his best game for the club and it was against decent opposition, the plan for what they want to do with all the talls should be discussed because it’s interesting at the very least.

Maybe Treacy doesn’t get to even 20 still but if he keeps setting up goals for others and kicks over 30 at his age it’s an interesting list management decision ahead.

I think Jackson as 1st ruck with JT is good on a dry, fast deck but come full winter, slogging in out in cold rain with lots of stoppage play I want Darcy all day.

Jackson can do whatever he wants. He’d be great on a wing taking link up marks out of defense, drifting forward like he does for a couple of hangers & goals, attending some bounces. His basketball smarts make him deadly in scrimmage for the ball. Especially with Fyfe as they have the reach of 3 men between them & they’re both one touch.

No coincidence Serong went nuts when he didn’t have to burrow in & get it all the time & Young/Brayshaw could both be receivers more often.

If we were 100% on getting Macca we should have traded Darcy out. People are underestimating the salary cap squeeze we are going to experience if we land Macca. We have an estimated $1 million in cap space and Macca will take $800k+ of that. If people think we have a premiership list than it shouldn't matter. If you believe we need another star player than it becomes more difficult. If we heavily front loaded Jackson and Macca's contract (small chance of them requesting a trade out) we could maybe create enough room to lure a player.

C'mon dude, you have no idea what the salary cap status looks like. Speculation from the outside and saying that we should have traded Darcy is just silly.

Where are you getting those numbers from?

I mean yeah i get that but im not gonna judge him off last weeks game just as much as I’am not gonna judge him off the pre season game.

He Has to be doing that consistently to stop us going after Mcdonald I feel

Well let's keep an eye out for extensions for players already contracted for 2025 then as that will resolve any issue on retention.

Brayshaw the key one.

I have legitimately no mail, I have not been as steadfast on others that Jackson isnt actually best just playing ruck. I am happy for Jackson to keep playing the unicorn role anyway because he's awesome and a point of difference. I would like to know the plan for chasing McDonald is because I feel the only things that make relative sense is
A) Pushing Treacy out
B) Playing Jackson almost exclusively on ball in some way.

Treacy is off to a good start getting to 30 goals, if he gets there, it raises even more questions
Theres almost always going to be someone unavailable from that ruck/midfielder/forward group.
Jackson is the unicorn, Treacy can fwd/ruck and Darcy ruck/fwd.
Thats a lot of bang for buck right there.
How versatile is McDonald?
Is he worth the price?
Same old...same old.

My whole point is there is no stopping, so there must be plan on how it will work and it has to be regardless of whether they actually get him or not because they have been chasing him regardless.

Jackson looked pretty good jumping all over the Big O early on but he was evening it up towards the end I thought. I don't know if the final gap of 0 hitouts between the two sides was in our favour earlier in the match, but I do remember noting up on the board we were +12 clearances 28 to 16 (I.E. nearly double) at one point, but it finished 41-34.

We'll be glad we still have Darcy when rucking against the best / 4th quarters. The other thing is players are not cash. We couldn't take Darcycoin and convert it into another player of similar value with any kind of certainty. Likely instead we'd have taken a haircut on it and damaged team cohesion at the same time.

Or put another way people complaining about resigning Darcy should leave the #$%^! off about it.
Spot on Paracleet.
Darcy AND Jackson are the killer ruck combo!
And at the centre of the beating heart of the team!
YOKAI!

Lets accept at the very least, Freo is throwing everything at McDonald and they clearly clearly want him. What do you think is the plan for Freo next year with all of Treacy, McDonald, Amiss, Darcy and Jackson?

If the answer is Jackson on ball more, do we still think Jackson plays his best footy as a mid? I cant help but think a lot of the benefit of Jackson onball is being absurdly more athletic than the ruck so just dominates them once the ball hits the ground and around the ground. Do we get this benefit if he's on ball?
Treacy would be backup for when any of the other 4 are out. We would always play 4 of those 5, so it’s likely on average he’d play at least a dozen games a year (he would have kept cox out of the forward line this week for example).

Every good team needs good backup, and he’d be relatively cheap.

Probably correct, if he kicks 30+ goals would you listen to offers for him?

I should have said these numbers are based on a poster's estimates on this board. I did some of my own rough calculations and I estimate that our top 6 players control 1/3rd of the total salary cap so I think they could be close. But you are both right, I'm being a nuffie as we simply don't know as outsiders! I just don't want the club to **** up when we are so close to becoming contenders.

No, personally I think he’s too valuable as backup to lose.

In my mind Lmac is a 50+ forward if he’s in our team, and he also takes some defensive focus away from Amiss who should then be good for more. JJ good for 80, JL more like 105+

Simplistically LMac in, Tabs out

I know Treacy will be costing more than tabs, but you need quality as next man up if you want to be top 4.

It’s a good question. Been thinking this a fair bit. If treacy has a breakout year, what happens then if McDonald says yes?
