That's the problem, you dont get to tell McDonald, we THINK we want you but Josh looks really good, just wait a bit and we'll see how it all plays out.

The club has made a decision and the decision is to get McDonald, so, whats the plan?
We can still back out of the deal even if we say we are 100% committed to him. But he will hate us for it...

The interesting thing in all of this is Treacy is signed until end 2026. So at minimum you have a year to work it out, probably even two. Whether that's trying all of them or JT going back with a view to replacing Pearce or one being perma-injured or whatever.

This whole discussion is really predicated on Treacy hitting around the 30 mark though isn't it.

The interesting comparison will be the hit out differential though. If McDonald kicks 50 without taking any ruck time as the #1 target, what's the threshold for equivalence with Treacy who is rucking and playing further up the ground?

Good backup players staying good backup players is a fantasy unless they have no interest in leaving WA or they’re genuinely not enough to be best 22 elsewhere tbh.

If they’re good enough to be best 22 elsewhere, the salary cap and/or opportunity will mean they eventually move elsewhere. More opportunity means more money in most cases - most fringe players are driven by one or the other if not both.

If Treacy kicks 30+ goals and we get McDonald we might be able to sell that five KPFs/rucks will work but if it doesn’t Treacy or perhaps Darcy (stranger things have happened - look at Grundy at Collingwood) won’t be on our list long. It’d simply be too much talent for other sides to not offer something much better.

Treacy is quite versatile. 195cm plays ruck quite a bit with Peel and got himself 12 hit outs on Sun. No reason why he wouldn’t be a decent KPD either.

If we trade in Logan McDonald I see no reason why Treacy wouldn’t get good opportunity to play KPF, pinch hit ruck or KPD with McDonald in the team.

100% agree .. Treacy would be a fantastic CHB like Steven may.. pace, physicallly imposing and 195cm

By 2026 will be trading Brennan cox for Daniel Curtin

Feel like that would make it harder to get Warner if we've been chasing him hard (we have) and then say, sorry, we're out. Wouldnt reflect well on us
Unless he's already committed to us, I don't think he can be too unhappy if we change our minds. Clubs need to make plans, so they can't be waiting for a maybe to turn into a yes forever, otherwise the club could end up with nothing like the Angus Brayshaw situation. Worst case scenario is we've probably pushed up Sydney's offer $100k a year plus an extra year.

I'm really bullish that the club can bring in McDonald and still fit in the incumbent forwards that have been spoken about. There's plenty of flexibility when considering the strengths and athletic traits of each of of McDonald, Treacy, Jackson and Amiss.

The forward set up would be something like McDonald and Treacy at CHF where they have the license to roam up the ground, link up play and use their aerobic capacity. Amiss would be the dedicated FF and Jackson would primarily be a goal-kicking midfielder. Being the unicorn that he is, Jackson would also chop out Darcy in the ruck when needed and would also move forward for short bursts when one of the three forwards is resting on the bench.

Provided McDonald commits to Freo, Darcy gets a good run at it (no injuries), and there is adequate time to embed this structure, I can't think of any other club that structures up similarly to this, or any defence that could contain this amount of firepower once these guys all peak at the same time. Not only that, but we're unlocking a 200cm bloke to join our midfield rotation. Once Johnson and Erasmus (hopefully) finish their physical development and become bonafide mids after Fyfe retires, we would out-size every other midfield around the competition.

I don't think we'd be sacrificing a huge amount of forward pressure either as Treacy's tackling is exceptional for a KPF. I'd just hope that we invest enough draft capital in bringing in another 1 or 2 small forwards in case Delean ends up a bust. Walters will leave a huge hole when he retires.

It's very exciting and in my humble opinion, it's a list with enough of a point of difference to win a Premiership. Fingers crossed we can get Macca across the line. 🤞🤞🤞

Love it! I'll make a guess and a prediction.

My guess is that when Freo formally pitched to Jackson to bring him home, this is the role that they sold to him in that meeting - the goal kicking mid who can pinch hit in the ruck.

My prediction is that if we ever see him play this role for a full season, he will win the Brownlow medal. No doubt about it.

He's like Fyfe in that sense, he's majestic when he moves around the ground and takes marks. He's a joy to watch. The umpires won't be able to resist giving him votes week in and week out.
