I'd play Baker in defense if we had him. He's never been prolific up front but is clean and a good decision maker. Would help our transition game and adds another mid rotation.
Who in our b22 would he replace in defence?

Pretty much everyone bar Pearce, Cox, Ryan and Clark.

So we should chase a 5th rated defender? Plus there are guys like Chapman, Hughes, Walker, Worner that can play roles that Baker can't due to their physical attributes. There's really only 1 person in defence that Baker can replace, and that is Aish. But Aish is a lot taller and has a similar output anyway (both right around the 20 touches mark for the last several years). Also Wagner, but he wouldn't even be in our best 22.

Don't see much point for the midfield either. He might offer a small upgrade on JOM or Switta (debatable), but it's not worth it for the cost in picks and dollars. Fyfe needs to be replaced with a big body, not a midget.

Really hope he does what is best for him and take the big dollars at WC and set himself up for life after footy. He's had success, doesn't need to prove anything and should chase the money now.

what would we do if Baker puts his hand up (like Schultz) nominated Collingwood and says he wants to come to Freo?
He wouldn't say that unless we have expressed interest in him. We shouldn't express interest in him for the reasons Alfonz has expressed. Honestly I think it's clear as day that getting Baker is the wrong move for our list.

I reckon the club would settle for giving up our worst first rounder.
It will probably be a pick in the late teens. (after father/son, academies).

Salary wise he probably would want around 400-500 per year.

Serious question: Have you watched Baker play? He's not just a defender. He's a utility, and a pretty good one.
As a back, he would get a game before Wagner, Hughes, Worner, Aish and probably Walker.
As a mid, he would get a game before Erasmus, O Meara, Brodie.
As a wing, he would get a game before Sharp and Noddy.
As a forward, he would get a game before Banfield, Sturt, Emmett and probably Switta.

We tend to overrate our own on here and underrate opposition players. Baker is a bloody good player, regardless of size.

question is what's more important to him. He's a Subi boy so probably originally a WC supporter. He's already won 2 cups so is a possible third more important than more money and less games with little to no expectations or much media scrutiny during the remainder of his career? Putting myself in his shoes, I would go for the big fat paycheck and enter semi-retirement at WC.

Nah no way, have you played much footy? Cause if you are a passionate football player, previous success doesn't mean your not desperate for more success.

There is a chance that he would just want the pay check now, but I think its too simple to say that he's won a couple of flags so he would be happy to get paid more to get flogged for the rest of his career.

From the tigers board, he is one of the best trainers at the club and shows great leadership. Those types of people are motivated by success and trying to be better.

But at full strength those guys are depth. And if he is only as good as Aish then we may as well stick with Aish
I think if we had him, our best 7 is going to be
Ryan Pearce Baker
Clark Cox Chapman
Aish

Thing about Baker that we havent mentioned as well is that he's grown and developed in the best rebounding system in the AFL. Would help a lot.

The question isnt whether he would be best 22 - he is, the question is whether the cost is worth it - I doubt it

Hope you don’t mind me weighing in.

I think people here are misunderstanding what Baker is. He’s a nuggety hard at it utility who can play anywhere on the field and have an impact.

Baker is the joker in the deck because you can put him anywhere and he’ll put the rest of your team on his back and carry them with him.

He’s not leaving Richmond for 400-500k, after being underpaid as a role player for a number of years. He’d be on 600K now O reckon and he’s probably looking for a decent pay packet to tide him over.

That’s precisely why he’s better suited to WC, at over $600k per year for 4-5 years, we can’t afford him whereas you guys probably can with Gaff and a couple of others coming to the end soon.

Yes, I have watched him play. A lot. Richmond has been in prime time for a long time. Yes, he is a good little player. Yes, he is better at football than all/most of those players. Much better in many cases. I'm not overrating our players.

But a team and salary cap needs the right balance. You can't just disregard his size. Nor the cost to get him. He needs to be a very significant upgrade on the smallish players we have, which means game changing abilities. Gulden or Bolton on $1 million = Yes. Baker on $600k = No.

Probably agree with this. Freo were keen when he was last out of contract in 2022, not sure if Freo’s circumstances have changed in last 2 years.

Doubt he’s looking to move to be a bit part fringe 22 player.

There’s no doubt we would have the interest and cap space.

I would prefer to have someone who is better in most of those individual areas rather than an very adequate one in all positions. We need goal kicking forwards and classy hbf/ outside players. Spend the draft and salary capital on that imo.

Then there’s also the possible compensation should players like Liam Baker (trade) or Jack Graham (free agent) look for another home.

WA product Baker has interest from both West Coast and Fremantle. While the Eagles, like Richmond, are expected to attack the draft considering their list position, the Dockers are expected to be busy at the trade table considering they’re loaded with three first-rounders. They’ve also been linked to Swans key forward Logan McDonald – another WA native.

He's better than Wagner/Worner and at least as good as Aish.
  • Worner is not b22 so Baker is not replacing him.
  • Wagner is a defensive rebounder and is comfortably the best 7th defender. Baker can't replace him because he doesn't have Wagner's speed.
  • Why would you pay to replace Aish when they are literally the same player?
