Not sure if this is the right thread but has anyone put their mind to who we could lose to the sign-on bonuses over at the Devils?

Feels like it's coming around quicker than I had anticipated and while Moose is the obvious main contender to go home and captain his state's inaugural side, if we managed to get Sam Taylor that would help enormously on that front.

My niggling fear is that we're going to have a tonne of players that we have invested a heap of time into so that they mature together in our window of contention, right at that maturity where they're plug-and-play enough that they'll likely be approached (think AB, Serong, Young, Clark, Cox, Ryan). The opportunity to grab 500k-1.5m just for accepting the contract would test even the most loyal soldier.
The players who would be vulnerable to loss is anyone of talent not playing in their position of choice, which nine times out of ten will be inside mids be forced onto flanks or the wing or even into the twos. It's a story as old as time (The Josh P Kennedy Cup).

I kind of feel this isn't going to be an issue for us since by time it's time to sign for the Devils all of our inside mids who didn't start on-ball on the weekend (O'Meara, Brodie, Erasmus and Johnson) will have either been doing it for 3 years (proving they've not good enough anyway), retired or actually graduated to the inside rotation and a contract befitting it.

If we jackpot on players like Simpson (Stanley!) and they are stuck down the que; they're vulnerable.

At some point a Fyfe replacement needs to be discussed as well. Is it Johnson or Erasmus? Jury still out big time on that for mine. Johnson has shown promise but he’s still a long way off even the version of Fyfe we saw last Sunday, let alone peak Fyfe.
Fyfe played a critical role as a big bull with excellent handballing skills to release the other mids last Sunday. Every one played better because Fyfe was in the side. There’s only a handful of players in the comp that can do it as well as him - Cripps, Green, Bontempelli, and right now our other options are not comparable in that role.

I very much agree with the gist of your post and all of your thoughts about other players but i'm not sure this criticism of Johnson and Erasmus is valid.

2010 Fyfe was not the same type of player. Yes he was better than both of these guys but there were other players in that team, and indeed right through to really late 2013-2015 where he really peaked as an untouchable midfielder. Plus much more opportunity - which was partially because of how good he was but also partially because he had a clear spot in the team and the centre square roatations.

Anyway. I think those guys can do it. They can clearly play AFL even if they can't be that guy.

It's at least 1/3 quicker drive to ARC from Mount Pleasant than it is to Lathlain. Baker to Freo confirmed.
Yeo was living in Salter Point until recently lol I think he is now in Applecross. Baker is also an Aquinas kid, so a lot still live around these areas (even though he was a boarder/country kid).

Logan McDonald's family are also in Salter Point (ran into him one day at the local park)

Salters Point; a beautiful part of town, (even if it feels like West Coast territory). I identify with it as my father grew up there (Howard Parade) and I spent nearly every Christmas there until my Nanna died 15 years ago. I suspect the reason you find so many footy players there now is not romance, but the fact that it's much closer to both clubs training ground than Dalkeith or Peppy Grove and 1/2 the price..

Great little spot Salter point. Underrated and unknown for a long time. I would think that Shelley would be popular as well.

As a thought - riverside does not necessarily mean river views. There are some beautiful places a road or two back from prime locations in applecross, Mt Pleasant and similar areas.

We have a river view ;)

thinking more about Baker, the last players who have wanted to "come home" since Kelly have all ended up at Freo?

I think it depends. St Lucia (where we are, along with the Yeos and a few other famous sporing identities) is the more desired part of SP. We even had Ryan Crowley in our front yard the other night lol

It worries me because they won't just get the bonus, they'll also get a disproportionate amount of salary because at least half their squad will be earning base contracts.

So they'll get $1,000,000 a year for six years with half of it in the first two years and then an extra $500k to $1m to sign as well.

We can't compete with $2m a year for two years.
Not sure Tasmania offers many good career after football opportunities. Leave to go there and you've deaded yourself to WA and all that corporate resource money

Last time he was in my front yard he was very drunk. A year into footy retirement.
the guy gets around lol it was particularly funny because my dogs are named Fyfe and Mundy, and they literally chased after him. It's moments like that when you wonder if those were great name choices lol

I swear 1 good game on the weekend from Treacy and people jump off Mcdonald. Do we not remember the Port Adelaide game with Treacy?
Yes, but McDonald has looked shit at times too so we shouldn't read much into those performances, especially still this early into both of their careers.

I don't see how Shultz is relevant. Firstly he is a genuine forward not a utility forward/back/wing. Shultz kicked almost as many goals last year as Baker has in his career. And it was a sellers market. I know he played the personal reasons card but Collingwood still had to produce overs to get him in contract.

Without actually doing research I've thought of someone. A half back flank wing utility, Pick 17 outright: Sharrod Wellingham. Sharrod was also 3 years younger and was traded at the top of his value. Although it was a while ago and probably teen picks were less valued then I think that's about the absolutely ceiling and it would likely be less than that.

They might get more in points value by trading him for multiple pick upgrades, but I can't see anyone trading say pick 14 outright for him which I think was what the Tiges fans are barely satisfied with in the Baker thread.
I dont think Baker likes playing forward which is why he is contemplating moving. He prefers half back or mid.

Could do worse than sticking him on a wing.

Really though, maybe he joins a different Vic club, it feels like it doesnt make sense for either WA team
