Brayshaw needs to make his kicking at least reasonable. Not sure if the injury he has been carrying has stopped him from practicing his kicking, but it has been worse this year than recent years. He is a good HF but needs to kick better.
I think that has a lot to do with his role change into a more attacking mid. We haven't noticed it as much in the past when he had more of a defensive role.
If Brayshaw could kick well we'd have the perfect midfield.

We basically arent playing a crumbing small forward at the moment because we dont have one outside Delean. Walters can not move well enough to crumb consistently and Emmett is basically a defensive forward costing us several goals a game. Baker will be a massive upgrade on Emmett, like, by a long long way. Then we just need an actual crumbing classy small for Walters and that forwardline is humming
At 27 years old by the start of next year, I still bulk at a mid teens pick for an upgrade on Emmett.
If Switta leaves, I’d pay whatever we get for him + Saints second for Baker, essentially we just need to beat whatever WC offer to secure his services.
keep our three 1st rounders intact.

Baker is not an upgrade on Emmett. Baker would not have busted through the Liam Jones tackle. He’s nowhere near the physical specimen of Emmett, he’s tiny.

He’s a Walters replacement. He works hard up and down the ground and can deliver the ball inside 50. Problem is, he’s no goal sneak and his kicking skills are well below Walters.

He’ll be a good addition, I think he takes Walters spot or Switkowski if we lose him. We still need our version of Rankine or Rachele to light up the forward line.

Zurhaar is a restricted free agent at the end of the season. As well as crumbing in the forward line, he could chop out and add burst speed from the centre bounces also. At 25, I like what he would bring to our mix, and he wouldn't cost us a pick as he's an rfa.

If Walters is in the team for goal kicking then he is definitely not an upgrade on Walters; the maximum goals Baker in a year is 12.

I think he could replace Emmett in the short term purely because he can go for longer, but then Emmett may increase his endurance by this point next year.

Switkowski's role is the obvious replacement (if he is going). Maybe Aish or Walker positions as well would be in his sights. Or if he replaced O'Meara giving us more endurance and flexibility?

His disposal is very good. I want him playing like Grien Miers.

We lack class kicking into the 50

Right at the end of the game there was a moment where Emmett was engaged in rough and tumble with Baker and Fyfe was having to split them up with a smile on his face, pulling Emmett back from him.

It was like everyone knows the guy having his spot threatened was asserting himself at the new dog in the pack.

Interesting
Yes I saw that smile and felt some confidence that this deal is pretty much done , but that’s just dumb nuffy think .

I’m on the same page as Lach72 , if we can get Baker playing like Miers cutting up the game between the arcs and also snagging 1or2 sausage rolls a game he would be worth every penny

I maintain that if you had a team of 18x James Aish +4 talls you would win every game in a predictable and reliable fashion, without fuss or flair. But you'd win because each moment will be moving the ball on clean. The ball would be inside fifty like a game of checkers.

Baker is similar to Aish in that he similarly isn't full of razzle dazzle but gets the job done, doesn't fumble and moves the ball on. Executes well most of the time.

Clean and composed, some might say classy, but Baker has that. A competitor who makes the most of his chances to influence the game.

He would make every team better without being the player who takes the opposition's best.

Baker would be slotting into the top half of player in the side, not into the 16 to 30th position. But I think he takes the place of a player in that group.

So we are improved.

100% agree
A true work horse with a bulldog attitude and skills to match
Must get IMO

No one is paying anything close to a 1st rd pick for Aish @ 27 yrs old

Useful player if you got him as a FA or a later pick but I don’t get why people are so desperate to trade out these high value picks

Would you trade Cooper Simpson for Baker right now ?

Simpson was pick 30 odd but people want to flick picks twice as valuable away for a bit of this bit of that veteran

I don’t get it

I get the appeal of Baker, I do. He will fill a need for us and improve the team.

But we shouldn't be spending a first rounder on him, he's OOC, not one of the competitions elite (just very good IMO) and will be 27 by Round 1 next year.

It's the type of trade a team like Geelong would get done for a 2nd rounder, we need to become ruthless at the table and get these deals done to our advantage. If he was on our list and was traded out last year, i can guarantee we would've got a 2nd rounder for him.

I wouldn't swap him now. But let's compare apples with apples.

I think any reasonable person would take the known quantity in Baker over the as yet unknown option at a pick in the 20s for season 2025.

If we had a choice between Cooper Simpson or Baker prior to preseason starting we would take Baker.

And we don't have to compare those two players, if we trade Collingwood's pick for Baker we get Baker and Simpson for Schultz and are a better squad for it.

We aren't talking about trading a first round pick as if it's a top ten selection. It will be a pick closer to the one we took Nathan Fyfe with.

I'm glad people are starting to speak up about only paying a 2nd for Baker, I was starting to get concerned maybe he is going to cost something like pick 10 because there wasnt enough Freo supporters on the low end - and the price is always between optimistic and negative fans of each side. AFL players are very good up until like 32 these days, it's not 30 and off a cliff so we'd get 5-6 years of Baker at his best. That's 100+ games I'll pay a late first for and be ok with it

I would, I think he'd look fantastic basically playing as a medium forward for us

He looked like he'd checked out yesterday, terrible body language and application.

Have no idea as to his contract status and potential trade price but if him and Dimma aren't getting along, there may be a slim chance he's open to a move?
I hope we've at least asked the question though I assume we are no chance of getting in ahead of the SA clubs even though I think he fits us better

I don't have the exact data but I think South Australian football players are the most likely to extend their career away from their home state if they move, followed by Western Australians.

Lukosius is contracted until end of 2026 so they will hold all the power there, unless they want a contracted player too.
