If they rated Serong higher than Green it would be one hell of a stuff up to bid on Green, have it not matched, and miss out on Serong all to pay less for Henry of all players.
This is also notionally true, but given GWS had their next pick at 40 the probability was 0.

Maybe controversial but I think Green may be the better player. He is an absolute beast and would have fixed all of our contested issue problems. Although saying that I do love Serong and think he should be our captain.
I don't think it's controversial, just wrong.

I mean maybe he would ultimately fix our 'problems' but Serong at this poiint actually has a higher clearance win rate and contested possession ratio than Green.

Green and Henry for Serong, arguably Serong might still be signed for the Siberian NeverGoingHomers and both Henry and Green could be playing somewhere else already.

It's more of a thought exercise anyway.

Considering they matched at 10 and had points for a bid at 6, the chances of GWS not taking him were about as high as the draft being stopped.

It is easy in hindsight and the good thing is in hindsight it didn't really cost us anything. We were always taking Henry, even if he was a lot higher than we were hoping. Maybe if the bid had of been at 5 or 6 before our two picks we would have then passed as we preferred Young and Serong and it was going to cost us too much by then.

And it validated the trade of pick #10 and our second round pick to get pick #8 ahead of Carlton for Serong.

It's just my opinion. I watch a lot of the Giants' games so I know what he's capable of. He is the player we wish Brodie was. The league sleeps on Green and he is only 22. When he hits his prime watch out.

Nobody is sleeping on him, he gets raved about everywhere.

Green will be close to the best player from that draft.

I guess the real question is whether we still get Young and Serong if we don’t trade up. If the answer is yes, I reckon that pick 25-odd we traded before the draft to move up would’ve probably been preferable to having Henry on our list. By moving up we essentially said ‘we’re matching anything - go ahead and place a ridiculous bid and we’ll match anyway’.

He might be, but I still find it crazy how people continue to find complaints about this draft. We have three top 5*ish players from that draft in Jackson, Serong, and Young.

Literally no one is complaining about our draft haul though. We are just acknowledging Taylor's point that bidding on Green was a risk which in hindsight would have been a good gamble to take.

Going to difficult someone convincing me that it would be a risk bidding on Green at 8 and GWS not selecting him. They came out before the draft and were expecting a bid anywhere between 4 and 10. Hence they traded up to pick 4. They were always selecting him and whether he was bid at 8 or 10 would have made no difference.

IIRC we publicly said we'd match a bid. I think (well, hope...) we've learnt the lessons about keeping our cards to our chest in the future.

Part of the reason we traded up was to get ahead of the blues, so we would not have got them

They even traded down after their targets were gone

Everyone knows you're matching a bid when you trade down to lower picks

We don't have to play games with it, it happens every year, every club knew that dogs, hawks, gc were all going to match theirs this year

Our real mistake was only lining up our f2 for a couple dogshit picks, no idea how we had a month and didn't find anything better than that

I’m on of the the biggest Serong fans around but I’d argue most AFL fans not from freo would have Green as marginally the better player at this point.
They are both guns but jeez Green was scary good in the finals series this year.

Rewatch Serong's finals series last year

Both tremendous talents

I think Green is bigger but they are fairly comparable. If Serong was the size of Green he would be the best player in the competition and will push to be that anyway before his time at Freo is done.

Unfortunately we don't get to look four years into the future when picking a player, otherwise we would not have traded up to get on the other side of Carlton - assuming they still wanted to stiff us and bid on Henry, we let them have him, take Serong at #11 and then Chad Warner with our second round pick.

Tom Green is one generation removed from being Richmond royalty. He will always have a bigger profile than Serong.

Only one of those players is an All Australian.

Don't think the blues are passing up on one of young or serong tbh

We got ahead of them for multiple reasons, not just the Henry bid

Edit: just check twomeys predraft, he has the 3 that blues are interested in as being serong, young and stephens (plus kemp who they did get later)
