Preview 2024 National Draft Preview Thread Part Deux

GOAD a future player. Always at least a 3 year investment. Though I would hope to see some footy sense this year

There seems to be a sense of “I’m bored of this toy, get me a new one” 5 minutes after a kid is drafted. The new batch is always so much more enticing. It’ll be the same next year. “OMG, we could have had Herman Pernorkel at pick 32….he’s gonna be a gun…..”

Please NMFC do not waste pick 2 on Tauru.

We need best available and there's no way he will be that at pick 2.

I prefer Smith, by miles, but I'll be happy with Langford, Lalor or Draper. Or O'Sullivan, even.

I damn well hope the club are not dumb enough to fall for the Tauru media hype. He looks a great prospect, but NOT AT PICK 2.

PLEASE.
Ha ha ha, calm down ansonholt, recruiters watch these boys for years and do so much study on them its not funny, our first pick, we will get the player we want and have identified him a long way out, some of us just need to chill out. 🥶

Couldn't have said it better myself. :thumbsu:

There’s some weird notion that our scouts will actually take any notice of media reports….. “hmmm, this fellow seems interesting, I just read about him online. Let’s draft him with pick 2…”

100%, The media can be a powerful tool in todays world but don't believe everything you read or hear. But some people like seriously can't help themselves, its like they are in a strange way hoping we do something that they don't want us to do and then go off their nutter and say they are finished with the club/we have no direction/this is why we'll never rise off the bottom and this is our list manager's fault, getting Caleb for our early 2nd rounder was the downward spiral they saw coming from a long way out. This is the most talent I've seen at Arden street since the early 90s and after this draft is done there will be no excuses. I feel sometimes we are like a baron Hospital, because we have no patience/patients!

Until now third rounders are normally the picks used to match bids, next year with the point changes, it is likely to be second rounders. So while we'd be less able to bundle a few thirds up for a team looking for points, those third round picks will move up the order more as second round picks get used. While Pick 18 may get pushed back to 23, Pick 40 could move up to 33 or so, depending on how academy players go early. They could be more useful than they at first look.
Well we'll have to wait and see what the bid match rules are. If it's match a bid in a round with a pick in the same round then I can't see us moving up to 2nd rounders with multiple 3rd rounders, unless some academy or F/S team has a lot of players beyond 40 they need to match. Sure they'll come in more, but if the draft ain't that deep they are worth little.

When I mentioned Langfords interview processes yesterday I was kind of inferring it was us.
Think he's been making it clear he's a rabid Tigers fan, presumably to try and get to six
Yep heard him on Dwayne's World the other day, didn't even mention us talking to him, so either he's not thinking we take him at 2 (quite likely imo) or he's hoping we don't. Also said "I"m a big Tigers fan, loved playing for the VFL team with players he idolised", so no doubt he's hoping he gets to pick 6 with Tigers, but Dees might pounce on him at 5.

Evasiveness: deft sidesteps and work through traffic is done with ease

Spacial awareness (footysmarts): knows where players are and how to get the footy to them.
He’s not quick enough for the u/18 stuff to translate into AFL, to be able to pull those moves off, he needs LDU type explosiveness.. I dont see it. He looks good against the young fellas and the testing numbers is a concern.

St.Kilda trade 10 & f2 to Nth Melb for f1 & f3

10 Nth Melb - Tauru

Get it done Eugene!
No chance. Firstly, St Kilda are looking to split that pick for extra picks in this draft not fewer. Secondly, the going rate for trading into this draft is a F1 + F2 - which is presumably why is are asking for an F2 from Adelaide for the pick slide, it would allow us to try and trade back in for a tall. Let's just hope we aren't dumb enough to do it.

I'm assuming the matching rules will be the same and just the point value changed. I don't see how attaching a round requirement to it is going to work, but we shall see.

TBF..

Herman Pernorkel can play a bit.

I’m hearing the next Dusty/Petracca/Biggie/Liam Anthony/Spider Everitt type..

I don’t know if speed is a defining difference between the two levels of the game.

I would say it’s more intense and much more work is placed by coaches on the defensive side of the game. As a result, quick reflexes and wits become really important, especially at the coal face.

I dont see superstar. He’d be a tier below an LDU type. The explosiveness isn’t there. Has some good skills, quick decision making, I think what you see at junior level wont be what you see at afl level.

When you look at past top tier mids and they all transferred their assets in junior footy seamlessly to AFL, ya kerches, Reids, Dsicos, Wardlaw Sheeze, etc..

Langford missing that explosive first 3 steps will push him down a rung because I think it’ll be very difficult for him to pull off that contested work as easily in the big league. He will definitely be a handy player though, not sure he’s a top 6 talent.

If we are going another mid, we should be trying to diversify our talents in the midfield.

We have 3 of the most explosive mids in the comp (Kerch, LDU, Wardlaw).

We need versatility and size.

Any opportunity to bring in smarts and skills should be a focus as well.

Langford ticks these boxes.

If you want an outside mid, you’d be silly to not have Jagga in the gun.

I would argue what slow (not medium or 1 paced) mid works in AFL currently?
He makes Ziebell at the end of his career look fast and Ziebell as a mid became a defensive liability

If off the Langford wagon, very strong rumours he tanked his north interview on purpose.
He certainly doesn’t look slow in videos of him, but his testing wasn’t great. But the ball moves quickly when he has it I reckon. His kicking is sublime. Low hard and fast.
