Watched some more of Smillie

Whilst he’s not the ideal pick for us, or even an appropriate pick, he does look good. I can see the Bont comparison in that he is a smoooooth mover through traffic. Has some toe. Kicking is very good but absolutely shanks the odd one.

Knows how to hit the scoreboard.

If he’s on the hairs at our pick, a club will pay a lot to get him.

Why isn’t he ideal? We don’t have a brute midfielder. We are really small as a group.

Using premium draft capital on another centre square mid that is years off the running required to be his best.

If FOS is gone at our pick then I’d say trade it to Gold Coast for 8 and 9. Or future first for 8 and 9.

Is Sid Draper falling down the order after his Nationals?
I wouldn't have thought so, just came back from injury, some of the clearances in that last game were fantastic, in 2022 at the under 16 carnival which SA won, Sid was very good in that first game before he missed the rest of the carnival with I think it was a fractured thumb, last year as an under ager he made the all Australian team, let me put it this way , if he doesn't go in the first five selections I think the phones will be cranking up a notch whoever has the next pick, and recruiters and coaches will be getting pretty excited, but that's a "what if" scenario so we will see what happens at the end of the year.

Kako just has to be as clever as Watson, Rakine and any of the top small forward tiprats!!

Gunna be interesting how we play the draft this year and what we priortise in an even draft - best available? Who is the best available or is it the best available midfielder that suits our profile? What if we finished above Richmondand WCE. does that change things? How do we split pick 2 or 3 etc etc
Don't you just love these intriguing questions at this time of year? As for where we finish, dam it, lets get some wins and send the message that we are not just coming but when we do, it is going to be an adjustment for a lot of Kangaroo supporters and a lot of supporters from other clubs that will be filthy that we're so good and its only because of all the handouts we received, if that happened, the laughter from us on every football forum would probably crash the site.

The two biggest pointers will be A/ Where we finish and what actual pick we have. B/ The trade period, I know Alastair said we will be concentrating on the draft and we will but if we can at least nab one or two good players and what position they play will have a big baring on what we do at the draft, how many picks and so on, I still think we will trade a future 2nd rounder, it makes perfect sense for this year.

Would love an experts view on this one, but does this year seem to be growing towards one of the best years we’ve had recently for KPF’s ?…there seems to be a few that can really play:

Shanahan, Whitlock, Faull, Sims etc etc

Would love to see us be bold and trade out pick 1 and load up on a couple…coming out of the draft with Kako, Shanahan, Sims & River…wow !!!
I understand what your saying Horse35 and believe me between now and draft time at least 1/4 to 1/2 of supporters from all clubs want to trade their future first or future second and get more bites at the cherry, so to speak. Recruiters know prospects years in advance and while it is done every now and again its only done if the recruiter is satisfied it won't impact a decision that he would regret, eg: where his club might finish next year and who the top twenty players in that draft according to his whiteboard.

Now if I'm correct about the top six players next year, in our position it would be an unwise move for a lot of reasons and the negatives outweigh the positives I'm afraid, and recruiters take things like that and much more before they make an important decision regarding a future first, supporters don't care they just want their "fix", until next year comes and several players in different positions tear it up and those same supporters bemoan about not having "that pick"!

There's being bold and then there is committing draft suicide, that is why draft recruiters are so good these days, technology has certainly helped but nothing beats the eye test like watching a live game and watching the player where as on a stream or replay of the game it doesn't always show you the player your watching unless the ball is in the vicinity, little things, you know its always the little things.

Gee its risky - WCE gave up an elite player for 2 average players.

I don't think they are average.

Hewett will be good.

Ginbey has some issues, but will be better than an above average player imo. He's a physical powerhouse that will be a weapon in multiple roles in 3-4 years, despite some disposal issues. He's a slow burn the same way Cunners and Ziebell were to an extent.

No way you trade Wardlaw for them, but I also don't think FOS is Wardlaw either. It's also not to say some of those in that 6-12 range aren't better for our list than those two were either.

IT swings a lot if FOS is McCluggage rather than Wardlaw and Kako and Lalor are the next Kosi Pickett and Flanders/Day

Ginbey has huge issues - he can't find the ball. He had 10 touches on the weekend - 85% game time. Average was generous.

Eagles handed us Sheezel.

I don't think that 8 & 9 is enough for a top 2 pick. That'll be around the 11th and 14th kids in the draft.

We'd either need 3 picks in that range or a pick in the top 6 (final draft order) along with one of those picks. Or similar value with pick upgrades or players.

We were always taking Sheezel.

The Eagles handed us Wardlaw.

I get he has production issues, but so did some of the examples I gave early in their careers.

Given his size and athletic ability, he may not even be a mid long term. He's got more flexibility than a 182cm skinny mid that's only getting it 10 times a game.

You only trade back from a top 2 pick in two circumstances;

1 - You are getting big overs because some other team is in love with a top 2 player and is willing to pay a premium to get them

2 - you identify a specific player who is high on your board, but undervalued on others, so you can draft them and get a bit of extra cream by moving back.

E.g. if you have Lalor as a top tier prospect on your board but he's going to slide to 8 then move back to 8 and you essentially get extra picks for free because you're still getting a top tier guy.

So we only do that trade with GC if we're getting 8 + 9 + F1 or Lukosis or someone (maybe - our F2). Or, if we have a top tier guy who will be there at that pick 8 (Lalor? Kako?).

Gerreyn answered a couple of questions people had been asking in a confident display by the big man. He launched at contested marks all game and managed to clunk a couple of strong ones, and he dominated in his backup ruck stints against Country's secondary rucks. Overall, he continued to show the combination of size and skills that has draft watchers intrigued.

If the Bont wins the Brownlow I think the ill-informed media will jump on Josh Smillie as the number one pick, regardless of whether he's a genuine number one or not, they'll be fapping about the "Next Bont" coming through.

Could potentially work to our advantage IF we still hold pick one and IF we are looking to split it.

Great work. Geez there’s some great prospects that will be around at our 2nd pick. Tempting to split our first if could end up with a Trainor/Trevaglia and Lalor combo. Something special about Bo Allen too IMO.
I noticed you’ve missed Harrison Oliver, he seems popular with the draft watchers.

Got great skills for a big bloke.
