It’s not so much a phantom draft, but where I rank players mate. I’m sure 1-2 of the talls will be available with our 2nd round pick.

However, in my opinion we should be doing everything we can to try and get 4-5 picks inside the top 30, so that we can target at least 2 of the key forwards.

Players show you who they are.

Shanahan has kicked 4,2,5 in the vfl as a recently turned 18 year old.

16 disposals, 9 marks, 3 goals against Vic Country

2 goals against Footscray VFL for the AIS team

He averages 2.3 goals per game at Coates league level. That is reduced by the fact he’s played key back some weeks. Dursma averaged 2.8.

Why aren’t we taking him with pick 4?

I really think we should torpedo both GC and Brisbane as much as possible:

Pick 2: Ashcroft bid
Pick 3: Lombard bid
Pick 4: ????

100%

Not only for that reason, but also because in an even draft, it’s more appealing to take a punt at 4 rather than 2.

Aaron Cadman came from the clouds to go pick 1. How can Shanahan be “too early” at 4 when he’s averaging more goals against men (3.25 across 4 games) than Cadman did against kids (2.8)?

Problem we have is every other club will be thinking the same How do we go about it with out either splitting our 1st which i cant see anyone wanting to do that for our 1st or our future 1st.

Watched the clips of him when he kicked 4. Three of the marks were uncontested. He won't get that in the AFL.

Height for a key forward?

Athleticism looks ok.

Jobe Shanahan 194cm 87kg
Vertical 88cm
20m 3.117
Agility 8.751
Yo-yo 720

Compared to:

Luke Trainor 194cm 90kg
Vertical 88cm
20m 3.184
Agility 8.832
Yo-yo 760

Harry Armstrong 195cm 84kg
Vertical 87cm
20m 3.123
Agility 8.774
Yo-yo 960

Jack Whitlock 200cm 87kg
Vertical 93cm
20m 3.023
Agility 8.718
Yo-yo 840

Thomas Sims 199cm (90kg)
Vertical 93cm
20m 3.036
Agility 7.909
Yo-yo 560

He’s taller than 194 cm now.

His athletic testing shades Armstrong in all categories other than yoyo which is very impressive from Armstrong.

But my overall point is, he’s performing at a level right now that you’d be over the moon with next year at vfl level.

Kids that come on quickly and suddenly in their draft year almost always turn into good afl players at the least.

We have pick 2.

We take the best key forward in the draft, or we hope a lesser prospect is available at pick 25 or whatever it is.

It’s a no brainer for me.

If you're going off athletic testing then Jack Whitlock is the better and has a higher reach that will be tough to stop.
Not opposed to any of Armstrong, J Whitlock, Gerreyn or Shanahan. Getting two of them would be unreal.

Sims has the best agility score in that list.

Yeah to me simms looks like a genuine full forward, just with a currently poor kick for goal. He’s very quick, very agile, can read the ball better than most and has the best hands in the draft.

I’d be happy with Shanahan at pick 2 (4) (pending draft camp testing) and Simms at our second.

Particularly if FOS goes pick 1

Good to hear. The draft combine scores tell you a bit about what they can do in perfect conditions but things like speed, agility, vertical leap won't show themselves if the attack on the ball isn't strong. If he's got good hands that's a good sign.

My updated rankings for anyone that is interested.

Few changes from previous rankings with Ashcroft pushes to number 1 off the back of his incredible fortnight. FOS slipping behind both Ashcroft and Draper. Shanahan pushing into the top 20.

Kayle Gerreyn & Jack Ough being my bolters. Have Gerreyn pushing that top 15 mark while Ough pushes into the top 30.

I suspect we take FOS or Draper at 2 but wouldn't be mad if we slid back to Saints pick 6 and 25 or Freo's pick 9 and 10 if we wanted two of Arm, JWhit or Shana. Other teams will be wanting those mids in the top 5 so you leverage that.
