the bitching and moaning is incredible
this trade and draft period we got:
senior experience in the fwd, mid and back + top 20 from 2 years ago fp

in the draft we got 2nd best pick (some rated #1) elite disposal user (akin to Sheez) who can be used off wing, hb, hf (and eventually perhaps be a mid)

we then get a rated KPF/D swingman - which we were all screaming out for. Yes Future first is a big price but we get their F2nd back (most likely first pick on night 2).
Remember where Larkey went.
Remember the fwd line West Coast, Cats, Doggies, Pies, tiges (17) had.

All on board for a return to 1993.

Why didn’t we just trade the F1 during trade week?

Carlton traded their future first to Hawthorn for Pick 14 and our F1 has shitloads more value than Carlton’s.

If you were going to piss away the F1 you probably could have done a deal with Essendon for Pick 9.
Yeah but what's the point of we take Matt anyways and get no (rich) f2.

I'm sure they all contributed to this ****-up.

I don't blame Brady for last year's crap game plan - I blame Clarko.
But I don't blame Clarko for crap list management decisions because he is not the list manager.

How can you say that, when every component of that trade is a complete unknown until the career of Matt Whitlock starts to play out next year and beyond and then the 2025 draft order is known at the end of the trade period next year?

Think we need to separate the 'trade' from our player rankings.

Ultimately we obviously rated MWhitlock really really highly and we obviously have little regard for next years draft.

For instance, if we had traded our F1 for Pick 10 to the Saints, and picked up Whitlock - would the melts have been so high if we rated MW in the top 10? Maybe and some might have called it a stretch, but a lot of clubs were reaching for KP players; up until recently Tauru wasn't even a top 20 pick in most people's eyes. Looks like he's got a great athletic profile, flexibility through F/D, great height, and seems like a good character.

In this way, we've got a guy we rate super highly, and extra year of development and what in effect is an end of first round pick, assuming the Tigers are last.

We also absolutely need a KP player. After drafting FOS, and the players we've brought in, we really just need a KPF (or someone to release CC to the forward line). Whitlock could be that guy. Let's back him in.
Posters wanted experience, a small forward, an outside mid, a tall forward and they got it.

As you pointed out, we paid a premium to get an extra year of development in. A swingman who gives us options with Comben down the track.

Taken some time to breathe, was devastated when I saw R1 (25) on the screen so late into tonight.

I think for so many years all we have had to hang our hats on has been draft pick numbers we have detached from on field list management.

Clearly we are in the mindset of this list build is done and its time to stop looking at draft numbers and start focussing on team and winning.

In the end a pick next year is still just a pretty number rewarding failure. Im tired of that being the thing we value.

There is no saviour coming with some future low pick, we have the pieces, now we need to put them together!

I think its important that we not conflate the criticism of the trade with the picking of the player, because pretty sure no ones really been doing that.

It's possible to absolutely hate the trade, but be rapt with the picking up of Matt. Not mutually exclusive ideas.
Till he starts playing and then the smartass remarks will come

So tigers already selecting two key forwards and a back should have been an indicator that most likely a key position player won’t be picked and there was 3 highly rated left.

Instead we decide to overpay.

We should have let the tigers select a player then negotiated for the next pick as they most likely are not taking a key position player or let them draft and trade with the next team.

However I expected this incompetence from Rawlings and co pathetic by the club and I hope it’s reviewed.

I think this is the part that shits me most.

As far as getting value for a potential top 5 pick. This is one of the worst trades that has been done since the point system was introduced.

i shudder to think what we would have done with that essendon pick if we got it tho instead of the dees

i wonder if we had armstrong or faull ahead of whitlock?

but agree we should have got so much more value out of our f1
