A mistake I think - they would do better at looking to the Pacific with PNG and NZ2
Western part of SEQ- Logan and Ipswich is a huge area of RL heartland that they take for granted. Ipswich Jets/Logan Brothers one of them or an amalgamation could step in and be an instant success just like Dolphins were. There is also a massive Polynesian population in these areas.

The big opportunity for AFL is not so much the west (which isn't to say that the Lions' presence in Springfield isn't a great long-term play) but in the south-west, in a sweeping arc from Yarrabilba through Jimboomba to Flagstone. This is a massive growth area, and it doesn't really appear to be on either the AFL or NRL's radar (as far as I can tell). This is the growth area that so many people forced "out" of Brisbane by house/rent prices are going into, and there is no one football loyalty.

impressive results for the cycling .... the 2 pyrenees stages over the weekend were compelling viewing
Always find it a bit funny that team names are effectively the manifestation of sponsors, yet that sponsorship money goes to waste in Australia, USA etc. despite good viewership. Among the French teams for example, French companies Decathlon and TotalEnergies have Australian operations and probably have some value ... but local insurance companies are meaningless to Australia. Always find it a bit strange that you don't get more sponsors with a global footprint.

Now I've been watching this issue from afar for the past year or so, because I was suspicious that the new bill had albo's hands all over it to help his lunch buddy Peter Vlandy's and the NRL to get a better broadcast deal. I remember reading all the complaints from fta networks CEO'S completely baffled as to why this loophole was being left open, it made no sense to anybody. Now I see the bill has been passed and they will reassess in 2027, conveniently once the NRL rights have been completed again, with this major advantage over it's competitor.

It is definitely paying off for the NRL having a super fan as the prime minister, especially when your chairman is good mates with him too, I'm surprised the afl media aren't onto this, if it were the other way the NRL media would be all over it.

The government has become an absolute lapdog for the NRL.

Now a deal is reportedly being done so that players for the proposed PNG team can earn tax free income.

I just saw that, I laughed when Vlandy's proposed it last year, but good old albo comes to the party to fund his favourite sport yet again. I also read of the 600 mill, 60 mill of that will go to the Australian nrl clubs as like a licence fee. So basically Australian taxpayer dollars just going to all the nrl clubs, for nothing, just to line their pockets.

First i've of that.
Is there a link to it?

The greatest conflict of interest in Australian sport is albo's buckets of cash towards his mates in the nrl. I actually don't mind him outside of this, but it is super damaging to the afl him being in charge and v'landy's having his ear on literally everything he wants. It's pretty unfair that they're closing the gap based off taxpayer money and not popularity of the actual sport. This will flow onto cutting into afl gains in nsw and qld, we all know he already is influencing the reduction in oval playing fields in those states.

Albo hands out NRL jumpers to heads-of-state as if they are symbols of Australia.
Albo, hand out Australian (Rules) Football material and be proud of something tangibly Australian.

Putting aside the merits of sports diplomacy, rugby league has been a pretty constant, bipartisan part of relations with our Melanesian neighbours for the last few Prime Ministers:

A Queensland shirt and playing a bit in the yard or having a chat about rugby league is a little bit different to 600 million in Aussie taxpayer dollars though. The best part for mine is the 60 mill in licence fees to go to other nrl clubs 😅. If that isn't dodgey I dunno what is.

I don't see rugby league doing much of that especially for females.
I see rugby league as being very aggressive in nature and only increasing that social conflict.
Australian Football would be a much better choice though I guess soccer is more palatable.

It's weird that Albanese is promoting PNG national pride through rugby league
but at the same time trying to hang his hat on soccer for Australia.

a time will come when govt largesse is reigned in ..... what will the nrl do when that sugar hit dries up?
Lets all agree that ALL SPORTS shouldn't rely on tax payers money for new grounds or stadium upgrades.
If any sport wants a stadium upgrade that sport or sports that share that stadium should pay for it, and the same applys to new sports stadia as well.
