haha.....true just a mere 329km away..... WA is a big joint. But in all seriousness good luck hosting AFL matches at Hands Oval, Bunbury......even with the redevoplment, it has a very small capacity. Surely NM has a huge untapped supporter base in Vic? Or not?

North Melbourne have had a strong alliance with Western Australia with some of our best players playing there around the 80's era ( I still think WTF are they doing). Names that pop into my head are Glendenning, Cable, Krakeour brothers, Winston Abraham, Peter Bell, Andrew Swallow, Dean Laidley.

In reality, I would suspect that GWS would pass on this and just have the 4 ND picks, taking 2 extra rookie spots (potentially 1 DFA and 1 rookie selection). Indeed, the guy I select here could be an option for a rookie spot, but the risk would be that someone else takes a punt on him before Giants have their first selection. So, just for the fun of it, I am going to make a selection in the ND. We've lost James Peatling, who provided a defensive element to our midfield set-up, so I'm looking for someone who has a bit of a hard edged and can provide that. Probably unlikely to play in 2025, possibly won't make it as a career, but like JP is worth a punt to see how he can develop. He has a secondary arrow in his quiver, in that he can play as a defensive-minded defender, which we don't currently have in the squad, so I think he's worthy of selection as the type of role player that complements the other "stars" in the squad.

In a draft full of unique midfield prospects full of attacking flair, Lucca Grego stands out for his defensive appetite. The hard-nosed bull is clearly the Western Jets' most high-profile talent this year and has carried that expectation to improve on his deficiencies, all while remaining a highly team-oriented player.

Grego's defensive acts and physicality are among the traits which make him a leader by action. He thrives on applying pressure and laying punishing tackles, perhaps credit to his background as a rugby league junior - hailing all the way from Queensland. He rides the bumps well, too as a defender/inside midfielder.

At the coalface and when intercept marking, Grego's clean hands are highly noticeable. He adds touches of flair when running off half-back, particularly with his run-and-carry, but is primarily an honest and hard-working type. That's part of the reason why he fit so seamlessly into Vic Metro and Williamstown's backlines.

Credit to Grego, he has clearly looked to round out his game. Early in the season he struggled to drive his legs away from the contest and tended to dump kick, but adjusted nicely to be a more damaging stoppage player. That applied to his ball use from defence too, where he would normally blaze away on the run. He can still work on his finishing in front of goal, though, having kicked 7.14 for the season.
