I don’t think I’ll change to much this year, couple of years in a row I’ve just made the wrong call on the some players I was weighing up.

This year it was going macrae over Bont and Libba. I took Ridley at start of year over Daicos. Obviously Ridley came good but he started slow which hurt.

The same as Bailey Dale, usually so consistent. Started horribly this year. Maybe I held him too long but he did come good there for a while.

I had Dale, Ridley and Cumning D1-D3, took a risk didn’t pay off.

My bye structure was good but what I couldn’t account for was my premos and rookies 💩 ING the bed in rounds 14 and round 15. That’s just unlucky.

Paid up for Laird and Oliver at start of year. Didn’t work out, but might next year. You just never know.

From my club, Josh Ward will be the watch in the pre-season. Will be turning 21 and have 3 pre seasons of conditioning under his belt.

Already averaging 22 disposals a game. I expect that to climb. Has an average of 80 this season as a second year player (and still a teenager).

Will be priced awkwardly, but I genuinely won't be surprised if he explodes into a ball winning machine, rotating through the wing and midfield.

With Daniel Rich likely gone, I'll be keeping an eye on Darcy Wilmot. Similar reasoning to Ward. 3rd year in the system with a great role.

Aside from PODs, you'd have to think Touk will be very popular at a lower price.
Might break from usual tradition and start Zach Merrett as opposed to viewing him as a trade-in option.

Keep an eye out for the "Premium Midfielder Of The Future" .......likely to be 50% MID 50% FWD in 2024 ......versus 5% MID this year .....4th year
Not getting sucked in again...

Tsatas will be a lock if he doesn't debut this year...

I have a wonderful plan for next year, central to it will be taking things a bit more seriously and not doing so many lunacys-

You just need the right dosage of lunacys, but keep erring on the more side - it’s more fun that way:p

Would a 2023 Rate My Trades thread be a good idea?

Trying to work out where it's all gone wrong this season, planning for next season, has be judging my trades this season.

First bunch of corrective trades, what do you all think? 8/10? Daicos instead of Cogs in R2 would've been perfect.

Second bunch is borderline disgusting. 2/10. Mackenzie to JVR would have sufficed, saving me the nightmare of Chandler to Pickett. Saving that boost would have saved the following boost of Roberts to get Lloyd.

Not really .....you need the context behind the Trade ....and it's too hard to convey in retrospect

It's hard to say for sure, but there are a few things in here that I think you could avoid next year:

  1. Hunter, Flanders, Clark and Bruhn were all low owned, risky mid pricers. I think you should really only be starting one or two of these per season as they make for awkward picks to fix and you had to burn two boosts to get off of then. If there is a value mid-pricer everyone is getting on, it's basically free as there is safety in numbers, but outside of that, I'd just pick one or two if you want some different mid-pricers.

  2. Three trades after round one is probably a bit too reactionary, but also you needed to get Daicos, Ziebell, Chandler, Sheezel and McKenna (all were must haves really), so probably a good move! If you'd started more rookies and less mid-pricers, you probably benefit from having one or two of Chandler, Sheezel and McKenna and don't need to burn the trades.

  3. Trading out Chandler too early for money. Got to let the good rookies fatten up and cull them at their peak. Understand the appeal of Kozzie, but probably just need to be patient here and hold the trades for premos. Also, after having burned two boosts and six trades, wouldn't have used one to sideways a cash-cow effectively.

  4. Most of your trade ins were good! Probably got hurt more by the starting team in this instance as opposed to bad trading (other than the Kozzie trade). Also likely hurt by having used three boosts by round five without getting an upgrade in. 9 trades and 3 boosts to correct the team is just too many I think.

He’ll be in no man’s land price surely. He’ll be priced at an average of 80. Little cash to make and nowhere near a keeper.

Not for for over-dramatizing, but this thread may be the embodiment of everything that's wrong with society today.
If I catch any of you in here before the end of the season, there'll be hell to pay.

So I also started with Cumming and Bruhn. Things I've learnt for next year:

  • Cumming: No discernable reason he was going to improve, and was priced awkwardly as a value premo. Next year, every pick either has to have a specific reason they will improve.
  • Bruhn: I standby this pick. New team, starting on ball, and played a great practice match. We may have been one year early though.

I then traded Bruhn to JHF (missing Chandler). Theory was that there was the chance JHF was going to be a keeper. Big mistake, and in hindsight too speculative.

I burnt 5 trades before Rd 3. I would LOVE to not use any after Wk 1 this year.

I started Bruhn, and it was a terrible pick. Classic SC error, got sucked in the preseason hype, but he was (and still is) all potential. There were so many reasons not to start him, and I ignored them all. Traded him to Gulden in round 2.

Agree about not using early trades. Ideally you only want to use them round 3 for rookie corrections and then hold until round 5/6. I used 9 before making an upgrade (although 3 were injuries)

Why though?

Has the CBA role, change of clubs with spots in the midfield available. On paper seems pretty good.

Bruhn has the role now .....early season though, he had poor TOG & spent a lot of time on the HFF

The TOG is a good point and one I didn't realise. Anyway - we live we learn.

I think these speculative mid-pricers are OK in small doses, but you have to be prepared to move them on after Rd 2. (eg to Chandler which was the right move)

Harry Sheezel and George Wardlaw are seen as North Melbourne’s future and both are both leading contenders for this year’s Rising Star.

But a forgotten pick from the 2022 AFL Draft has the talent to potentially surpass the duo at Arden Street, says interim coach Brett Ratten.

Brayden George was touted as a top-10 draft pick before an untimely ACL injury and was instead plucked by the Roos with pick 26.

He only joined main training in late June but Ratten has seen enough to place big raps on the 19-year-old.

“He could be the most talented out of this year’s crop. That’s a big call because Sheezel is playing so well and Wardlaw we know is very, very talented, but Brayden has got some real strong AFL attributes,” Ratten told NMFC Media in a member

No scoring history (1 career ton)
Low TOG
Terrible price (the upside is rarely worth the risk @$300k)
I'm not sure the role was ever there either, last season Geelong rotated heavily through midfield, and there was no sign that was going to change.

Agreed, I also started Flanders which didn't work. But both players have come good, we were just half a season early on them.

As I said as above, next year I'm avoiding potential breakouts, and will trade them in if necessary.

He's definitely on the watchlist.

Remember Clarko hates rookies though.

Next years watchlist

4x Captains. Daicos, Trac, Tingles, TBD Mid with Soft Early draw
Ruck Cover: Darcy Cameron

5x value Premos
1x Harley Reid

10x 170k-330k expensive rookies with job security to be on field.
9 x123k rookies for bench.

After doing my year in review, I feel cleansed and can focus on this thread - so I'm looking to contribute soon :D

kyri I agree with WaynesWorld19 looking at your trades in isolation is really hard to judge.
e.g. you may be trading to prepare for byes or restructure your team and keeping money ITB for future trades

Only you know what context you've made those trades in, after all - you canvas so many options each week anyway - so they can't be too bad :p
