Next years watchlist

4x Captains. Daicos, Trac, Tingles, TBD Mid with Soft Early draw
Ruck Cover: Darcy Cameron

5x value Premos
1x Harley Reid

10x 170k-330k expensive rookies with job security to be on field.
9 x123k rookies for bench.
Highly doubt DC is R/F next year. He has taken the vast majority of ruck contests when playing.

It's hard to say for sure, but there are a few things in here that I think you could avoid next year:

  1. Hunter, Flanders, Clark and Bruhn were all low owned, risky mid pricers. I think you should really only be starting one or two of these per season as they make for awkward picks to fix and you had to burn two boosts to get off of then. If there is a value mid-pricer everyone is getting on, it's basically free as there is safety in numbers, but outside of that, I'd just pick one or two if you want some different mid-pricers.

  2. Three trades after round one is probably a bit too reactionary, but also you needed to get Daicos, Ziebell, Chandler, Sheezel and McKenna (all were must haves really), so probably a good move! If you'd started more rookies and less mid-pricers, you probably benefit from having one or two of Chandler, Sheezel and McKenna and don't need to burn the trades.

  3. Trading out Chandler too early for money. Got to let the good rookies fatten up and cull them at their peak. Understand the appeal of Kozzie, but probably just need to be patient here and hold the trades for premos. Also, after having burned two boosts and six trades, wouldn't have used one to sideways a cash-cow effectively.

  4. Most of your trade ins were good! Probably got hurt more by the starting team in this instance as opposed to bad trading (other than the Kozzie trade). Also likely hurt by having used three boosts by round five without getting an upgrade in. 9 trades and 3 boosts to correct the team is just too many I think.
Starting with a cookie cutter team seems to be the way to go. It is all about trading from there. Would love to see your Round 1 team.

Getting caught up in the Kosi and Chandler boosts is definitely due to my starting team as you said. If those players were guns and rookies instead, I would have at least nailed a premo and a rookie, savings two boosts and two trades.

Essentially leads back to one of my lessons learnt for 2024 of holding good rookies and avoiding risky pod midpricers.

Don't have a screenshot of my starting team, but this is what it looked like after I traded Nat Fyfe to Chandler after round one:

Some horrible picks in: Fyfe, Goater, Docherty and Steele.

My trades after round two were Darcy to English, Goater to Daicos and Steele to Ziebell (using DPP).

Still chose to trade, but it was to get the best priced players as opposed to being forced to trade two awkwardly priced players one a rookie and a compromised premo.

Who knows, MPM could work wonderfully next year, it's a tough game!

12 Premos to start with.

It will be interesting to see who pops up in the off-season. There were basically 4 locks as value premos from day 1. (Green, Rozee, Gulden, and Taranto)

It's also good that you don't need to get every pick 100% right to be #1.

As far as this season goes. I think I got everything mostly right aside from a few premo picks.

I made a last minute trade right on the siren of the start of the season swapping a D premo (or maybe midpricer) for Rozee.

Might have been Yeo (and swapped Laird to Bont for extra cash to make it happen)

I nailed Forwards and Mids (aside from Fyfe)

Had Doc, Dawson, midpricer (clarke maybe) McKenna, Wilmont, Constable, Cincotta and Chesser

Mids were Oliver, Bont, Setterfield, Hopper, Holmes, Fyfe, Calahan, Ashcroft. (forget )

Rucks: Gawn, Marshall. (loop)

Forwards: Dunkley, Taranto, Rozee, Gulden, Ziebell, Sheezel (Philapou, Davey)

Early trades were a bit of a mixed bag. Was trading too freely feeling good about where I was at and wasted trades chasing points on stepping stones. Should have been more patient. Waited for real premos.

I don't care if English costs 2 million bucks, I'm starting him.

Not having him this year has been truly painful.

Doesn't matter which club he plays at, he'll be the R1 for the next 5+ years.

Good to have a set & forget ruck back...

Yep, English killed me all year. Number one picked regardless of price.

Where's Matt Crouch gonna end up? North have enough mids. The Eagles could do with a few. Any other teams need a grunt mid?

So, in all my craziness. I have come up with The Kenties 2024 v1.0.1.

I don't think anyone really wants to see it. It's too insane to be using a ~5500 magic number with this seasons averages to come up with next years side for about 10mill or less.

DEF:
125k 125k
200k 150k
Stewart + Sicily 630k
Sheezel + Ridley 540k

MID:
125k 125k 125k

Bont 700k + Touk 550k + Steele 550k + 500k

RUC:

English 720k + Witts/Marshall/Darcy 600k

FWD:

Trac 680k + 500k + 500k

NWM might be the King of the seagulls over the next few years.

Think he's a lock next year.

Callum Mills is going to be giving me headaches all pre-season next year. Obviously going to be underpriced compared to 2021/22 output. He had a pretty defined role in those years, but this season it feels like he's had to be a Mr Fix-it, where he's played full-back at times (like in the Geelong game) and generally had to fill gaps based on how injured our list was during the year. Last night felt like a poor game in general, but will see how he finishes the year as well. Probably see where he's at during pre-season and our list health overall, I won't be dismissing him, but can't have him all over the shop in terms of role like 2023.

He's just too versatile to risk starting with Mills. Steele a better pick at the price

If he has a good preseason, you almost have to start him. If he fails, you can always downgrade him to that ~$400k mid-pricer that explodes (and pocket some cash).

I expect the Swans will strengthen their defence and/or forward line in the off season. With consistency (both fitness and role), Mills will be a bargain for the price. Rough year for him, thrown around a heap, then had a nasty injury (and was probably rushed back).

From my club, Josh Ward will be the watch in the pre-season. Will be turning 21 and have 3 pre seasons of conditioning under his belt.

Already averaging 22 disposals a game. I expect that to climb. Has an average of 80 this season as a second year player (and still a teenager).

Will be priced awkwardly, but I genuinely won't be surprised if he explodes into a ball winning machine, rotating through the wing and midfield.

With Daniel Rich likely gone, I'll be keeping an eye on Darcy Wilmot. Similar reasoning to Ward. 3rd year in the system with a great role.

Aside from PODs, you'd have to think Touk will be very popular at a lower price.
Might break from usual tradition and start Zach Merrett as opposed to viewing him as a trade-in option.
Connor Mac I’m keeping an eye on too, especially with how grim the FWDs will be. He’s primed for a breakout too.

I think that’s gonna be the key to success next year, nailing your breakout picks

Trac and Macrae F1 and F2
Take a punt at F3, maybe F4 also
Then load up on rookies
Save your cash for DEF and MID

A good F6 rookie starter as well will be Brayden George if he's named for R1 2024 for North, will be quite cheaper considering he missed this season.
Harley Reid likely to be M/F. Will be $207k, but certain to play round 1 unless injured.

First post for a while here, given its in this thread tells you how my 2023 season went lol.

Here are my initial thoughts on some starting selections.

Def:
Daicos
- Yes, another preseason into the young goat. Early captain option
Sicily - Yes, Hawks are looking to recruit a KPD in off season to free him up. Expensive but think he can do 115+.
Stewart - Maybe, prefer the two above. Has the 0 priced into him but will be 31. Will depend on value available
Sinclair - Eh, priced ok. Solid but bit of a nothing pick. Not a bad option
NWM - Maybe, seems to struggle away from Victoria or in the rain. Will be priced at 480k and I can see him doing 95+.
Sheezel - I will lock if they say he is playing down back, I think they want to utilise him forward though. Watchlist.
Ryan/Houston - No, maybe upgrade targets.
Ridley - Probs no, Think he will do 105-110 but things always go wrong with him. Will probably sit out due to durability.

Currently - Daicos, Sicily, Stewart, NWM, Sheezel

Mid
Bont -
Too expensive at 700k, think I'll pass and get him asap
Oliver - Real strange one, will consider with a full preseason and some hype articles. He wasn't at his best leading up to his hamstring.
Dunkley - Upgrade target, probably better when it gets colder.
Dawson - Yeah I dont mind, this feels a bit like Petracca last year where his kicking has killed him. He should be doing 120+ if he cleaned up a lot of his kicks.
Laird - Upgrade target, will be 30 and had a few body issues this year.
Neale - Upgrade target, will be 31 so cliff isnt far away.
Brayshaw - Locked for me, hasn't really been acknowledged but his TOG has jumped to about 85% from 79% last year since he got over his knee issue. All going well I see him 115+.
Serong - Solid option, happy to pick or upgrade later. Similar to Brayshaw TOG has shot up on last year.
Rowell - Not sure, don't really trust him but could do 120+ one year.
Anderson - No, probably loses a bit of CBAs to give time to Flanders and Humphrey
Steele - mmmmm I love me some Steele but he will probably work his way into the season. Few body issues as well. I feel a bit more comfortable picking guys on the rise than potentially on the decline, watch in preseason.
LDU - Looks like a 120+ but had a fair few injuries this year. Probably explodes but im a sucker for avoiding high scoring injury prone players.
Zerrett - Expensive but 115 and no injuries is the norm for him so I'm not opposed to it. Tags means hes probably an upgrade target.
Parish - No
Walsh
Cerra - Bit like LDU massive scoring potential but done 3 hammys in 2 years. Not cheap enough for me to go there.
Mills - Forget it, he doesn't seem overly enthused to play midfield and is injury prone. They got enough kids coming through who need ample time.

Currently - Dawson, Zerrett, Brayshaw

Rucks
English -
Yeah Think I'll just pay, him and Daicos the main captains. Gawndy worked for 4 years and we have half of that here.
Gawn - Yeah. Assuming Grundy is gone, this is an interesting one. At 32 I'd be very surprised if he could shoulder a massive load for 23 games. Wonder if he gets new support.
Grundy - This is a bit of a conundrum if traded. He'll be very cheap (490k) and showed great scoring power solo rucking. I trust him more to play every game than Gawn but he isn't half the ruck Gawn is. Watch in preseason.
Darcy - Wait and see if he's traded, they may want to use Jackson a bit here and there, plus he is very injury prone. Think I'll sit out.
Xerri - Pass, can score but meh player. Also injury prone. Think Goldstein is still better than him
TDK - Not going to be cheap enough but bit of potential here. Can always play Pitt beside him.
Rowan - Thanks for 2023 but pass, priced at max.
Briggs - Is a gun but can he match the ceiling of Gawn/Darcy? Not sure. Pass but will watch.
Bryan - The dons have something here, unfortunately they probably play two rucks. Think he will surpass Draper in 1-3 years. Might be fwd status.

Currently - English, Gawn.

Fwd
Petracca -
I'm not paying 650k for him but Jesus Christ he's been the worst non own bar English. Has not dropped in price for 3 months. Ironic because he fell to Steele price territory last year.
Macrae - Wait and see but hard to start with the leader of Supercoach ISIS at the helm
B.Smith - Again his coach is a supercoach terrorist who prefers to play Caleb Daniel over 3x AA and young superstar in the midfield. Has had a few body issues. Would need to be made very clear in preseason he will play at CBAs, is reportly unhappy playing outside centre bounces.
Flanders - Yes, new coach is hopefully not brain damaged enough to play him in the 2s or out of position. Although this interim coach put Swallow back in the midfield. Has a massive work rate and snout.
Himmelberg - Not at GWS with Whitfield/Ash together back there. Was a gun last year but playing like a potato this year.
Sheldrick - Yes, did 90 odd when given a mid time (4 games) with terrible tog and 40% CBAs. 300k is a terrible price but there is keeper potential with a big preseason
Windhager - No but watchlist. 3rd guy behind Sinclair and NWM means he wont score enough down back to justify 300k.
Lynch - Will be 240-280k likely 280k. Not sure here, 31 and injury prone but there is definitely 100-150k in him, potentially more.

Currently - Flanders, Sheldrick, whoever role changes in preseason.
