Team V Essendon named.

Zero surprises here for mine.

Edit* Ollie Henry not named due to rolled ankle (precautionary).

FB: MOC SDK Kolo
HB : Henry Stewart Bews
C: Blitz Holmes Duncan
HF: Close Stengle Jez
FF: Hawk Miers Neale
Foll: Stanley Danger Atkins
Bench: Zuthrie Bruhn Clark Mullin Touhy Dempsey Mannagh Bowes

Emg: Conway Knevitt COS Parf

Clearly wanting to take a look at Neale, Mannagh and Dempsey.

Bews names on ground, Mullin on bench.

Conway to do his thing in VFL until fully ready or needed.

Parf is a fringe of the fringe player.

Backing Touhy in.

Knevitt was ordinary v the blues and didn’t make the cut.

Lawson not named as an EMG.

It all makes sense to me… we are going full strength and with a couple of spots ups for grabs I can’t wait to see Mannagh, Dempsey and Neale going hard to win a R1 position.
Agree. No real surprises other than bench more extended than I thought.

But I understand that 3 of those 8 will be held back for either an injury or to replace people late in the third qtr. (so we are going to be rotating 5 not 8 which makes sense)

We might get therefore another inkling into peacking order when we see those 3. My guess (don’t know) is that it will be Osin mannagh and Clark

Certainly as you say dempsey and Neale will want to play well again and mannagh will be out to impress. Only 1 will make it to round 1

I am a bit surprised bews came back in unless he was coming back from injury last week?

Other than that we need to lose 4 players from this squad for round 1. Interesting.

Got our answer on number 1 ruck and feel for knevitt who will need to work hard again in vfl

Ahhh thanks CHAWKTS.

Ok well if we are only rotating 5 off that bench then we are still none the wiser lol.

If Mannagh is not in the rotation of 5 and is sitting until the last to possibly come on then that’ll signal he isn’t likely to be in R1, especially after Dempsey started over him v Carlton.

Neale named on the ground… Is that a sign or can the players named on the ground actually start on the bench or is that locked in?

What’s with the forward line set up 😂
Stengle and Miers holding down the kpp spots clear out lads 😂

He's like 5 games in, nearly all of them as a ruck. Still a development year given he's what 21 and 203cm?
As in, he needs to fight hard to win his spot in best 23, he isn't going to be handed anything

Club believes in him, we believe in him...it's time he puts a stamp on his spot so Hawk can rest during the year.

Cam Guthrie was “precautionary” too, you never know with the cats, could be fine, could never play again

I would think Neale was clunking marks well enough to get another look at AFL level backmen. But I would think he’s first out when O Henry comes back in, which he will. And Rohan is in the mix when he’s good to go.

It's crazy how deep our forward line looks now

I don’t know the answer to that. Other than i suspect Neale is a more likely replacement for O Henry that Dempsey so he has just filled in that spot. Dempsey is a rotation for the forwards. I feel a bit nervous for some reason for both of them as I want them to have a good game and push for that open spot. Someone (along with a handful of others) is going to be disappointed

Knevitt is unlucky but clark is a necessity to try another PS game with guthrie out and mannagh and dempsey impressing.
I would say for round 1 bews mullin and neale will drop out and dempsey and mannagh are battling for the last spot (unless they leave tuohy out and pick both which i would). The other option is clark out but i think he will be in.

Conway will play soonish but i think parf is well and truly fringe.

I think you are spot on. Of course if Neale clunks them and kicks 4 then he leapfrogs…

Why do people still care about if someone is named starting on the ground or not out of interest? Especially in a practice match it means nothing, and with rotations these days they are on and off the ground constantly...

Most clubs have been leaving 3-4 players on the bench until well into the second half. If we do the same it's probably fair to assume the ones left one the bench until later aren't likely to play round 1. And those named on the ground probably won't be the ones left on the bench.

yeah but tonights isn't a stupidly massive squad is it? I thought there was just a couple extra? Someone could start and not play the 2nd half, someone could play the whole game and not play round 1 depending on form, the look of the team etc etc.. i just think some people read a little too much into it I guess

It's a fair assumption that the players that only play the 2nd 1/2 or last 1/4 are probably on the outer.

Normally it wouldn’t matter.

But there is 8 on the bench tonight and CHAWKTS has mentioned that we are likely rotating 5 on the ground initially and leaving the other 3 as replacements for injuries or to come on late.

It possibly can show a little bit of the pecking order and at this point of the year we are just looking to talk about anything to fill in time.

I did mention it because I’m interested to know if Neale will start on the ground and potentially play a full game… if he starts on the bench and is one of the 3 players just biding their time to come on the ground, it shows the we are probably less likely to select him in R1 and we will probably only see 20 mins of him rather than a full game.

It can seem like a little thing… but in this occasion it gives us a bit more of an indication of where Neale is at in the pecking order.

It’s just a fringe player thing.

There’s still spots up for grabs and we (me that is… probably some others) are looking for anything to gain info to make a judgement on who we think the club thinks is B22/23
