Training 2024 Pre-Season

If comparing our first 7 games this season with 23 which would you prefer

I'd prefer this year.
Last year was a cushy run, and as soon as we played Collingwood we were stuffed for the rest of the season.

Last year we lost to:
Carlton, Hawks, Gold Coast ( once of 2 games ) , Melbourne , Lions ( twice ), Richmond ( 1 of 2 ), Crows, Port, Collingwood.
So if the teams we are playing first 7 rounds are "scary" and we add the ones who beat us last seasons, then a total of 13 teams are scary.
That leaves only 4 teams that won't leave us with sweaty palms.

We have to play someone .

One word comes to mind.....awesome !!!!!!!

Aside from a minor foot issue prior to Xmas.....he's been in great nick.

That pesky Covid did get him a few weeks back.

Training extremely well.

Obviously,he is one player that we just cannot afford to lose during the season.
Roh
Steele
Wilks
Membrey
Crouch
Jones
Ross
Stocker
Battle
Players who were seniors all last season don't get much of a mention in training reports.
I have not seen one where I would say has tapered off from last season.
Maybe Crouch because of restricted training.
Included Jones as he has been with us 5 years now. Has looked as good as I have ever seen him at training.

Owens - Kouta

Collard - Charlie Cameron

Hotton - Montagna
Keeler - Liam Jones
Hastie - Jack Steven
Shoenmakers - Steven May
Actually this is very interesting & not sure how it came about, but Veer Right has gone completely Left Field 🥴

I reckon TC could have been more than just a backup ruck if he were playing elsewhere.

Just a hunch but he's been unbelievable for Sandy

If Ro went down it would be a huge blow but TC wouldn't look out of place in the big league if you ask me.

Wasn't too keen on Lyccett for backup because TC is in my opinion probably just as good as him at this stage of their careers.

As per the discussion , he will not "play the kids at all costs".

Why do you think we won't make finals? Who is going past us? Why?
The goal is to be able to achieve sustained contention at the top end of the ladder which overlaps Tasmania’s entry.

Maybe we win a flag before that (I doubt it)

But everything is being geared towards a few years time.

The one thing I’m not sure of and from what is mentioned to me. The club don’t know if Ross is done after year 4 and an assistant moves up or if we will extend him. (Might be way to early to even consider the possibilities but Ross himself liked the succession idea)

My comment had nothing to do with the quality of other sides but the understanding that if the club fulfils its goal of pumping more games into youth - a successful season could very well translate into the exact same outcome as last year.

With a lot more youth getting exposure and setting ourselves up for better success in the future.

As it stands I think what we have is unlikely to win us a flag - unless we have 3-4 superstars announce themselves this year.
Every year the youth gets more exposure, our best players are getting older.

In 3 years time Ross, Webster, Hill, Wood, Crouch, Membrey, Sinclair, Jones, Marshall, Steele, Wilkie and Howard are all 31 or above.

ATM the list is capable of a Top 4 finish and that should be the aim.

Aside from King, I don't think we need to find that many "superstars" to be in genuine contention.

If King does become the player we think he's capable of becoming, then having 2 or 3 of the other youngsters become serious AFL players would be enough to put us right in the hunt over the next two years.

So the likes of Clark, Owens, Windhager, Phillipou, NWM, Sharman, Dow and Henry are the ones to be watching closely.

Do they chug along now looking to the future or do they make the step up.

The core isn’t Sinclair Marshall Steele Membrey crouch etc.

They are building around the group led by King. So, Owens windy NAS Pou Caminiti Wilson Sharman Henry etc

Battle was one of the best in yesterday’s match sim…has not missed a session and is looking strong and in complete control of his game.
Gun
Have always thought so
Him and wilkie you'd follow into battle, pardon the pun

Was completely played out of position on the wing ffs

Our midfield has been our problem , Steele and Crouch do the job but they need something more and Seb has had his day - for us to make the next step Owens , Windhager and Phillipou need to produce , of course Seb , Dow and co hopefully will give support when needed.

Or Dow or Henry.

I don't care who we play. I just want a healthy list to start the season. Last year's start was diabolical. That's a significant part of the reason why our start to the season wasn't as cushy as you suggest.
The context was you disagreeing about my statement re an easy draw in 2023 so if we are debating that point on its own, I think it's universally accepted last years draw was more favourable than this years especially the early parts of each season.
