Training 2024 Pre-Season

I haven’t been able to get anything done since George announced the minting of badges, firstly I didn’t realise he had such wide ranging powers, respect, and secondly I’m now obsessed with being awarded a badge.
See, I 'm in this camp, very distracted by the whole ferfuffle. But that maybe because I misread what was going in - I thought I was potentially going to be awarded a "vadge".

I had already planned some alone time.......:'(

Dow could be a huge addition. He's got real pace out of the middle and was a high pick for a reason. There is plenty of growth there but you can't plan around extraordinary potential growth. King, Owens etc look blue chip and earmarked for being above average. Guys like Clark would have to have a massive jump in output. It can happen and you should keep an open mind but need to plan to be a force for a sustained period and keep striving.

I left Dow out.
We lost Gresham who had less clearances from more games comparing 23 to 22. I'm hoping that Dow will more than make up for that loss, but until he plays we really don't know.
Yeah Clark is a bit of a maybe.

Hell!!
I’ve always maintained I’d need a heck of a lot of alone time if I owned one.

It would get a fair run on the weekends too.

Please can we stick to what the site is about

It will be a readjustment, replace Gresham and Ross with Henry and Dow/Jones and hopefully pick up some clearance and speed from it.

If Gresham's role in the transition chain is replaced by Matteas (which seems to be on the card from training reports) then we are going to get a lot more threatening looks at goal.

Any of the ITKs able to confirm if Hunter's facial injury is just superficial and no impact to his pre season ? From track watchers he seemed to be well set for starting mid position. cheers

No news from the club would indicate he’s all good I would guess.

I can see two 'performance windows'. One right now with a group of 26-28 year olds in their prime, and another in 5 years when the current under 22's hit peak performance. Whether either are good enough for a flag is anyones guess.
I lamented a while back that some of our best players from the last decade, like Stuv and Armo, were cooked by their late 20s.

If you look at the premiers over the last decade, you can see that you need as many of your best players playing good football into their mid 30s. If a good whack of our best over 27s play into their mid 30s, then we could potentially challenge over the next 1-10 years (they wouldn't go ten years, but would bridge the gap til the King cohort is well and truly dominant, in theory). I'd say Hill, Wood, Membrey, Sinclair, Marshall, Steele and Wilkie are the ones from that group.

Never met him but he comes across as a ripping guy who gives his all week after week knowing that he is most likely not going to be in the Ones

This is exactly what you need in a backup ruck. If he thinks he should be playing ones every week he will leave, as we all saw with Grundy at Melbourne. Now if you can find a quality ruck who can also play as a forward (ie has real forward craft and can average a goal a game) you’ve got the perfect package but those players are incredibly rare.

Geelong have shown that you can have players contributing well into "old" age. Selwood played to 34. Mitch Duncan is 32. Dangerfield 33.

As you said , Armo and Stuv played their last good seasons with us at the age of 28.
Its not like we drafted a lot of good players back then anyway.
If you draft a young player and it takes 3 years for him to be playing "good" footy, he's 22.
If he retires or leaves at 28 its only 6 years of "good" footy from him.

Ignoring trades and career ending incidents, if you only average 6 years of good service from your players you need to draft an average of 3 good players a year.
If you get 10 years of service from your players you only need to draft 2 good players a year.
( We weren't even averaging 2 from Trout and co ).
Ross for example has only given us 8 years of good footy so far.
Dal Santo played well for 13 seasons and could have gone longer, but we traded him for magic beans.

Once you get players the age of Webster, Ross, Crouch , Hill, Wood, they are unlikely to get poached, and will probably only leave if we push them out. Especially if they are one club players. But meanwhile they are playing pretty decent footy.

George Give Ron the Perennial Whinger badge, he’s earned it.

Maybe we have a thread where it's just training reports so no discussion at all like that rumor thread we would run around trade time

The woke brigade can just read that and this thread stays just as it is.

Just means our resident dwarf boxer will have to repost all training reports into another thread

I’m banned from posting in that trade thread, I have no recollection as to why lmao
