Agree. I don't think personnel is the biggest issue. More about how we deliver it. Numerous times we have gone forward and smaller forwards have made space and are on their own yet we bomb it to Charlie/McKay.

IMO at times we need to lower our eyes and be better with our entries.

Personally, I'm thinking that's the "strategy" given our personnel.

Two elite key forwards.
Bugger all fit and ready medium marking options.
A bunch of smalls who are more about pressure than scoring goals.
Incredibly fit midfield and wing brigade without much in the way of elite disposal.

If there was ever a list that was more suited to "bomb it in", it's us.

Big guys either mark it cause they're better than the oppo defenders, or make a contest and bring it to ground. Smalls either lock it in, or ensure any rebound is rushed and under pressure and ripe for interception and a repeat entry. By the time either of those has taken place, we've got strong representation in our forward 50 with mids and wings pushing forward, and our backline is set up to deny the easy rebound.

The when our better kicks (ie. defensive group) are getting their chance to go inside 50, there's less opportunity to hit up leads because we've flooded the forward zone.

Is it the best approach? FIIK. But I can see the logic.

Our entries looked a lot better earlier in the season when we were generating them from fast breaks off half back. That was giving us an open forward line with heaps of space and only 1-2 targets/defenders, and given we were running in waves we were better able to manufacture a way to get the ball in the hands of a decent kicker. Freo's gameplan stifled that run and carry, and so we slowed the game down ourselves, pushed numbers forward, and tried to make sure that when we went forward the ball at least stayed forward for a while.

If he is sore or injured, absolutely, replace him

I just get the feeling that there is a growing prevalence amongst supporters wanting change, just for the sake of change, rather than a strong rationale
I might be late to this , so apologies if so.

I'd go even further, Arrow. Wen as Carlton supportets, have wanted reflexive change for the sake of it for years. It's just more obvious - and harder to justify - now that we're performing well.

I see Marchy as being in our best team, but he was rusty against the Roos, and then missed a week concussed. I wouldn't bring him straight back in this week, especially with Kemp playing well against Freo.

Lij is a test, but sounds like he's pretty sore, so I figure he misses a week.

Walsh an obvious in for Fog.

I think we'll be somewhat conservative with changes, and with 5-6 half forwards injured, our options are limited.
I figure it's Pitto in, Bot to sub
or Cincotta in as sub.

B: Newman Weitering McGovern
HB: Williams Kemp Saad
C: Acres Cripps O.Hollands
HF: Durdin McKay E.Hollands
F: Kennedy Curnow Owies
OB: TDK Cerra Walsh
IC: Boyd Hewett Cottrell Fantasia
Sub: Carroll

So,
Out: Fogarty In: Walsh (Owies replacing Fog as a starter and Walsh replacing Carroll)

If Williams is out replace him with Cincotta

If Hollands is out keep Carroll as a starter and put Binns sub (I know we don't like debuting players as sub but we are running out of options)

Kemp stays. I don't think Marchbank is enough of an upgrade to replace Kemp given their ages and Marchys lack of durability. Kemp looks much better with Weitering out there.

I think if we don't start scoring from centre clearances teams are just going to do what Freo did and flood our backline, same as in our rough patch last year. Can't rely on Charlie & Harry then, can't find a way to brute force goals through a crowded forward line, can't kick goals from outside 50.

Time for Pittonet to come back into the team.

This is a winning team! Undefeated! No time for experiments, or dropping role players like Oliie. The same people last week were calling for Cotter's to be dropped........
Elijah looked cooked; Fog definitely out via suspension.
Walsh available, Owies released from the sub; why not bring in Moir(?) FancyPants to the sub role.
How do you kick Kemp out of defence with the second most ranking points last game, 14 marks (!), 21 disposals and 4 tackles? Based on what? He dragged the ball in??

Def - Weiters, Kemp, McGov, Saad, Williams, Boyd, Newie

Fwds - Charles, H, Owies, Durds, Cotters, Kennedy, Moir

Mids - TDK, Crippa, Walshie, Cerra, Ollie, Blacres, George, Carroll

Sub - Fantasia
I hate to think what this place will be like the week we actually lose a game. I have to keep checking to make sure that we are still 4-0. :tearsofjoy:

Also TDK, Charlie and Harry are not a good combination in the forward line. Too top heavy, Kemp would add more mobility.
I think so, our third tall forward needs to be a 190cm give or take player not a 200cm give or take player. They need to be someone who is good at ground level, applies, pressure, tackles etc. We have gone more mobile and more run and that has been winning us games.

One thing that wins games is rebounding from defence. We have become good at stopping teams doing that against us. That's part of our identity and a strength that wins us games. Going with another forward who takes those qualities away from us takes our winning identity away from us.

DeKoning has never shown much if anything as a forward. He's having a breakout year as a ruck. I'm not looking to pull that apart.

If Elijah comes and Bot remains in the 22, Cinc would be the perfect sub. He was excellent last week in the VFL playing as a mid - his run and carry from off the bench could be a bit of a weapon against a tiring opposition midfield.

Teams were flooding our forwardline last year pretty heavily. It's a tactic most teams use against us because realistically it's the only way you can stop Charlie and Harry. Teams who do this don't leave enough in the tank to generate attacking play, they have to spend a lot more energy to generate attacking plays so they burn out.

Flooding the backline is an old fashion technique that has become outdated. Teams that do it generally create low scoring games, burn out and finish games/the season poorly. Particularly against teams who keep coming at them and move the ball quickly.

If teams want to do that, fine. We can just keep coming at them, ware them down and beat them in low scoring games.

I don't think Pittonet coming in is a good thing. Part of our identity is our defensiveness from our run and mobility around the forward line and outside in the midfield. That would undo that to a point. It also does not stop teams flooding against us. If teams are going to do that the game is going to be low scoring and close if the opposition is decent. There is nothing we can do about that.

Kemp and Marchbank can absolutely play in the same defence and in fact I would assume Voss wants all 4 talls against GWS for Hogan, Riccardi, Brown and Cadman. Against smaller teams it just free's up McGovern or to push Zac further up the field.

We were undefeated around this time last year going into a match v Adelaide, then it all fell to s**t for a couple of months or so
That is where the comparison ends though, we have won 15 of our last 17 games(?) and we are looking much better than we did a year ago.

I have no doubt that Pittonet will be back in the team when it's deemed to be the right time. He will have an important part to play at the pointy end of the season when the whips are cracking barring injury.

We can and did do something about it though - started kicking the majority of our score from centre clearances before teams could flood numbers back. Pittonet was a big part of that.

Was surprised Harry and Charlie were playing in the same space a lot (too much) on the weekend...

Both are very mobile and pretty quick.....

They need to be told to play separate parts of the forward line....

But also agree a third legitimate marking option forward is a priority - Bam Bam did ok vs. the Dockers....

Fog is a pretty big loss IMO. He's almost a barometer of our pressure game. He's always going absolutely 100% intensity and it must rub off on teammates.

Corey Durdin laid 7 tackles inside 50 last week, let him take the Fogarty role and I sat bring in Ashton Moir to offer something a little different this week.

Walsh in for E Hollands seems the obvious pick if he’s fit.

Happy for Cincotta or Cowan to come in if Williams needs a week rest

Durdin doesn't tackle with the same intensity as Fog.

He got that many i50 because of Freo flooding back.

I thought when we win this week it will be 18 wins from
The last 20 games?
we won 11 out of 13 games last season after starting on our winning run. 4 from 4 this season.
