A season of up and downs for us. From an Opening Round disaster, going 0-3 to start our season, beating Brisbane, Carlton and Melbourne twice to drawing with Freo and Essendon. We had a delayed pre-season due to our flag and McStay injured his ACL in the offseason and didn't return until last month. De Goey was hampered by groin problems all season as well.

We finished 9th after winning our 16th flag which is a huge disappointment after what we achieved last season. We could've made the top 4 if not for the draws vs Essendon and Freo or that near-comeback vs GC and the collapse vs Sydney.

What are your thoughts on 2024 Magpie army? Bring on 2025

My thoughts on the season

Yes it was disappointing to miss finals this year but we were smashed by injuries to key players and just couldn’t get a good run at it with our best on the park. Even with that happening we still almost made it.

We can’t always win the close games and this year we didn’t win as many due to not quite being good enough. The positive side of the injuries is we got some games into some of the younger guys and got to find out a bit more about them.

Hopefully with a bit more luck on the injury front next year and getting degoey checkers and Mitchell back fully fit and firing we will be back in the finals next year and vying for flag number 17.

Best wins for the year round 3 against the lions and both wins against the blues, nothing better than beating them imo.
Worst losses, the sydney game which we had won but went defensive like in some other games as well which cost us, and the bombers loss as well. Hawks loss was bad but they are belting teams atm.

Go pies and onto 2025

It was a season of what ifs unfortunately. If we weren’t screwed in the Freo game by that bald campaigner and didn’t choke against Sydney minimum we’d be preparing for an elimination final right now.

The losing streak after the bye was the most costly moment IMO.

But the way we finished the year at least gives us confidence we can do what the Cats have done this year and bounce back very quickly. Make the right moves in trade period and with (hopefully) an easier draw, a longer preseason and hopefully we’re not a part of that opening round nonsense, we can get back in the 8 and have one last true crack with our legends.

Can’t wait.

The Freo drawn game was not great

I was very pessimistic after the first 3 games… I wrote the season off to the annoyance of some others

it wasn’t just the losses by big margins making top 4 difficult from that point on

…. But the complete lack of fire, effort and cohesion

Things improved after that.

Pies went 12 wins, 6 loses and 2 draws from there and the percentage went up 28%

Was buoyed by the mid season form considering some of the injuries at the time but injuries persisted and things fell away

Considering the flag and the expectation of a top 4 finish… the pies of 2024 score an F for fail

The silver lining to the year being the development of some of the youth and theoretically an easier draw in 2025

The club has chosen to roll the dice one more time on a flag with the current group of veterans

Fast forward 12 months and we’ll know more whether that was the right decision
