We've brought in a young ruck from Centrals as a development player, so there's one. Bloke from Sydney isn't exactly at the top of his development curve either.

Then there's the Toby Murray option.

I'm as critical as anyone of our lack of a young ruck, but we've now got 2 and maybe 3 in our SANFL setup.
Saxon Evans at this point would seem to be a longshot to ever be an AFL lead ruck given like Strachan he's been picked up from a country league?

Still can't work out why we've neglected our ruck situation for so long, it's the one black mark against Reidy IMO.

I'd agree it's been a fairly big blind spot.

I'm pretty certain our plan pre draft with RT was not to play him deep forward. But still, we've known that was probably the way we'd go for a while.

Because I don't think rucks are going to be the difference between a good season and a bad one.
They will be if ROB is out for any significant time as we have no decent backup option.
.
It's our biggest list risk.

I think they're happy with ROB, and the plan is always to have a minimum wage backup.

Reid spoke on Sensible Crow about the errors they feel they've made in the past with too many rucks on the list who all need the same development time leading the ruck. Maybe they've over compensated too far in the other direction.

This off season will be interesting. Reid doesn't have a black mark yet but he will if this doesn't get improved for next year

Its a risk, but if hes the biggest injury we have all year we wont be in much of a different place than we would be if he played the whole year.
Yes it will, ROB isn’t the worst ruck in the league and we will go to having the worst ruck in the league and with one that will have to ruck out the season.

As it stands though we don’t even have an AFL replacement on the AFL list with Strachan also being injured and if I’m not incorrect the earliest would be the MSD we can bring on a replacement.

What if ROB goes down rd 1? After the MSD?

The silver lining if ROB goes down might be Thilthorpe being forced to ruck and he completely changes the dynamic of our midfield and we are able to kick enough goals without Thilthorpe up forward. A ROB rucked midfield has been unable to elevate itself above half way up the ladder for the entire time he's been there...

I have Thilthorpe as a genuine breakout this year by spending a minimum of 25% ruck time and think if ROB went down
he would be our option .
Jan 17 was bigman first training report last pre season on stoppage set up and form so looking forward to some
reports from him on this and TT especially.

Having said that we should not be in this position as a club, poor management.

Preseason:

From an individual perspective I thought Thilthorpe was the standout today. Played with a real presence whether it was his marking, ruck work (outpointed strachan and rob a few times in the stoppage drills) or his follow up and willingness to bust through tackles. Kicked a couple snags and looked really good. Seems to train better when he ditches the questionable bucket hat.

Thilthorpe - quiet early on and dropped an easy mark that would’ve been a certain goal, but went bang in the second period with three consecutive snags all from contested marks on dragon. Then took another on worrell early in the final period playing almost exclusively as a ruckman. When he gets his confidence up he becomes seriously hard to stop. Exciting stuff.

But where did the rumour come from re draper? I said at the time, the source that told me that our target was Draper in the draft called him "Sam Draper" when we first spoke. I corrected him at the time and said "you mean Sid" to which he then humbly agreed. Had he been telling others that our target was "Sam Draper" too? The Sam Draper rumour coincidentally same around the same time as I posted my info.
I know him and his family personally, he wants to come home to Adelaide, he made both SA clubs aware of his desire to return home, Essendon also know but want to keep him so will spend the year trying to convince him to stay, he does love playing for Essendon but homesickness really is eating him alive

Perhaps he shouldn't have taken the piss out of us last year after he flopped to the ground. He's not going to be a fan favourite if he comes here, that's for sure.

I think the mullet probably helps him get a few people onto his side - it's the missing goals from 10m out that might turn people against him.

oh please
the entire facebook and clapper community will embrace him the moment he puts on a crows guernsey

We kept rolling the dice on being able to fill the hole by recruiting a 22-23 year old, someone like Ned Moyle who had that 2-4 years of development in them and were really to roll and fill the hole for the next 6-7 years.

We bombed out on those attempts, so now have to hit panic stations because we found out Strachan can't make the full-time leap to AFL level and we had no one else behind him to fill in now he's injured.

Maybe.

We'd only bring him in if ROB is leaving, and Strachan will be gone too. They'll bring a developing ruck by default.
Not necessarily. Draper is a straight replacement for ROB. Then they just need to trade/FA a Graham/Lowden type, as the Strachan replacement. There's no reason to think that they'll draft a development ruckman.

It's also quite likely that they think they already have the development ruckman on the list - Turray.

Possibly but all indicators suggest we are moving away from this

How does Toby develop if we have McAndrew etc
