Can be both, and can become very problematic.

As Daz said, it can take a long time to heal, but can deteriorate quickly too.

Cheers,

My injury sounds more painful than it felt at the time - playing footy during PE class, I had possession & went to handball when I was tackled/pushed from behind and I landed on my right wrist (which was in a fist to handball, with thumb on the outside) and rolled my whole body over that

It didn't really hurt immediately so I tried playing on & then noticed something wasn't right and a lump forming

Off to the doctors, get an x-ray and it showed multiple breaks/fractures either side of the wrist & base of the thumb. As there was no displacement they decided surgery wasn't needed and as much as it healed in a cast, I do notice less movement in that wrist & thumb compared with my left

It's one of the reasons I was curious if things have changed in the 20yrs since, because it is interesting to see how injuries/broken bones get treated over time, and more so sports-people versus normal folk

The scaphoid is a small bone between the ends of the bones in the forearm and the bones in the fingers.

A little sucker with the potential to cause big problems.

A talented team-mate of mine was prematurely forced from sport by a scaphoid fracture failing to heal as hoped, even after surgery.

Most scaphoid fractures in professional athletes are fixed immediately with screw and occasionally bone graft, to ensure healing. Waiting for healing in scaphoid casts for 6 weeks was often associated with delayed healing.

So what is the verdict for Tomahawk?

While it looks a serious injury, it wouldn't have been classed as critical where he goes to hospital post match for scans on a Friday night

There'll likely be news out over the next couple of days, but it'll take longer than 12 hours

I'm going for either a navicular, or he tore the plantar fascia clean off.

Either way, painful as hell, and I don't think we'll see him again for most of the season if at all.

Although not having seen the vision of it at all, could it be a recurrence of the foot problem he had surgery for? Or is the other foot?

As per Mitch Cleary, Geelong is still working through Hawkins injury and awaiting further assessment tomorrow

He's had scans but they're wanting to check in with specialists who weren't available over the weekend before making any decisions or announcements

But Peter Larkins (doctor!) has already diagnosed it for us - so I don’t need to wait for those lazy specialists. 😳

The other story in the piece was Butters getting a fine for his 4th (!) striking charge of the year. Some would say his punishments are not working as a deterrent!

Isn't the the toe bone connected to the foot bone, which is connected to the leg bone, which is connected to the......
Interesting question. If the turf toe has been an issue and causing gait problems, etc, it is more than likely that any midfoot issue is a consequence. But only surmising here.

Doc Larkins gets unfairly belted imo... He is asked an opinion, he's says what it could be based off what he has seen and if that is the case what the time frame would be... It's just an if and but thing that the media do with him and people shit on him for it

And much much much more often than not he is right
