Surely any analysis on pick value should take into account all players reasonably available at a certain pick, rather than specifically those taken at 25?

Not all clubs will have the same talent order. You're better off looking at players drafted between 25-40 or so to determine the chances of getting a good player at that pick. Otherwise it's very flawed analysis.

It'd be like saying pick 23 sucks because Will Walker went there, ignoring that Balta, Kelly, Daniels, Ryan and Sam Taylor were all on the board too and predicted in that range.

I like it. And let’s attribute it to another trade. So by taking Shai Bolton, Dockers have given up the chance to take 2 of Tom Green, Pickett, Will Day, Cody Weightman, Sam De Koning (2019) Nick Blakey, Zac Butters, Issac Quaynor, Jordan Clarke, Bobby Hill, Tom Sparrow (2018) Darcy Fogarty, Zac Bailey, Ed Richards, Starcevich, Oscar Allen (2017).

Would you give up 2 of those players mentioned, for Shai Bolton. As that’s what Freo have done. As all those were available at pick 10 and 11.

It's a more.accurate way of assessing the trade than solely listing players taken at picks 10 and 11 only

It's absolutely a consideration there.

The major difference being that Shai Bolton will be 26 for all of next season, is a front half match winner and Fremantle are a finals side with young depth across virtually every line.

Richmond obviously DID do it.

Pick 25 was overs, but whatever. We wanted a contracted player. You wouldn't wanted to be trading them out all the time.

On the flipside, the "steak knives" in the Parker deal was pick 20 2 years ago.

Thats exactly the way to look at it not what Daniels cost us but what we gave up for the three of them together. It looks pretty fair to me.

But what if the next Patrick Cripps is available at pick 10, and the next Bont is at pick 11? Would you trade away those 2 for Shai Bolton?

So look at the best case scenario of someone who could be picked at that pick? No one would ever trade picks.

I don't think assessing who went at a particular pick in the past is a good way to assess the value of a pick or a trade in the first place. Context is important.

I was just pointing out that only considering players taken with a specific.pick number is flawed because it assumes every club would have picked the same player, or that there's a fixed order of talent.

Lmac and Jy had great leaders and roll models. Look at them now… devoid of leadership.

People keep talking about draft picks being magic beans. The only magic beans I see are Caleb, Parker and Darling the way they are being talked up on how their leadership is going to impact this playing list even well after their careers are over.

Absolutely this

Even LDU had Cunners etc

But it does give some context that giving up this pick is not giving up a certain gun, it’s giving up the CHANCE to pick up a gun.

And as the history of pick 25 shows, and I assume if you looked at most of the pick selections in round 2 and 3 would be the same, it’s bloody hard to pick good players outside the first round. No club nails it consistently.

I think its also better to consider our history at picking at 25+ rather than other clubs
