Interesting that a lot of people are supportive of Darling to provide leadership.
I have it on very, very good authority that he is not popular with fellow players at WC, that his wife is an overbearing and contentious figure (shades of Ben Brown) and that senior officials at WC just want him gone.
If only we had a somebody like a 300 game premiership player and former captain who still loved the club, was good mates with Brady and Clarko, and had coached the man for the last decade who we could call and ask about Darling before we approached him.

Ralphy's just making stuff up with the pick 30. It's a late pick if anything as we'd take the full salary.
I would guess WCE want Darling out the door to play young kids and shed his 800k salary to bring in Jack Graham (UFA), Liam Baker or Riley Garcia in trades. They'd also want to sign Oscar Allen and Waterman to big deals as well.
I very much doubt that WCE would have cap issues though, they'd be like us, trying to hit the salary floor.

Tell me how adding a guy to our forward line that is a complete liability going to help Larkey?
He might lay the odd tackle, which will be a novelty for our forward line.

Also, I know this sounds crazy - but we might actually draft some good key forwards this year, and the youngsters could benefit from an elder statesman showing them the craft and work required in the gym.

Hire him as a development coach then.

Its gonna get done for a fourth rounder mate.

The options at that price point are Darling, Membrey or Day.

Sure we could take pick 58 to the draft and hope and pray we get the next Souv or Calsher Dear that everyone else misses, but they'll need a years development before we can hope for them to play a game, which is too late for our purposes.

My fear is that if some of our reported trade targets are true, we will be trading for the right talent to push for a 9th to 12th ladder position. I.e. trading in just enough moderate remaining talent from past-their-use-by-date elder statesman to escape the bottom rungs of the ladder for no man’s land. Right back to where we were before the long Brad Scott induced nightmare began.

I hope we’re not just doing all this out of desperation to get out of our hole to “anywhere but here will do”.

I get that we lack mature heads to guide the kids coming through. But if the likes of Darling are our only options, then I’m concerned. No short cuts, no sh1t cuts.

I doubt any of them will help us rise out of the bottom four immediately even if we got to 6-8 wins.
Anyone mature we bring in won't cost that much draft capital. It's 3rd/4th/5th round picks.
I'm not so keen on Macrae or Darling as they are lone wolfs. I want more of a leader like Parker.
I'm very much of the view don't start trading out 1st and 2nd rounders unless its a quality player (Andrew, Callaghan or Aleer from GWS for example) and let's be honest those players aren't coming to us right now.

Without taking into account contract situations, I'd be pretty confident that at least 10 of them would be gone, maybe even more. I'm hoping that the 50-50's would only be depth players at that stage (unless they improve significantly)

Gone: Mcdonald, K.Dawson, Shiels (obviously), Pink and Teakle.

Highly Likely Gone: Phillips & RJH

50-50: Corr, Stephens, Fisher & Tucker
Unfortunately McDonald won’t be going nowhere as he will be captain

I rather it not get done at all. Does nothing to help Larkey as he’s beyond cooked and he is not a leader in any form.
I can see the value in his tackle numbers a kpf and apparently he has a good work ethic off field but ... yeah. We replace him and get another goal+ every two games on average and and extra two tackles per game on average.

Also...

They say history never repeats but W80 was 32 and cooked when he came to us.

Thats what we need though.
Mature bodies to carry us while our younger players mature and push training standards.
