Remember when this board absolutely shat on idea of getting Melican for not much from Sydney?

He played basically every game for the Swans this year and plays off for a flag next week.

That’s the definition of this board during trade week. Everyone is a “shitmen” but then during the year we complain so much about our own.

I think both GWS and GC recruited a similar amount of mature players. GC targeted players between 25 and 30 with players like Ablett, Boch, Harbrow, etc. Where as GWS went after younger types like Ward, Davis, Scully, etc and then added some experience with older types like McDonald, Cornes, Brogan and Power.

GWS = signed experienced, mature 29+ players along with two extremely successful ex premiership coaches, throw in Gubby Allen to oversee the footy dept, Paul Kelly basically to sell the club to NSW players, John Quinn to oversee the medicos..along with excellent drafting/AFL assistant...basically the model you'd probably used to build a club from scratch.

GC= Spent a lot of effort recruiting Ablett Jr. Signed a lot of uncontracted players like Josh Fraser to Campbell Brown, AFL instilled Auld on the board, a rookie coach in Mckenna but really wanted North to relocate, that was the AFL trump card. When that didn't happen, Ablett did well to nearly march them to a finals but it's probably the example of how not to build a team from scratch...and really this is the AFLs club .

Do we? He could stay but if he does then we move on to the next option.
Which is?

Fair bit to play out in terms of us landing Parker me thinks.

The selfless role he played last night though is 100% why he is exactly the type we need to be going after.

There’d be a fair bit less aggro from the supporter base (at least my camp) if the clubs approach to experience was quality over quantity. I don’t mean stars of the comp, I mean guys with that leadership pedigree. Opposed to what appears to be just anyone with a DOB 28+.

You’d think some of the other under performing teams like aints and * need some leadership

Said it before but we need to go get Ollie Lord

When you have a cooked Dixon playing over you all year and finlayson when not injured it should mean you look elsewhere

What would it take?

Future 1st for both Houston and Lord???

We have suddenly become a destination club for players wanting to get their 300th game. We offer no pressure in getting dropped. Who else can we attract aside from Darling and Parker out there? Which of our current players will get to chair them in their milestone game? Ooh the excitement 2025 brings 🤣
yeah but it speaks to their longevity, and if you've ever listened to boomer at length he puts that down to preparation, which you could also say there a large degree of professionalism involved.

You would probably just about do it.

Lord as an option up forward gives us plenty of flexibility and is only 22.

Not sure he goes anywhere given Dixon is gone and Marshall is probably a concussion away from retirement.

They’d also won a conveyor belt of premierships in the 19s so already had success together.

That’s often discounted when we reminisce.

A couple of experienced players added to the list is only going to do us good.

Big Ischenko was at the end of his career and no superstar but was effective in allowing McKernan time to develop.

Blakey came at 27 and was a rock down back and on the wing for us, no doubt assisting the development of our youngsters.

We need experience desperately and that’s only going to fast track the development of the significant talent we already have on our list.
Also had a core of older guys ...Matt Armstrong came in, Clarko himself was there till 95 IIRC, Ross Smith played in the 96 VFL premiership, Matty Larkin and Peter German were there through to 93 or 94 maybe through that teams development years.

Lord is little better than Sellers. Not only are those hacks in front of Ollie, but Esava is playing forward because Port dont rate him at all.

Doesn’t make them right about him

He’s also had some injuries this year which didn’t help

Tarps are dumb and lord should request a trade

He is struggling in the SANFL. I don't see why we would go there.

I thought that this bloke was going to explode, but it’s like he has made himself too big.

When he was flying last season, he actually played a little like, dare I say it in this thread, Jarrad Waite. Athletic, stringy, bit of aggression.

Watching him this year, looks like he can hardly move cause he is too big.

The more I think about it, the more it makes sense to trade out of next year's draft and try get Houston into the club. We don't and shouldn't need many more top 5 picks.

We should have won 5 games this year. Yes the last 2 games were shit, but we should beaten the Pies and WC.

A full season from Logue, a better Larkey season, leadership of Parker & Houston, plus the natural improvement from Wardlaw, Sheezel, Colby, Curtis, Archer etc should net us 7-8 wins. Surely we can 'pop' if we learn how to win.

Take a FOS, Reid or Armstrong with pick 2. And maybe a Faull, Whitlock or Dattoli at pick 22. Can we get our hands on Brisbane's pick 18 or Essendon's pick 28?

Target a Balta as a FA next year and the premiership window could be open in 2026.
