To be fair I don’t think Newcombe was a realistic option for us. Jacob Edwards was the #1 for all clubs.
Jedwards wasn't number 1 for Hawthorn. As we've seen just yesterday, their talent ID has led them out of their mess very, very well.

Newcombe was starring against men, while Edwards had a few marks against blokes younger than him, and was half hearted about putting himself in the MSD. Alarm bells should have absolutely been ringing.

Chol said Hawthorn the only ones to offer him that length of contract.

We could've had Mass in the MSD.

We either didn't think Newcombe was the best MSD in his year, or we didn't think he was worth the 4 years.

They are certainly missed opportunities.
So are you saying we should of offered lets use Chol as the example a 5 year deal just to get him.

the only reason he was not their 1st choice was because they where looking for a inside mid not a KPP Good on them great pick Hawks

Not sure there where to many complaints at the time for who we picked Infront of Newcombe.
Many of us dont watch that much of the VFL or other comps to know. I do wonder what the knocks on him were. Particularly when watching him run away from Simpkin, while being stronger and more skilled than our skipper as well.

Im not a draft expert, so to me its a matter of asking what the experts thought wouldn't be AFL standard about him?

I don't know. All I know is Chol's interview where he said that Hawthorn were the only ones to offer 4 years.
To be fair he had only had 1 good year in 6 years before this year. Like i said earlier we are not that far away from plenty success Not to bothered about not having Chol there to enjoy it.

Its a bit like this year i reckon Do we pick a mid FOS Draper and company or do we go KPP Armstrong and company. What is the right pick who knows yet .The club wanted a KPP so rightfully picked Edwards There was no knocks on Newcombe and rightly, so he is a very good player.

I think that it's all between the ears and a lack of leadership, rather than a lack of talent and missed opportunities.

We've looked like world beaters for sections of games against good sides and it's generally not strategy that ends the run. It's 3 things...

  • a senior player doing something monumentally stupid that costs us a goal
  • the last 2 minutes of a quarter
  • going into the 4th with a lead

You can physically see the mentality change in these situations and reliably predict the upcoming avalanche of goals.

Yes there is! From early in the year most people said they can put up with most things at the moment because of where we're coming from and all the players we got rid off, they also said, "I just want to see some improvement, a light at the end of the tunnel, something, anything, just be competitive for ***** sake"!

Now here we are, its over, our season has come to an end, so what have we learned. Well for starters, after the mid-season break, things started to change, apart from a couple of games against top teams we weren't only competitive but very unlucky to not win at least five games, do you think that the last game against Hawthorn changed anything? Do you think the Hawks game eradicated all the good efforts after the bye because if you did you are a very hard taskmaster.

In essence it did not, I'm not going to go into details because people are hurt, angry, blank, broken and despondent and don't want to hear excuses, and I get it but if you can truly look through the broken glass then you'll see what I've been seeing since that Fremantle game.

(1) Tristan Xerri, wow what a year, I guess all the posters that either wanted to trade him or sack him were a little off track!
"All Australian", selection is almost on the cards for a fabulous year, who would have predicted that?

(2) Harry, you know when most not all draftees have a great year its quite hard to then back it up the following year but back it up he did, his play at times was dare I say it Scott Pendlebury like, "time just seemed to stand still", what a player!

(3) Charlie Comben, Unbelievable year, when you consider anything he did early on, an injury seemed to crop up, can see him being quite special in our team in the future and now some people can also see why we were very, very excited by his development in those early years and what he could be in our future team, breakout year indeed!

(4) Colby Mckercher, well I've seen a few people not impressed by Colby, now after seven years of Tristan finally coming good or shall I say great and what people had to say about him I'm not surprised, Colby showed not only why we took him but that his improvement is going to get better and better, a gun young player and will be one of the players responsible for getting us to where we are going to end up, when he gets to his rightful position!

(5) Jackson Archer, you wanted a small defender well here you are people, can only get better and his knowledge and confidence will get to a point where he's a set and forget player, progressing beautifully!

(6) The inside excitement of Brayden George, Finnbar Maley, Josh Goater, Zane Duursma and Will Dawson is at a very high level and people here also saying our development was no good, better not jump ship just yet folks, its going to get real interesting in the next two years!

(7) I know I've said it quite a few times but THIS DRAFT AND TRADE/FREE AGENCY PERIOD this year is going to be the most important in our history, if we nail both of them and I think we will, this will set us up, some people have said we have got our list, not quite, some people have said that we are nowhere near it, not from where I'm sitting and yes I can hear the jokes, is it hard to hear or listen to that our list is strategically coming together at last, then watch what we do at the trade/free agency, could be compelling viewing and the draft I have a strong suspicion you might want to double that!

Great rational post TS. Disappointing way to end yes, but no way will it eradicate the significant progress we have made and the specifics you have mentioned above. The perf might affect some players' desire to come to us but if they have had their opinion swayed prob not the ones for us anyway.

Big trade and draft period, huge pre season and we go again. Hopefully unlike last preseason all players should return post cleanup ops ready and raring...

Womens on now, so can get used to North being a dominant force once more...

This is all well and good Mr Rawlings....but what on earth would make you think we'll nail the drafting and trading based on previous efforts????

I must admit, we have hit a lot more than we missed in the last 3-4 years of drafts compared to the Joyce years. The youth can clearly play.

Recruits/draftees all have the same issues as the previous alum, they’re stepping into a soft workplace that only knows defeat.

Of the five we took last year, only one had any impact this year
Now it's clearly too early to judge, but neither can we guarantee it's going to prove a successful draft.

You're right about it being mental. It's happened to a lot of sides this year. I watched it almost happen to Brisbane last night, after it did happen to them last week. You could sense the momentum shift and see their dominant side scatter into panic. Their senior heads saved them from disaster against the Bombers, whilst Collingwood's seniors drove them to victory last week.

Addressing the leadership of the group is one of our highest priorities this off-season. We all saw Sheezel drag us back to life for a period in that Geelong game, kick an important goal in the Dees game, etc. There's our future. How we pave the road to him being captain and the likes of McDonald and Simpkin not being captain will be interesting.

There is no doubt he will be our captain at some stage but even the bloke himself said he is not ready for it even though he probably could do it now and to a great job. His time will come.

The only real way i see it atm is the phasing out of LMac all together. Simpkin sole captain next year and played mainly as a high half forward.
Lmac is a solid 1v1 defender, but so much attack is created from the back half these days. Its almost flipped on its head, defenders attack and forwards defend.

Absolutely. Next year is a bit of limbo in that way, a bridge to the Sheezel years. Potentially I could see Simpkin becoming the sole captain for some continuity, and maybe spending less time in the middle as he is backed up by some senior trade targets. McDonald can either play freely without the expectation of carrying the side or be dropped for a Goater or whomever.

My thoughts exactly, as you'll read above 😁

We have the nucleus of a first-class midfield; no doubt we will need to add more players, if only for depth.

However, talls take more time. If we want to draft talls, we should do so in this year's draft, so they will be able to contribute when we begin to become genuinely competitive.

And, either by trade or by draft, get at least one, but preferably two, small forwards who will chase and harrass so that we can keep the footy in our forward half. Our current forward configuration is a disaster that happens all of the time.

Our refusal to prioritise small forwards since LT left is absolutely damaging. How many goals.did Hawks small forwards kick yesterday?

RHJ has shown a fair bit, but his tackling is in need of improvement. Theres enough there to work with imo. Im all for getting Draper to help in this area as well, being a quick and skilled mid/fwd. Theres no reason he cant be more a fwd/mid for his first years giving us more time to address to the small fwd issue. Simpkin mainly as a forward should help with the pressure as well. But he tends to be more a marking player when forward, where Draper and RHJ more natural front and center types. But its still a lot more pace injected into our forward half.
If Simpkin can get his dancing feet back with his improved goal kicking he could be a real positive for us.
