Game Day 2024 Trade Period - Lian Yu - that liminal space between trade and draft.

I'm surprised anyone is still surprised or angry 11 was involved.

It was obvious on day 1 we'd fold and include 11. I thought it might be 10 and 11 with 24 back, valuing him at 5. In the end according to someone above this values him at 4. So instead of 18 and 24 we now have 14 and a F3.

It's acceptable, as Fat Nyfe said above the aim is to win flags not trades. We've got an absolute A grader
For better or for worse, once the floor was set at 10 + 18 and the ceiling was 10 + 11, was always gonna end up in btwn. I would've preferred if it was 10 + 18 but then we give like a F2 to keep 11 intact. But I guess btwn future trade priorities + NGAs next year they didn't want to nerf their future draft hand.

The last time we traded pick 11 for 14 was part of the Lobb trade. Giants picked Hately and we picked Sturt. Jordan Clark and Ned McHenry went in between.

Very happy having Bolton, but there's no sugar coating we overpaid again. To not get a pick in the 20's or 30's back is weak from Wallsy.

#14 is still a good shot at Berry, so not a bad result overall, but highlights how we again overpaid to bring a player home.
I agree, but he had 4 years to run on his contract & I assume they’re paying a chunk of his salary. They’d have a fair bit of room in there.

Pick 18 had nothing to do with Schultz. And the luck on the Schultz trade doesn’t really change anything - Pick 11 is Pick 11 no matter how it got to the club.

Having said all that I fail to see how this trade is that much worse than Picks 10 and 18 was.

Pick 37 next year will be handy for us if our NGA guys are much good and/or if we trade our first rounder for a gun player.
My preference was to slide both 11>14 and 18>24, but the Future 3 which will likely fall around 39-42 is a handy pick. Also we can use the Freo F3 with pick 30 to move up or combine with 67 to move up on draft night. It’s looking like 30 will only slide back a couple of spots because Brisbane have 29 to use on Ashcroft and Essendon have 28 to use on Kako.

Appears as though Richmond will throw a bunch of late picks to GC so our 67 will come back quite a bit.

Our first two picks 17,32

Then could use our own F3 and the later pick to move forward to get a slider we like in the 40’s.

Well let’s do some analysis. Who could pick up Berry as pics before us. I genuinely think Richmond will pick and Barry with 11 have so many chances to pick up midfielders defenders. Barry will be sitting in the middle of all pics.

Were we too reasonable with our first offer? Hindsight hero stuff but what if we started with 11&30 and then compromised from there. I’m not melting at this trade FWIW but boy did did pay full price. Seems our reasonableness with our first offer may have put us on the back foot. A bit more campaigneriness wouldn’t go stray at times.

Unlike others, I am not convinced should be played as a forward pocket.

As long as we can priortise this need through the draft, I can tolerate the trade.

Berry, Hannaford, ......
I would like us to draft two players who can play as a forward pocket.

We don't need to go overboard on drafting small forward pockets. Would be happy enough with one from the draft (my preference is Hannaford), but we've still got Bolton, Switta, Freddy, Simpson, Delean. Possibly Kozzie is now properly in play to join his cousin Bolton.

I would argue that medium types like Davis and Hynes are perhaps an even bigger need, especially when you look at the grand finalists who only play 1 small forward each and lean more towards medium and/or midfield types (Lohmann, Ah Chee, Rayner, Hayward, Parker, Heeney). All we have is Sturt and then guys we don't want near the side in Banfield and Emmett.

Can anyone explain what draft capital we have at our hands to lure a Warner/Pickett next year? The only extra pick I'm aware of is the F3 we've just nabbed from Richmond, but I'm not too across all this.

Surely we don't have the picks to get it done without trading our 14/30 into next year or am I missing something?

11 becomes super important with West Coast now receiving pick 12 from Carlton in the pick 3 split/Baker trade. It means we get to decide who we want directly before West Coast at 12, which could potentially be Bo Allen, the pick of the West Australians this year. To get Bolton and still be ahead of West Coast in the draft, after the year they've had, would be absolutely delicious, and might i say, imperative. To trade 10, 11 and 18 out for 14 and therefore move to behind the Eagle's pick 12 in the draft, would for me, be a complete disaster and dealbreaker.

Casual Vic footy fans suggesting this trade aren't aware of the Bo Allen factor...because...well..tbh they dont know anything about upcoming WAFL talent.
Allen can go to Methcoast. Don’t rate him as a top 20 draftee

Compare the pair

Net results Fremantle - Schultz and a 4 pick slide (10 to 14) for Bolton*

Net results West Coast - 9 pick slide (3 to 12) for Baker and Owies

* the two second rounders paid to Port for 18 are roughly offset by also getting the pick for Cooper Simpson and the F3 from Richmond

We will have our 2025,26,27 picks to use.

Bolton is a high half forward, as is Switta, Freddy, Simpson
Dealan is playing reserves.

I would argue we don't have an AFL quality forward pocket on our list.

My thoughts are you draft 2, and one should make it.
