It’s bat shit crazy some of the thinking that’s getting around this- “happy to pay 10/11 for Bolten , happy to pay 10,11,18 for Bolten baker etc

Everyday we’re seeing more and more just how highly rated this draft is , are people not taking that in to account?

You’ve got that Melbourne deal for 9 -btw MFC might be a dumpster fire atm but their recruiters are one of the leagues best ,every bit as good as walls in talent ID so if they’re desperate for picks around 10 wtf does that tell you??

Kevin Sheehan calling it top 3 drafts of the last 20 years

If freo were to give up all 3 first draft picks for an A grade and B grade ONLY player then yeah it’s pretty much 2001 repeated for this club .
who gives a **** what some randos on bigfooty think right now anyway? its all speculation on speculation

listen to what brierty was saying, theyre not going to overspend

I mean I sort of agree all three is too much (unless the wage contribution for Bolton is VERY significant) but you do realise we finished last in 2001 right? And 12th 15th and 15th the previous three seasons in a 16 team competition.
The situation is a little different now.

I dont want Baker because he is only a marginal upgrade on the guy you are going to drop to get him in the team, whether that be Freddy, Switta or a Wagner and he will by definition therefore, cost too much.

Shai on the other hand will replace the legend Son Son and should be a worthy heir and is a clear need.

I don’t care how much they rate Baker. You don’t give up pick 11 (worth a first, two seconds, and two third rounders in this draft apparently) for an out of contract 27 year old role player. Two second should be enough for him.
Yeah it's too much but there must be obviously stuff coming back from the Tigers.

Anytime people bemoan the lost opportunity to draft the genuinely good players we could have got instead of Hogan in the 2018 draft, hold onto that feeling, bathe in it, brush your teeth to it, dance with your partner to it - because the feeling will return in 4 years.

I absolutely promise with 200 million percent certainty that we will regret giving over three first round picks for Bolton.

Yeah it's laughable but I'll bet that the idea has been floated by Freo to Richmond. Freo want best deal and Richmond don't want to hold on too long before some picks possible go elsewhere.

Yeah probably. To be honest though I always wonder if these deals are done and the AFL doesn't lodge the papers until the last gasp for shits and giggles.

No.

Baker has nominated WC. Why would he change his mind now? He can't be sent to a club against his wishes.

Baker is a decent player however I don't know he would add anything special to our team. Unlike Bolton who would add something special to any team.

Because getting to WA for family reasons is his priority and maybe WCE can't organise a trade that he's content with.

So you pitch a straw man that isn’t going to happen and then say “look at me!!”

It’s got nothing to do with family, his family are in lake grace lol bro just wants to come home

Really respect the guy for his passion for what he does and seems to really know his stuff.

Having said that I've only ever heard positive stuff come out of his mouth in the whole time I've been following the draft. I like him as a draft follower but he's so positive about everything draft related you've almost got to take that into account.

Baker's about a 5% chance of coming here at best.

But about 95% chance of continually being linked to us in trade media (in their madcap search for fodder to squat and dump out).

Player drafted at pick 73

"I love this kid, he's elite in everything he does, beautiful kick, strongly built, great set of hands, he could be a ripper player"

Player delisted 2 years later. 0 games

Why would we also want someone who doesn't clearly wanna come here?
Clearly we don't. Freo has put years of work Into building a culture where everyone buys in, they won't change that now.

This is a far more tactical move than just seeking Baker on his own merits.

Baker will either change his mind and accept Freo, or he won't. (bloody doubtful, given he's clearly wanted WC all along). Clearly however we must feel we can still change his mind.

Assuming he actually chooses us for a moment, even if he comes, we have no requirement to make him a regular B22 player, especially if he doesn't want to buy in to the culture, and just views us as a cynical ticket home. If he comes willingly and fully buys in, then great. If he comes grudgingly then we have a good back-up for Switta who let's face it, is a bit injury prone. Baker is brilliant depth, and a good "break glass" emergency option for a whole host of regular B22 players (I note there's no mention of the length of Baker"s contrac, or the amount of remuneration. I doubt either of these numbers are very large compared to Bolton's for this exact reason).

Most likely however Baker won't come at all, as clearly he wants to be somewhere else. Yes it's a bit of a calculated gamble by us asking for him, but it's only a very small one, given it's unlikely success.

What's more important to consider here, is the tactics and optics of this offer:

It forces Richmond to put pressure on Baker to potentially agree to the offer, and to similarly pressure WC to match or better that offer. (Richmond can't really force him, as he's OOC)

- it says to Richmond you're not getting 11 for Bolton, as we want to acquire another good player with it for our list, of Baker's standard. Maybe there's someone else at Richmond willing to jump ship that we want? Maybe not. Either way, it says we've reached out limit with the Bolton trade, as we really need another classy player besides Bolton, so take it or leave it.

- If successful, this tells the Freo faithful "look we got two great players for our list". If unsuccessful, it says "we left no stone unturned sorry, but Baker wouldn't come".

- it forces WC to dig deep to get Baker... Never a bad thing. What would WC offer us to get pick 18 I wonder? Methinks it'll hurt to part with it. Doubt they can afford 11., but if they can, given this year's draft, it'll REALLY cost them.

- if Richmond can't convince Baker to say yes, and WC can't pony up a pick around the 11 to 18 Mark, then it puts extra pressure on Richmond to just accept 10 and 18. Freo have already said to the entire comp they're happy to trade 11 to next year. This offer is them saying they will also consider trading it for an established, really good midfielder / forward... Like Baker, or Kossie, or Chad, or anybody else they can shake loose from another club.

Point being, as others have already said, Freo really cannot lose from this position. The absolute WORST outcome, is we take all three to the draft. Now THAT'S a losing position I am comfortable with!!

tbf missing out on King due to the Hogan trade hurts less now than it did 12 months ago. King has shown to be injury prone and has stalled in his development, and Hogan has demonstrated to be an elite talent who was worth the price - albeit we missed out on it due to well publicised factors.
Having Amiss and Treacy also helps.

Tends to be the way before the draft but I think there's been similar sort of noise around other drafts e.g. 2018, which ultimately panned out. He's not the only one saying it.

I guess it just adds a bit to not being upset if we actually take the picks
