Hamling made a bad football playing career decision but financially he locked 2 years of salary. He may have been delisted after 1 year with us. We originally offered him a rookie spot and then upgraded to primary list but for only 1 year.

His presence would have definitely impacted development of Draper (and Hugh Davies) in terms of playing AFL.
We ended up offering him two years in the end. He's said that himself.

We offered 2

That offer then went to McDonald

Oscar McDonald is three years younger than Joel Hamling, potentially a longer period of mature body depth.

He shouldn't even have been offered that. He was finished as an AFL player. Lost too much athletism. I suspect if our list demographics weren't so lopsided he wouldn't have been offered it.

For his sake hopefully Colon cut a good him a good enough deal to get a foot on the bottom wrung of the Sydney property ladder.

Going back a bit but Ethan Hughes.
Hughes I'd have in a different category (Like Stanley, but successful). He was still playing in Bunbury the year he turned 19 I think, he was never part of the system. Then got drafted off the back of 1 year of ressies the next year (including 36 touches off half back in the last game and breaking into the Swannies league team for finals).

Whereas with Humphries and Carr they where in / have been the in the system a few years.

McDonald's injury history is crazy bad

It is.

2,15,20,25,12,7,3,2,0,1
11,12,22,18,22,0,1,1,4,0

I've removed the first three years off one of McDonald/Hamling's season game totals. It's just the last game that makes it obvious who is who.

Hamling is on 91 total, McDonald on 87 total. Just that Oscar is three years younger.

We shifted sideways with that spot.

Think it looks worse if you include vfl/wafl stats

McDonald did have a good run at vfl level right before we took him though

Hughes was a hockey player until his late teens.

You’re right it’s a different category in a way but the point is it does happen. I’m sure you could find one or two more if you looked hard enough.

Ultimately it isn’t performances at state league level that get players drafted. Sure the best younger players at state league level might be good players at that level but they also have attributes that appeal to AFL recruiters. Some others dominate state leagues for years and go undrafted. Others are just okay players at state league but end up drafted and are okay players at AFL too. It is not a perfect correlation.

Honestly think it’s pretty obvious that McDonald is gone end of next year tbh. I doubt it would’ve been any different with Hamling.

I can see where you’re coming from though. I doubt the club lost one minute of sleep when Hamling walked - McDonald’s injury happened later and Draper proved to actually be bloody good, possibly the best under 20 KPD in the AFL.

I agree with all of this. I just still think the Carr situation is unusual in that players getting drafted off a reasonably long period of not commanding a league spot is much less common than guys getting plucked on showing draftable attributes for a short period, even if it's in seconds.
I.e. There will be a lot more examples of Hughes than Humphries. Once you've missed more than 2 consecutive drafts you've got to be showing something (and I agree that doesn't mean getting 30 touches running one way on ball every week; but if you're already 20 it's gotta be in the 1s!)

From what I've seen, Jaren has comparable rawness to Conrad Williams. Like compared to his u18 year, this is probably him "bulked up" and he's still quite slender. I'd definitely rather Conrad have had his first 2 years in the system be btwn now and 22 than 18 and 20: at his build he basically stood no chance, especially with the injury interruptions. But many who watch Conrad have said that he has the talent, but the body is 2 years away from being 2 years away.

Hopefully with Jaren it's a similar situation where the talent is obvious but the body was a couple years behind, and now we're getting him at the right time. Both quite lanky which exacerbates their sleightness. Mind you, quite strange that Jaren has struggled to this extend with that aspect, having a father in the system and being part of the NGA.

Just listened to a Podcast where Jared was speaking after his first two league games. He said his first year of colts (underage) was part of Fremantle City and he didn’t play a game that season because he was part of the rookie development group. He described himself as very slight/slim needing to develop his body. He then stepped up to South Fremantle colts early the next season. So is a late developer so to speak.

He mentioned being part of the Fremantle NGA under Roger Hayden and Tendai Mzungu. In the same squad as Motlop, Scaife, Draper etc.
