Notes on the last main training session of the year:
A milky sky, slightly overcast with a dedicated gathering of black and white clad patrons – many part of the 1892 membership group set the scene for the last main training session of the year. Some looked a bit lugubrious following a season doomed by the vicissitudes of form and blighted by ongoing injury issues. Frampton arrived just before training wearing his civvies which didn’t augur well for his selection prospects, though he emerged slightly thereafter to join training.
Eyre, reportedly a tad sore was a no show, while Checkers, Steene and Ash did a lot of running on the outers side of the arena.
Harrison and JDG were expected absentees:
For the record here is the final roll call according to who’s bedecked in the tops of polarity.
Blacks:
McStay
Maynard
Sidey
Josh
Lippa
Hill
Moore
Pendles
Schultz
Nick
Howe
Allan
Beau
Jamie
Dean
Noble
Parker
Whites:
Sullivan
Kreuger

Ryan
Johnson

The whites and blacks cleaved to indulge in their customary routines with blacks completing their warm-ups on the apparatus laid out on the turf, while the whites partook of some close-in handball and kicking drills. As per usual both groups then swapped activities.

Then the whole cohort divided into multiple groups where they focussed on different skills.

There were plenty of rehydration breaks. Following each there was much ululating as they ran back onto the main part of the oval. It appeared to be a tactic designed to buoy the spirits given the reduced incentive to have an upbeat disposition given the realistic proposition that finals are out of the equation.

Players remained vocal throughout the session and the healthy sprinkling of watchers reminded them that the fans are always invested in the cause.

There was a sprinting drill with some staggered starts and most appear to be still covering the ground well late in the season.

The whole ground ball movement drill was quite high octane in execution and the skills on display were generally crisp and precise.

There was a rather truncated full ground match simulation, followed by three teams competing in rotation in the elongated set-up whereby they used the middle part of the arena, wing to wing. One team wore black and they played against the yellow and green vested outfits.

There were some interesting match-ups with Allan opposed to Long, Richards competing against Parker, Crisp battling it out with Pendles, Kreuger rotating between Dean and Moore and he took a big juggling mark against the former.
Thereafter there were some desultory groups focussing on individual skills such as goalkicking, while the rucks and mids undertook some centre square work.

Random observations of players:
Allan certainly looks ripe for promotion. He must have received this memo as he had a discernible pep in his step and moved and kicked well to position, gathering quite a lot of the ball during his team’s rotation through the match simulation.

Elliott wearing Nick’s number, so doing justice to its brilliant owner as he moved with speed, peppered the goals and marked strongly. Apart from his vascular issue his body stood up well and for someone who’s a bit of a battering ram at times, he appears to be in good shape late in the season.

Dean – there appears to be evidence that he may replace Frampton in the team and he approached the session with vim and vigour being strongly involved during the match-play. After some promising VFL form it will great if this translates to the higher level.

Parker – while lacking a bit of toe, has neat skills and some footy nous. He can stick with his opponents. It will be interesting to see if he can find another gear after a pre-season.

Smit – is an impressive specimen whose movement seems to belie his bulk and he was kicking the ball well when having shots at goal.

Beau – a couple of times he cut a swathe through the congestion with menacing speed and power and one wonders if he has a big uninterrupted summer, if he can spend more time in the midfield

Ryan – his recent VFL has shown some glimmers of hope and he got quite a bit of the ball during match simulation today, taking some good overhead grabs and kicking the ball with precision.

IQ – looked energetic out there and was running at full pace. Has he received a rocket or is his body allowing his work to resemble the form equating with his apogee? Maybe the wing will be a boon for his confidence and provide him with greater freedom to express his skills.

WHE – lived up to his Swiss Army Knife sobriquet, playing in a few positions but he caught the eye up forward where he kicked one of his trademark goals where there’s a contest with both players battling each other chasing a loose ball. He was powerful overhead too.

Moore – if not mistaken, a berth on Friday will mark the first time he’s played every game of the year which is perhaps ironic given some body challenges in the embryonic stages of his career. Is moving well, outsprinting the smaller types and taking a few good grabs. His indifferent form at times may be related to an unfamiliar role as more the negative stopper than rebounding and intercepting free ranger.

Howe – seems to rewound the clock over the past six weeks as he’s currently moving with alacrity and disposing the ball with accuracy and strategic nous.

Training - Round 24. Main session

Final session of the week. A bit bittersweet. It's not where we wished to be, but that's footy. Not everything goes your way.

It was pretty light. I'd say it went for an hour, that was a few drills. Warm up and fundamental drills, then some match simulation type stuff.
For the last time this season (I didnt say to say "year" as pre-season will start in mid november)

Team Black:

  • Lippa
  • Maynard
  • Elliott
  • JDaicos
  • Schultz
  • Noble
  • Pendles
  • Mctay
  • DC
  • Allan
  • Sidey
  • Hill
  • Moore
  • Beau
  • WHE
  • NDaicos
  • Howe
  • Dean
  • Parker

Team White

  • IQ
  • DeMattia
  • Kreuger
  • Frampton
  • Macrae
  • TJ
  • Smit
  • Ryan
  • Crisp
  • Reef
  • Bytel
  • Richards
  • Sullivan
  • Markov
  • Long
  • Cox

With No mcstay and Pendles unlikely to play, 17 from black team will play, 6 from the white team

  • Dean played in defence with Moore, Howe, Noble, Parker, Josh D
  • Frampton was on the other side in defence
  • Reef was back up forward for the white team, along with Kreuger, Richards, Fin, DeMattia

When doing match sim was split into two parts. First part blacks v white, but then, they split into three groups (blacks, white, Green vests) so it was hard to say what was going on, as it wasnt A v B

Johnson was back on the track following his concussion. Did some running, but he was also was behind the lens of the social media camera.
Steene was the only other rehab player out there, continued his running session as he builds up for a big off season and pre-season.

During the limited match sim where split into groups, they trialled a number of players in the middle including ryan.

There was no Josh Eyre this morning. I think he is a bit sore, following the game on the weekend. No need to push him given the vfl season is finished.

They then did their own thing post match sim before slowly making their way to the fans, and then inside.

Thats it for another season. Its been one for ups and downs, but happy to bring you the ins and outs of training this year. Even when its freezing cold at 9am. Or hot in the summer.

We'll be back come november.

Thanks Jen for keeping us all informed and we are lucky to have someone like you who can fit training into your schedule so regularly.

Why is Pendles not likely to play?
Broken ribs, and still battling the bicep issue. Fly mentioned likely he would be rested; and HS and 7news mentioning he is unlikely. No need to risk him in a dead rubber.

this is encouraging as long as it continues through the summer & hopefully 1 or 2 emerge next year to compete with the 'usual suspects' and expand the potential go-to midfield crew

more importantly, thanks for all your efforts Jen, you truly are a gem and one passionate & committed Pie
