If the offseason goes as rumours are suggesting I'd be surprised if we had a first to spend on a small forward in the draft.
No rumour on the timing of Warner, just that he wants to come home. If our picks are trash this season, there is less incentive for Sydney to facilitate a trade.

Whoever gets this kid will be in for a treat

Yes, if we can't trade for Warner in be happy to use two of our three or next year's first with one of this year's firsts to move down the order to draft him.

He's a big bodied, hard at it with great skills mid who isn't from Vic.

I think Adelaide would be in the right spot for him so might be hard to get.

Wouldn't call him big bodied at 180 cm tall. We should only be picking him to play as a small forward, but he considers himself a mid and that is really not a need for our team.

He plays big as he is strong in the contest

Not tall

Yeah, its the frame with the speed that is probably the best part of him. You can see he'll be insanely strong with an AFL body. I'd be all for him if we think he can do what Warner is doing - play forward and midfield. Also agree it's hard to see Adelaide passing on him given the zip he'd add to their midfield

Wouldnt fancy the pressure of being the Adelaide head recruiter this year making the final call on the draft.
They are getting ANGRY over there. No more Fischer Mcasey or Jordan Gallucci style busts will be tolerated this time round.

I would be angry too.
Our recruiting team has been very good for the last 10 or so years.

As noobermensch has pointed out, one of the downsides of Draper's games so far this championships that is not apparent in those highlights is that he has pretty much been uninterested in doing defensive stuff. Contrast that with someone like Christian Moraes (who arguably is around the same part of the draft) who laid some really good tackles in his game; IMO it is "small" stuff like that will differentiate players when push comes to shove.

I'd imagine that's a fairly big downside in the modern game too.
The top level players probably get away with it, but even to start breaking into an AFL midfield as a young player you'd need to be contributing on the defensive side.

Ultimately I guess it also depends on how 'coachable' he might be to develop that side of his game.
Draper's body language to demand the ball doesn't scream team first sort of player either, although acknowledging that's a very shallow judgement.

Freo are after small forwards right? This kid could fall around your first pick

----

A solid first Champs outing for Joe Berry who show cased the exiting and damaging package of skills he brings to a forward line. Started strongly in the first half, regularly leading up to the wings to get involved. Was quieter in the second but made the most of his opportunities to snag a couple of crucial goals and finish with three for the game.

I've watched a few of the Berry videos, and I can't quite get the hype. He seems a natural forward with a knack for kicking goals, so in that regard I could understand if we pick him. However, I would be worried he doesn't have the X-factor traits that will light up the forward line and make defenders nervous at AFL level. He reminds me of Jack Billings.

I like Jacob Newton as more of a mid draft option. 178cm forward/mid from SA. He’s had a good season so far, kicking goals at the Champs. He’s got good strength for his size, does the defensive stuff.

I doubt we use an early pick on a small forward unless they’re truly elite. More likely to go the Carlton way of a good team making okay smalls look better than they are.

Ned Bowman from SA could be of interest too. High flying 186cm forward. Has the attributes to see him be drafted top 25, just needs the consistent performances now.

Chris if we keep our first 3 picks, who are you taking?

I’d say there’s zero chance of that happening. I doubt we use more than one at most.

But probably Taj Hotton if he slipped to us due to injury, Christian Moraes if he was available - both in that mid/forward mould like Cooper Simpson. Otherwise I like Xavier Lindsay with his left foot on a wing, also Tobie Travaglia and Angus Clarke as half backs.

9. Taj Hotton

Sandringham Dragons/Vic Metro

A big improver this year, Hotton had some monster games in the early part of the season playing a variety of roles. He took his endurance to another level over the off-season, opening the door for more midfield minutes after spending most of last year across half-forward. The son of former Carlton and Collingwood player Trent, Hotton is dangerous and creative when in the forward half and averaged 28.7 disposals and 1.7 goals from his first three Coates Talent League games this year. Those performances saw him included as an injury replacement player for the AFL Academy’s first exhibition match against Coburg in April, where he again impressed with 18 disposals and two goals. Hotton will miss the rest of the year after rupturing his ACL at training in May, but he is still expected to be a high draft pick in November.

6. Christian Moraes

Eastern Ranges/Vic Metro

A dynamic 183cm midfielder, Moraes is a running machine who covers the ground extremely well. He works hard both sides of the ball and can be dangerous around goals when he pushes forward, evidenced by his nine goals from his first three games for the Ranges this year. In the thick of the action, Moraes is tough, has clean hands and brings real composure. He had an up-and-down few weeks after copping a heavy knock during an AFL Academy game in April, but has still averaged 25.7 disposals, 5.3 marks, four clearances and 7.5 score involvements across six Coates Talent League games this year

24. Xavier Lindsay

Gippsland Power/Vic Country

Lindsay has led the way for the Gippsland Power this season and has had significant impact forward of centre, averaging 26 disposals, seven score involvements and seven clearances per game. The Power midfielder enjoys getting his hands dirty and has a burst of speed from congestion that hurts opposition sides.

25. Tobie Travaglia

Bendigo Pioneers/Vic Country

Travaglia has had a superb start to the year for the Pioneers, earning him a call-up to the AFL Academy side. The speedster impressed with 15 disposals and four marks across halfback, and he has averaged 25 disposals, five marks and five tackles as a midfielder in the Talent League. He has gamebreaking qualities and his stocks will only rise if he can put together a strong national carnival.

15. Joe Berry

Murray Bushrangers/Vic Country

An early-season bolter, 180cm forward Berry has certainly had an impact for the Bushrangers in the first half of the Coates Talent League season. The left-footer possesses blistering high-end speed, brings great creativity around goal, has one-touch hands at ground level and works hard up the ground to find the footy. Berry has kicked four goals on four separate occasions for the Bushrangers this year and sits as the leading goalkicker in the Coates Talent League, outside of mid-season draftee Will McLachlan.

21. Isaac Kako

Calder/Cannons

Kako is one of the most enjoyable prospects to watch in the draft pool. He is dangerous around goal, has speed to burn and can fly high for a mark. His goalkicking has let him down this year, kicking 14.21 for the season, but he has had plenty of forward-half impact, averaging 18 disposals and eight score involvements this season. Kako is part of Essendon’s Next Generation Academy and is of Iraqi descent.

How about Sam Lalor?
