With Foxtel getting exclusive rights to Saturday's broadcast I wonder if the AFL will try and drive subscriptions by playing certain teams on Saturdays? Particularly the states that get their home teams fta every week.

I think the Saturdays exclusive to Fox is only for the first 8 rounds.

Our double ups in 2024

Melbourne (4th in 2023/14th in 2024)
St Kilda (7th in 2023/12th in 2024)
Essendon (11th in 2023/11th in 2024)
Fremantle (14th in 2023/10th in 2024)
Gold Coast (15th in 2023/13th in 2024)
North Melbourne (17th in 2023/17th in 2024)

Based on 2023 positions
• 1 from the top 6 (Melbourne)
• 2 from the middle 6 (Saints, Essendon)
• 3 from the bottom 6 (Freo, Suns, North)

All sides missed the finals in 2024 so we can’t complain about how our double ups went (4 of our 5 wins came against these sides - the other win was Richmond)

I don’t think we’ll double up against North this year as my guess is the unspoken part of their WA games deal is they don’t play an away game here

Based on the above, my tip for our doubles will be :

• 1 from the top 6 - Hawthorn (which will include a trip to Tassie)
• 2 from the middle 6 - Bulldogs, Fremantle
• 3 from the bottom 6 - Suns, Adelaide, Richmond

We play Carlton at Adelaide Oval in the early Saturday spot - 12.50pm SA time (11.20am WA time)

Surprised we got a game at Adelaide Oval - Bulldogs v Brisbane is being played at Norwood the same day

Carlton have a WAFL side now?

Nobody liked Opening Round but that hasn’t stopped the AFL from doing it again

Collingwood and Geelong make return appearances whilst Hawthorn and Essendon replace Carlton and Richmond who will play the “traditional” Thursday night R1 match

Let’s hope the AFL learn from last year and don’t schedule a R1 match between a side from opening round against a team who didn’t play that week

Ah ****, who am I kidding of course they’ll match sides with completely different preparations against each other

I would've thought Freo v Carlton and us v Richmond would've made more sense.
Must be something we have with having us play at adelaide over every second year, rotating with Freo.

West coast vs Richmond bottom 2 battle at adelaide oval probably isnt the drawcard worth taking up the bigger stadium for.

Collingwood and Geelong make return appearances

Didn’t the Pies want no part in round 0?

If not, sounds like Pies might have to understand they don’t run the AFL,

I am not sure this will create complaints in the future as these 8 clubs will have a bye week meaning better rest for the olayers

Another "Opening Round" confirmed. Appears it will become a mainstay of the fixture now in the hope that the QLD and NSW fans can finally be rewarded for their years of steadfast patronage. And with the myriad of marquee matches in Victoria and Gather Round in SA, all the fans of the competition will be taken care of fairly.

Opening round, yuck.
Just another WTF AFL idea that not many like and doesn't make any sense except for squeezing in an extra weekend of footy for media satisfaction.
Either start the season a week earlier for everyone or don't.

Northern states - Opening Round
South Australia - Gather Round
Victoria - Thursday night R1, Good Friday, Easter Monday, ANZAC Eve, ANZAC Day, Dreamtime at the G, Kings Birthday, Grand Final in perpetuity

Western Australia - North Melbourne B2B away games (one of which will be in Bunbury)

Welcome to the AFL
