For me, the next big LM challenge is when Charlie and Harry approach retirement. Next year they are in the 27 year old group. At what point, when, do we start to draft some KPFs to develop? 2026? 2027?

It's a tough balancing act.

If the plan is to try and draft one in the first round, you want to do it at a time when you could be confident of having a senior spot for them within 2-3 years. If you go too early on them and they can't see a pathway to selection, then you can guarantee their manager would be testing the market early.

I think we'll give Lemmey another couple of seasons to see if we can turn him into an AFL player, and O'Farrell as a late pick and boyhood Blues fan with the family connection will probably be happy to do a 3-4 year apprenticeship if needed. O'Keeffe would have to be getting close to the point where he could be selected as injury cover for a forward or ruck spot. Then I'd like to see us take McMahon to replace Durdin as our depth KPP, but at 22yo he actually has scope to become a best 22 option within a couple of years.

With all that considered, I reckon we'll hold off til post-Cody Walker's draft and then make a play for a KPF at the top end of the draft.

Starting Defensive Talls - Weitering, Haynes, Gov, maybe JSOS?
Developing/Depth Defensive Talls - Young, McMahon, O'Farrell

Starting Forward Talls - McKay, Curnow, Kemp
Developing/Depth Forward Talls - McMahon, Lemmey, O'Keeffe

Starting Ruck - TDK
Depth/Developing Ruck - Pittonet, O'Keeffe

There's also Duffy coming on board this year as Cat B - he'll take a few years at best to get going, but at 194cm he's in the ballpark as a second tall option.

Matt carols girlfriend is my employee- told me his been offered a guaranteed list spot if he can stay injury free, didn’t play one game last year due to injury but club willing to give Carroll the spot if he can get through a Rob Innes pre season.

Club rate him heavily and see him and Billy Wilson as the doch and Newman replacements off HB. Other spot between Durdin DGB and McMahon (likely McMahon).

Club willinuse 1 pick at the rookie today(likely a small forward) leaving two spots for train ons.

This seems like what I would expect.

Well done to the LMT, quality adds to the midfield, wing/half back and a Key Defender

I am concerned about our forwards

I suspect the next couple of years these areas will need a focus primarily via Free Agency and Trading

Here is my perceived depth charts for these roles:

Small Forwards
: Durdin (injured, can’t stay on park), Motlop (inconsistent), Fantasia (inconsistent and below average)
High Half Forward: E Hollands (harsh maybe, good start to year, laconic maybe?) , Docherty (31 and not sure if it’s his role), Smith (will play in middle very quickly), Lucas C (?? he has a good left leg, endurance, a connector, an option but hbf/win more likely long term?)
Defensive Half Forward: Cottrell (injuries), Fogarty (injuries), Ben C (??, he has good endurance, he is a bull, defensive traits, long term midfield but could be an option?)
Third Tall: Silvagni (can play this role and ruck but ACL and maybe play defense) Kemp (is he back or forward) Williams (tweener and ???), Moir (promising but can he get fit enough)
Key Forwards: Charlie, Harry, Lemmey (hasn’t shown much and getting tried down back)

Gee am I being too harsh? there is a lot of Orange (uncertain - last chance) above

Are you concerned with the depth like me Jimmae?
Or are you concerned that we have no recognised Above Average Small Forwards?

Can’t wait to see Big Bad Billy Wilson have his day streaming through half back.

Reminds me of Andy McKay.

Good with the footy, sound with animals.

I'm not concerned because we have the option of the mids rotating through, and challenging Motlop to get fitter and faster.

This was not a draft where we could address our small forward issues unless we got in the range of Hotton or were prepared to give up the SSP scheme we setup for ourselves, and it seems one or both of Richmond and us weren't entertaining a trade involving pick 3.

I think I've made it clear enough I have different ideas for the list, tactics, and list strategy over time. If Williams is fit, we've got the beginnings of a plan for 2025.

Sounds like your banking on McInness like me to be one of our key recruits for Season 2025 - needs to fix C Durdin, Fogarty, Silvagni and Cottrell and get Williams, Moir and Motlop fit

Both have at least 6 years left but yes we do need to start planning but what will the game look like then, might be hybrid half forwards and small forwards who knows.
