If you're short of points, they take them off the future pick in the round that the bid is made.
But you get a maximum of points from them assuming that you won the flag, so the max deficit is pick 18, ie 836 points

In the extreme scenario:

Say we win the flag (natural pick 18), trade out our first rounder in 2026 and Walker goes pick 1. (3,000 points in deficit).

Could we just take the deficit and pay it off with whatever our first in 2027 is?

We'd need to match 2700 points (3000 - 10%), with a deficit of 836 points allowed.
So if we weren't holding 1864 points in the 2026 draft, we would not be allowed to match the bid. Our chances of getting those points without using our 1st rounder is negligible.

Wonder if, when we move to trading picks 2 years in advance, same will happen with deficit? That would be a good way to address this. i.e. allow deficit to be incurred over 2 years in same round.

Yeah, I'm just surmising this might be something that happens - haven't heard anything about it. Think it would make sense - it shouldn't be impossible to do a deal like the above, just hard.

Maybe. I don’t think it will be this year unfortunately. I think we will get a F2 from the Hawks as it will be a 3 way trade involving Barrass. Maybe a 4 club trade that also includes Richmond, so you maybe right. Could be Richmond’s mid 20s pick but feel it will be the Hawks F2
