A number of people pushing for Phillips and fair enough. Looks exactly what we need

The question still for me is we offered Durdin Carroll and DBG train on spots and not Phillips I know we can still pick him but seems down the order?

Iā€™ll be very interested how this plays out. Talk internally is that Durdin is still preference if he gets through. Phillips in VFL may be back up come mid season if he breaks down?

Iā€™m honestly not sure our thinking
I nearly mentioned that in my last post.

My take (and I don't know squat) is I suspect that they have secured Phillips for the VFL side to stop other clubs swooping in (a'la Pies with Markov) but they still want to give Durdin (and Carroll) all the opportunities they can, because they are well respected in the Carlton walls.

I have no doubt Phillips will be elevated at some point this season.

If we don't take the likes of Phillips as a SSP, and he doesn't get picked up by another club, he goes in a general pool in the mid season draft

He should be given another chance but no one was interested after delisted which concerns me. Could we pick two KPD? Probably not

Durdin looked very good on Friday and played KPD. The club see him as perfect Weitering back up

SOS will also play there and we have Weitering, Young, Haynes, McGovern as tall defender options

There is a long way to go before we select anyone

My gut feel (and like you I donā€™t know) is we will pick Durdin if he stays fit and have Phillips in 2s as option for later if needed

The thing I dont get with the Phillips VFL signing, is how we play so many tall defenders in the reserves.

Assuming we play Weitering, Haynes, Gov in the 1s, that leaves Young, SOS, Durdin/DGB, HOF in the 2s. Already to tall and then you add Phillips. Even with 1 or 2 injuries its unbalanced.

Makes me think the vfl signing is more a play to get him part of our program so we can look at him for spp. But then we gave train on spots to 2 kpd ahead of him, so that doesnt 100% add up.

Have Durdin or DGB agreed to VFL if they donā€™t get a senior spot?

I reckon it'll either be Durdin or DGB - not both, and no matter which one is selected, one of either Young/Phillips/Durdin/DGB will be in the regular 22. Young was in good form at the end of this year and gives us another Ruck option so i suspect he'll get first crack.

Will be in my Best 23 if he does!!

Big call. He is a 25 year old with one AFL game and delisted after one season. Iā€™m told Saints and another club spoke with him and said No.

We are a probable Top 4 side with Weitering, McGovern, Haynes, Young, Silvagni maybe Durdin also fighting to effectively 3 spots.
Iā€™m not including HOF as he needs size yet

What do you see that makes him best 23?

It does seen top heavy, but with Phillps already signed to the VFL, it would only be an issue if we sign one of Durdin or DGB

Spine of

Phillips
Young
HOK (Ruck)
Lemmey
FF???

Jack will probably start as a 3rd tall and we still have O'Farrell to squeeze in

So how does that work if he's signed to our VFL side? I'm assuming he'd have to nominate to go into a pool?

If he doesn't get picked up, he goes into an open pool mid season

Phillips VFL, at this stage

Then maybe 1 of Durdin or DGB

HOK as ruck surely? O'Farrell as 3rd tall defender... SOS 4th...

No idea. Im assuming we pick one or the other for SPP in that scenario.
For some perspective, I am almost certain early doors as things were playing out for SSP prospects, I saw a report or article that Phillips was to train with West Coast seeking an SSP spot. Therefore unavailable at the time for us. Carroll and Durdin were confirmed early as being given the chance to prove their fitness and/or durability. DGB at that stage was being spoke of as a chance, but not yet confirmed as a candidate. Took a while for McMahon to be confirmed too.

Perhaps the Eagles shot fell through for Phillips and he has taken a punt on committing to our reserves to give him a shot at our legitimate KPD ā€œvacancyā€. The $1000 per week two per vacancy SSP so itā€™s were spoken for. By committing to our VFL program he gives himself the opportunity to audition and possibly has some backing from our coterie types. Letā€™s not forget Will White from our VFL has also been reported as having the opportunity to audition for a vacancy.

There is no rule dictating we take one of the train ons or the VFL listed (new and old)players. Until we commit to two players, we can add any nominated draft candidate or delisted (former) AFL player.

Thats been my suspicion too. I dont think his signing makes sense for him or us if the aim is purely to play VFL. Reckon SPP is definately possible. If you read his interview with the HS he seems to think so too though where he actually sits in the pecking order is anyones guess.

Yep, pretty top heavy.
I'd say that there's a reasonable chance that JSOS stays forward with Durdin &/or DGB not being picked picked up, it would provide better balance.

Yeah, I reckon it's all a bit weird....there must be some strategy behind it that'll be revealed in time, but ****ed if I can work it out.

We've signed Phillips to the VFL, but if we take DGB or Nigel as an SSP - as you say, we'll be ridiculously top heavy down back in the VFL. If we have Nigel/DGB, Young, SOS and HO'F down back (who we have to play if they are fit), then you could see Phillips being squeezed out the side.

Which begs the question: why did he sign with our VFL side if there wasn't some type of commitment given?

I donā€™t buy that any deals or promises have been done. We have two spots available and at least one will be a KPD which we need.

There was no one obvious for us to give a spot so we have given Phillips Durdin DGB a crack at the spot and a pre season to prove themselves. IMO itā€™s really that simple

As for VFL if you have a fit list you then have multiple players filling certain spots. Itā€™s call depth. The issue is how many are fit each week?

We also have Carroll White trialling over the pre season and theoretically we can pick a player from anywhere if they have nominated

Itā€™s also possible we only fill one spot and leave one for the mid season

There is 4-6 weeks left and a lot can happen yet. IMO I donā€™t believe the club knows what it will do yet
