What they say about Durds and DGB Soapy?

Durdin believes he has answer to injury issues so gave him a chance as he fills a role we need filling and he is very liked internally

DGB a bit the same. Has talent and still young

I was told we need for one of these players (KPD) on our list but all have issues and they wasn’t anyone obvious we could recruit.

Giving them a pre season to prove themselves. Nothing more than that

I don’t know anyone’s source or history just passing on what I was told. Made clear to me it is an “opportunity” to get a spot with no guarantees

I asked because I was interested to hear theory behind Durdin getting a go and thoughts about DGB

Time will tell
Just look in the no discussion thread soapy. Some of his hits were
We’re getting sdk 5 mill over 6 years
Now we have to first will target Bailey smith
Now we have pick 3 Trac is a chance

It’s the internet. I take it all with a grain of salt.

I just pass on what I’m told and that can change and be wrong

All I will say is everyone has a right to their own opinion and I won’t criticise it

He’s taller than all of them. Is 198 cms according to the interwebs. He’s definitely not the best kick. And he’s not a guy you would centre your forward line around. But at a pinch he can play a role up forward if we’re short our twins.

I like Will White as well. And would give him a crack before a DGB (if we’re looking at filling the second rookie spot).

Good teams look at what players can do and build around that, not focusing on their weaknesses

The key thing with McMahon is that he ticks the scoreboard over. He kicked at least two goals in every VFL match he played this year - that's Charlie Curnow level of consistency.

If one of the big boys is out, and we just want someone to go in and keep the scoreboard ticking over while the other big guy gets up the ground and becomes the mobile target, McMahon fits that bill perfectly. He can sit close to goal, at his height requires defender attention, snag a couple of sausages at some point, and play a passable role as a backup.

It's a bit like how Mason Cox has operated for Collingwood tbh. He's an utterly ordinary player with very clear deficiencies (aka pretty much all football skills). But he's bloody big, and every game he clunks a couple of big marks in contested situations that would otherwise be easily defended, and weirdly, this becomes more dangerous in big matches and at the end of close games (where teams have well organised defences).

If McMahon never plays, then he just gives our VFL team a good target. If Harry or Charlie get injured, he's a good tool to have in the shed. Makes sense to me

Every year ( for the last 30 ) we end up disappointed and then as the new year approaches we find optimism
And… thus year is no different, or is it?

It feels different…

1- We’ve moved on our perennially injured mob which creates more depth
2- We’ve refreshed our midfield with incoming youth
3- We have hired a new fitness boss (Massive Optimism right here folks)
4- We have gotten hold of another
possible Generational Talent -Jagga

So I’ve found new energy for next year after another head shaking end to this one

All I want is a fit list throughout the year and a decent bout of luck with injuries then I reckon we could be a BIG chance

Go u baggers

Not sure that either Lemmey or McMahon will reach AFL level, but comparing their performances in VFL games last year, it was McMahon, not Lemmey, who was somewhat effective as a key-position forward. At least McMahon could take contested marks up forward and kick goals from them.

I know he's young, but I can't remember ever seeing Lemmey doing that against an opponent of similar size which I think is pretty important for a key forward.

If the club does decide to commit to Lemmey, they would be seeing something in him that is not so noticeable from his VFL performances. Whichever way it goes, I'm sure the club will make the right decision.
With Lemmey, I remember his workrate up the ground being his POD in his draft year.

It’s Lemmey’s lack of mongrel and competitiveness that worries me. Has some natural ability and athleticism but if he doesn’t improve effort he is done

My concern is he is like Young when it comes to competitiveness. Hope he can improve this

I don’t think McMahon will be a star but he will give you effort and play a role
Needs more "this ball is mine, get the hell outta my way" and less "I'll jump at it and hope for the best".

Did any small forwards go undrafted, that we may be interested in and can we pick them up now? Not clear on difference between rookies and SSPs

I recognise that Matt Owies didn’t really play small forward in the traditional sense, more as a leading small forward but 1 to 2 goals from him will be missed and we need some small forwards to actually be effective

isn't that what we are doing with Durdin and Motlop again?

If Motlop and Durdin can stay fit, they will be good enough. The talent is there.
For comparison with Owies, he was a year older than Durds is now when he played his first game.

My guess is that because we had already signed him last year (and then just didn’t officially list him after he did his knee), the club/media department hasn’t felt the need to announce that he has now been officially added to the list.

Both the AFL website and The Age have said he’s listed now.

Duffy was one of two Irish recruits that the Blues lured to Australia back in August, but ruptured his ACL playing for Gaelic side Dromard last month and has remained in his homeland to begin his rehab.

He subsequently hasn't been listed at Carlton for next season, though there is a commitment for the teenager to return to the Blues midway through next year ahead of officially joining the club in 2025.

Yeah, that’s my point. We had signed him, we just didn’t add him to the list.

It’s just an observation and certainly nothing personal. I hope he makes it but from what I’ve seen I doubt he can be an effective small forward on a premiership contending team. He looks like a small midfielder to me who might be ok as a pressure high half forward but I don’t think we need him to play that role.

My original point was we are very weak in the small forward department - possibly bottom four in the league - and it’s an area we have been poor for a number of years. We need Williams, Motlop, Durdin and Fogarty to play well above any level they have played in their career to get where we want to get to.

Ins and Outs

Trying to use like for like where possible:

Kennedy > Jagga
Marchbank > Haynes
J. Carroll > B. Camporeale
Cuningham > L. Camporeale
Mirkov > O'Farrell
Owies > Charleson
Akeui > Duffy
Martin > Lord

S. Durdin > ?
M. Carroll > ?

Feels like a redistribution of player types on the list.

Forwards out, Defenders in.

Even accounting for Kemp and Williams switching forward it feels like we re-balanced player types a bit

Are Ison, Gresham and Clark all NGA possibilities for 2025? If so, and if we take any, where would they go in terms of draft placing, and what could they possibly cost in terms of draft picks?
A few outside chances for Father/Sons as well.

I believe Harvey Allan, Charlie Beaumont, Harry Dean, Archer Hogg are all draft age next year. No idea how any progressing but Allan was on the Sandy Dragons list this year.

Not really, both Durdin and Motlop are still very young. Granted, they haven't set the world on fire, Mots wasn't bad in 2023.

We haven't really been doing the same thing over and over. End of 2023 we picked up Fanta, 2021 we drafted Mots, 2020 we drafted Durdin... we've actually been trying to improve that area for many years now...

This year, there's no way we were drafting Berry with pick 3... pick 40 had we not drafted a KPD, we would have got somebody else making a post similar to yours about KPDs.

As for the small forwards... I'm sure there's a few available but very unlikely to be anyone that will address our issues.

I suppose one point of difference is getting Williams training as a small forward this pre season. Another pre-season under Mots + Durds belt will help too.

Just wondering re Matt Duffy. He's listed as an In on AFL website, and now allocated #41. When will the club be posting something to acknowledge Duffy formally on the list, and do we have a Matt Duffy thread here? Wishing him all the best...

Here you go Rev

Finally it’s official 👍
