Except for 4 absolute floggings, I thought Luke Power did a sterling job with our injury riddled VFL side.
Most of our other losses were fairly close and could've gone either way.

I know I'm a broken record, but signing McMahon is a no brainer imo.

He's still only 22yo, so now approaching the age where key forwards start to mature. Proven goal kicker (2nd overall in the VFL) and won our B&F....not sure what more he needs to do to earn a spot.

Anyway, I digress. If H or Charles go down for an extended period during the season, we're in all sorts. You can start plugging holes or trying to manufacture a makeshift forward half week after week. Or throw TDK up there at the expense of our ruck, and bring Pitto in as our 1st ruck. Or throw JSOS or Kemp there as a key marking option week after week, and pray for the best.

Of course we've got Lemmey - but at the end of last year when we our arses were hanging out the seat of our pants with a huge injury toll, no key forwards, and only 27 odd players to choose from, big Lem was still kcking the dew off the grass in the VFL....which just demonstrates the MC don't have the confidence right now to give him a crack at senior level. That may change over summer, but if it doesn't, we're back to bare bones.

For mine, we desperately need another forward who can take a big grab and kick goals. Who knows, McMahon may become our Logan Morris as that 3rd tall mobile marking forward.

Out of our other train ons, I'm not convinced in the slightest with DGB, Carroll now appears to be surplus especially after today, and big Nigel can't be trusted to get onto the park. I'd be taking McMahon and leave the other spot for the mid season draft....unless the next Eddie Betts/Jeff Garlett small forward happens to fall on our laps.

100% spot on. Great points and explanations.

I just don't think Lemmey is an AFL player. Too slow and not agile. I hope I'm wrong.

2025 is make or break for him.
When you factor McMahon is only 2 years older, it's chalk and cheese in terms of output thus far.

Agree.
Lemmey kinda reminds me of Josh Schache. Had the size and aerial ability but just lacked any competitiveness.

Needs to get a bit of ā€˜daaawwgā€™ in himā€¦

(Sorryā€¦been watching too much American football)

Jeez I hope we haven't stuffed up and given white (or one of the others) a false belief they had a train-on gig. That would be cruel.
Possible White is doing some training with the afl boys as part of the vfl program and the journalist got confused.

Cincotta did alot of preseason with the afl guys the year he was picked but was never officially a train on player before getting a spot.

Assume the only difference is the money.

Anyone can still get the spot, just won't be paid $1000 per week. But if he's on the vfl list, he's probably getting paid there anyway.

I completely agree, but the stat (usless without vision) was being used as to why Lord should be playing in front of Hewett

Essentially they are the exact same type
It would be wrong to prematurely pencil Lord in, particularly ahead of Hewett. George has runs on the board. He is quite limited, doing almost all of his work around the contest while being less than optimal on the spread and assisting behind the ball.

The commitment Lord has shown is admirable and we all love a shiny new toy. On face value, he seems to offer a little more around the ground than (my perception) George, but despite his physical development, will almost certainly need another season to be able to run out games week in week out.

Opportunity and development for Jagga and indeed the Camporeales also comes in to the equation. While George has some issues due to his chronic back, he is certainly not ready to be farmed out just yet. I am optimistic Smith and Lord in particular can establish themselves rather quickly. I have a decent level of optimism with the Campos, but realistically they will need some ā€œseasoningā€. Think Ben will be groomed for a more defensive role, so likely not an early debut. The other part of the equation will be the development and use of the Hollands boys, and perhaps Binns opportunity to audition for a wing spot ahead of Lucas.

The absolute beauty of our recent drafting is that we have added a host of perspective top team players while our established group are in an inarguably premiership window. The timing of player progression will be up to individuals.

Every year posters bang on about this DFA and that journeyman trade target, and thankfully since Acres judicious trade, we have only added draftees and youngsters like Elijah. We are currently weighing up a couple of SSP prospects to fill our last two spots with a mind to shoring up some key position depth. Other than OUR journeyman Sam Durdin being considered for a reprieve (on medical/durability grounds), the candidates are 22yo and younger. We have moved on from the stop gap types, the insurance depth, and are targeting long term players. No more ā€œwastedā€ picks, every pick dedicated to the future. Unless there are extenuating circumstance, no more rejects from other clubs (although tight lists have shaken out the odd deserving player, particularly for a shot at this yearā€™s ā€œsuper draftā€)

Nothing personal, as I have plenty of respect for ā€œNigelā€ Durdin, but surely he only gets a gig if something happens to Weiters or Young during the pre season. Realistically Young is next in line and we have Kemp and Silvagni likely to offer back up (if indeed Kemp is permanently redeployed)

If they can take Hewett's place, great, but he isn't going to give it up easy.

Challenge is for the kids to earn it.

In the meantime, we know what we will get out of George

While I like traits of certain types, I don't have favourites nor do I dislike a player

Where we are as a side, age should never be a consideration in selection. Pick players on output first and foremost

Agree theyre very similar. Lord maybe a more penetrating kick. Hewett has alot more runs on the board obviously.

I dont think you could use any stats to justify Lord over Hewett. If Lord gets Hewetts spot it will be based on what he shows over preseason, not those games at the end of last year.

I'd love Lord to take the spot, but if you were picking today one or the other it'd have to be Hewett. Time will tell.

I donā€™t care who has the spot, Hewett, Lord or even Ben

What I do believe though, Hewett and Lord could coexist, if other players are playing more outside, such as Walsh and Cerra

True. George is a bloody good player. What is great is for the first time in a long time we have talent coming through that could challenge him for a spot or takeover.

"IF" some of Lord, Ben Camporeale, Wilson, Smith, Elijah, Docherty (fit again) Cincotta, Durdin can step up and really put pressure on Cerra & Hewett (Cripps Walsh are locks) for their spots then we will be such a better side

Whats he meant to be showing? He's had plenty of good/decent games in the VFL in a team that got flogged all year. He's obviously not going to get games ahead of Curnow or Mckay, I see no issue with him developing in the VFL until they're done if he's continually improving.

Heā€™s supposed to be showing that he is AFL quality, he has 29 goals from 33 games, so far thatā€™s not setting the world on fire.
We have seen with McMahon that there is state league players who are well ahead of him in terms of output, so he needs a big season to ensure he gets another contract.

He went 12 goals in his first year and 17 in his second which is improving year on year to date, but neither are good numbers.

Im not sure why people get defensive, list spots are tight, players get delisted, he needs to perform to hold his spot, if he can have a break out year and get a new deal, good on him.

Not sure there is going to be immediate spot for Hewitt in best 22 midfield. I now see him competing with Cerra, Lord and eventually Ben Campo for the defensive midfield spot.

My starting midfield would be Cripps, Walsh, Cerra, EHollands, Jagga

We have been crying for run and spread, hence further developing Hollands and introducing Jagga.

Would be room for a 6th midfielder as sub. The issue for Hewitt and Lord is they can only really play inside or defensive mid

I think if they can play at the level they have shown and remain relatively injury we will be fine. Williams and Fogarty both had strong contributions in the fwd line last year. Motlop and Durdin are still relatively young and have both shown glimpses.

We will also add Moir to that mix next year and should see Smith, E. Hollands and Cottrell spending time FWD.

I donā€™t agree on any aspect of that statement. I think all of Williams, Durdin, Motlop and Fogarty would have to play above any level they have already played for this line to become effective for us. Also based on their respective histories thereā€™s almost no chance any of them can stay fit and play 23 + games in a season.

Just needs a pre season and IMO could easily play early. Very calm and mature and will handle step up

The way he played later in the year on the back of little training was impressive
He had a fairly interrupted first year through illness and injury - didn't have a lot of continuity during the season.

I'd still like to see him develop into a purely outside mid to utilise his run and carry - which is why we drafted him in the first place when you listen to Austin's presser after the 2023 ND.

His game when to a new level in his U18 year for the Stingrays when they moved him from half back to the midfield in the second half of the season, and of course winning their B&F ahead of Cooper Simpson and Harry DeMattia - as well as finishing 6th in the Morrish Medal.

With an uninterrupted start to this season, I'd expect him to pushing fairly hard for a call up

Lemney still probably has time by virtue of the fact that heā€™s going to be behind Charlie and Harry on merit for at least the next 2, probably 3 years.

That said I agree he needs to show he is close to being an option because clearly at the end of last year when both were out the coaches rightly (from what Iā€™ve seen of him at least) thought he wasnā€™t playable.

If McMahon had been on the list - like he should have been taken in the MSD - then he would have played for us in those last 2 games of the season.
