Haynes is injury prone and 33 years old. Will be lucky to play 10 games. People seriously overrate players on here.
I'm not overrating Haynes, he's a very good player but the injuries and age concern me as well. If he is fit he will be a part of our best side.

Not having a crack at Haynes but he is 33 and past his best. People seem to think he is still a top line player. I also don't agree with "Modern CHB" type. It's total defence now and different roles. You have a combination of talls, mobile talls and runners

He was brought in as cheap depth. It's what we need. He will play games and be more than handy.

As I said (and ususal suspects have jumped on) I hope we go past him and have players like Jack, Durdin/Phillips McGovern Cowan Young filling the spots to support Weitering. Means we are improving and doing very well

Just my take

Those positions haven't gone, it's just the way in which they are played which has changed. Away from being less one on one to zoning. The roles of full back CHB, Flanks and pockets very much exist but have changed quite a bit. You need a big key defender and a tall defender who is mobile and athletic, in modern terms FB and CHB.

We have options, but I am not sure at all which way we will go.

I'm hopeful with Silvagni because he is a smart footballer and fairly athletic. Durdin's body is no better than Haynes historically. But he has plenty of ability. Phillips is genuinely an unknown quantity as a key defender at AFL level. McGovern is a pinch hitter as a key defender and suited to that tall pocket player brilliantly. Cowan is not a key position player and not a part of the conversation but is a good pocket/flanker. Young has been ordinary for most of his time, he has a poor football and situational brain but he can play a role as a lock down player ok. We appeared to use him better towards the end of last season which was good, he needs a really simple role. For mine young needs to add some size and strength to play fullback and release Weitering.

I'll judge us when I see it, I just aren't overly excited by our second tall defender yet. Time will tell.

The Cerra contract makes some sense. Yes it's not a good feeling signing an injury prone player up for so long however we need to take risks to win a flag so we can retain players. It's a cap saving move, it will be how we keep the list together.

Ollie Hollands for a long time at the start of the season
Cottrell, why he came back straight into the ’s was an abomination of a decision and was kept in for far too long.
Corey Durdin
Fantasia
Even Fog

That’s a couple for you to ponder

Only ones I'd agree on is Cottrell and to a lesser degree Ollie, but even then I understand why they did what they did. Ollie is far better defensively than Binns but I still believe they should have tried to make it work when Binns was in form and Ollie wasn't. Cottrell was immense in the 2023 finals series and I'd imagine they just wanted to play him into form. Didn't work out and realistically should have been dropped. However, like the others listed below, there wasn't much in the VFL to replace him due to injuries.

Fantasia and Durdin - Durdin was in and out all year, Orazio was basically only playing because our other smalls were injured.

Fogarty was never out of form, performed well all year.

Motlop was completely useless during the last 3 home games and the final. Yes we had very little alternatives…but I think we could’ve rolled the dice with Moir.

Different roles. I'm normally one of the first ones on here to critique our small forward brigade, but realistically Moir wasn't going to apply the necessary pressure to replace a small forward. He would have been coming in for Kemp if anything.

Gov gave a massive push for (Jeff) Matt Carroll in the Summer Sessions episode from my perception. When asked about who could step up for Newy, he quickly mentioned Jeff and praised his efforts after overcoming the groin setback in his first year.

I am reading him as a lock for a spot, barring a setback in the coming weeks.

It makes sense. We went through all the effort of drafting him. If he has had a good preseason may as well give him a proper go. Particularly seeing as we have 3 list spots.

in terms of our small forwards, Fogarty is the one that bemuses me. In terms of scoring (Small Forwards 1 wood) he is deficient, thus we have one less weapon in the forward line. He is there purely for the pressure he puts on. I would rather that be used on an oppo forward.

He's our best score creator. Just doesn't kick many goals himself.

Good score Involvements and great goal assists per game.

I thought the rookieing of Charleson, a fellow mid defender, would make it real tough for Carroll to regain a list spot. But the Newy injury, the Kemp repurposing, plus a really good preseason showing really is looking like he should get a spot as a tallish mid def.

I think he is better than that. Yes, it would be fantastic if he kicked goals. So that is definitely an area of his game to work on. But in terms of that modern game of pushing into the midfield and then circling back to half forward, he is essentially the only one of our smaller forwards who can do it.

I think there is high correlation between our late season run in 2023 and the fact that Fog and Martin were in fantastic form playing that high half forward role.

The romantic in me says that he and his family are such huge Carlton fans that I would love to see him get another chance. It wasn’t his fault he couldn’t get a crack at things last year.

I have Fog in my 22 at the moment.

Selfless team player, can do some midfield minutes in rotations as required. Gives his all, great tackling, consistent.

Second small will need to have that high upside (hoping Motlop) but I see Fog as rock solid

Has plenty of talent, would fill out nicely, tallish and gutsy

Isn’t Charleson’s best attribute his kicking? We certainly need more class with our skills, so perhaps not so much for the defender but distribution.

Our own Dan Houston protege without the draft capital.
