I'm not overrating Haynes, he's a very good player but the injuries and age concern me as well. If he is fit he will be a part of our best side.Haynes is injury prone and 33 years old. Will be lucky to play 10 games. People seriously overrate players on here.
Not having a crack at Haynes but he is 33 and past his best. People seem to think he is still a top line player. I also don't agree with "Modern CHB" type. It's total defence now and different roles. You have a combination of talls, mobile talls and runners
He was brought in as cheap depth. It's what we need. He will play games and be more than handy.
As I said (and ususal suspects have jumped on) I hope we go past him and have players like Jack, Durdin/Phillips McGovern Cowan Young filling the spots to support Weitering. Means we are improving and doing very well
Just my take
Those positions haven't gone, it's just the way in which they are played which has changed. Away from being less one on one to zoning. The roles of full back CHB, Flanks and pockets very much exist but have changed quite a bit. You need a big key defender and a tall defender who is mobile and athletic, in modern terms FB and CHB.
We have options, but I am not sure at all which way we will go.
I'm hopeful with Silvagni because he is a smart footballer and fairly athletic. Durdin's body is no better than Haynes historically. But he has plenty of ability. Phillips is genuinely an unknown quantity as a key defender at AFL level. McGovern is a pinch hitter as a key defender and suited to that tall pocket player brilliantly. Cowan is not a key position player and not a part of the conversation but is a good pocket/flanker. Young has been ordinary for most of his time, he has a poor football and situational brain but he can play a role as a lock down player ok. We appeared to use him better towards the end of last season which was good, he needs a really simple role. For mine young needs to add some size and strength to play fullback and release Weitering.
I'll judge us when I see it, I just aren't overly excited by our second tall defender yet. Time will tell.
