Well he isnt the first player we have taken well above rating. We used to have a habit of trying to pluck a player we rate with the our 2nd pick. McHenry, Doedee and Pedlar were all such players from memory. Hopefully we have stopped that crap for now.

Sometimes the recruiters try and outsmart themselves.

Christian Howard rings a bell.

First pick of draft - first round draft pick is always best available player
Second pick of draft - first or second round pick is best need player *this is where we get caught out

Drafting players that would go 2nd and 3rd rounders but we rate them so much we dont want to risk them lasting until our 3rd pick in the high 20s or low 30s. We know they arent a first rounder but we take them anyway type of thing.

Its a dumb strategy and its cost us better talent

This is a weird thing you've made up in your mind.

The fact that some 16 year olds who have watched YouTube videos have someone ranked at 35 doesn't mean anything.

The clubs watch the players dozens of times over multiple years.

There's not an agreed order from the draft experts that clubs stray from. There's no such thing as amateur draft experts.

Strange take,

All clubs go into a draft with a set talent order.

Hence why clubs trade up or even trade down if they are satisfied their player will still be available

It seems to me everyone’s opinions of how Clubs Draft are derived from commentary in the media …… commentary by Clubs often to appease supporters hope & excitement

What recruiters look at with players is often very different to what amateur draft watchers see ….. which is what players do with ball in hand ….. which over a 100 min of footy is a very small, but granted important, component of a players game

Its almost impossible for an amateur draft watcher to get an accurate picture of a player. So I dont even bother. Watching 2 minutes of highlights from a state carnival or their club matches is not going to inform at all. I remember watching an u18 grand final when they used to be part of the build up to the main match on GF day. Back early 2000s I think. And this one player absolutely ripped the opposition apart on GF day and I thought he was a certainty to be drafted. Nope, not even a rookie spot lol.

Particularly on TV ....it's very difficult to see players positioning and running patterns, with so many in-tight shots

I watch how a player reacts to being tackled, or pressured ......is he composed, does he instinctively know how to handle the situation ...or does he panic or simply accede to the pressure

Nat Fyfe averaged 25 touches and 4 clearances a game in his second season after being drafted as a scrawny tall

If he's genuinely elite he should be front and centre in his second season. Third season at the latest
Hmmh. Curtin (197) has nearly 3 inches on Fyfe (190). He‘s only a couple of inches shorter than many ruckmen. IMO doubtful that he will grow into his body and a midfield game as quickly as Fyfe did. Curtin‘s role will be different to Fyfe‘s.

Perhaps we just try Curtin in the ruck at times, which would give us an extra midfielder around the ball.

I think McHenry was about right in terms of other predictions and Doedee was a good pick, remove the ACLs and he would have been an awesome pick.

What about the Bont then? 194cm played 16 games in year 1 averaging 16 disposals and then 21 in year 2 averaging 21 disposals with 5 clearances. Bont was born late November too, so only 18 years and a 4 months old when his first season started. Curtin born early March, so about 8 months older. Fyfe may not have been a good comparison, but Bont is.

There you have it. Both comparisons made so far have been with probably the two best mids in the comp in the last 10 years. Realistic? Nope. If it was that easy to find a Fyfe or a Bint then Curtin would have gone at pick 1.

If Butts and Keane are fit, I wonder if they’ll use Nick Murray in the ruck if needed. He’s looked okay there the few times he’s done it.
Would be interesting to see him thump the other ruckman around. He just about injures everyone near him when the balls there as it is, I wonder what would happen if he's instructed to actually jump into a guy

Yeah trading pick 46 instead of moving on a cooked Smith and listing a ruck at the draft is looking like a really good move now😏
Do you really think an 18 YO Ruck Draftee was going to be able to step in and play ......
