Player Watch #21 Errol Gulden - born to play: 2024 All Australian

It comes as a shock when he stuffs up.a pass.

yes ... and it is going to happen ... but my goodness, gulden is a remarkable young footballer ... even when he's not the star of the show you feel good when he's got the ball, you just know there's a chance something good will happen
right from his first game last season gulden has the knack of making things happen, and he improves individuals around him and the team, although he's one of several of our young brigade who do that
gulden, warner, mcinerney ... how damn good is it that those three are swans!?!

Great stat in the Footy Live App preview of the Carlton game today:

The Swans hae scored from 48.5% of Errol Gulden's kicks into the forward 50 - the second-best percentage of the top-50 kicks into the forward 50 in the league

Very impressive and even wilder when you consider that I don't think Errol's kicking anywhere near as well as he is capable of right now.

I'd also add Blakey to that list. Doesn't quite get the end rewards given he's in the back line but he's every bit as damaging and influential as those three.

for me, blakey almost goes without saying ... i was a fan even in his grim days early last season, always been a fan ...
but you're right, he's as influential as the younger three, possibly more so in that there's hardly anyone in the league like him

And we haven't yet seen the best of them!

Errol old son after that goal tonight you don't deserve to be way down on page 2.

Probably the most difficult goal to kick tonight.
At 50 plus, a set shot on the wrong angle for a left footer.
Just before Papley had sprayed a much easier shot that didn't register a score.

By comparison Errol seized the moment. He went back, few deep breaths, composed himself and slotted the goal to put us in front.
Mind you he had a decent final qtr all round registering 8 possessions (5 contested).

Back to the top of page 1 for you. :)

didn't want to kick for goal - looking to pass it off :)

I love how he acknowledged the Bloods crowd after the goal. Such a good young person.

really controlled that left wing in the 2nd half, so tough for a kid his size and worked hard to get back out and help the defense, very few 19 year olds look so assured and look like they belong at the level as this kid

The amazing thing about Errol is that he can be relied upon. I don't go into games wondering which Errol will turn up like I do a lot of younger players. I know he will turn up and he will play well and that is huge for a player his age.

Yep. Totally agree.

Jackson deservedly won the Rising Star last year but Errol missed a lot of footy. I doubt he even thinks about it.

how many commentators call him Golden
If they can't get Sam Reid's name right after 12 years in the game, how the hell can we think they'd get Errol's correct after 1 season?

Lucky they don't call him Eric
or Fred, Lucios, Aristotle, Zander etc, etc ....

I feel like that entire 30 seconds where he kicked his goal and then celebrated epitomised why he's such a quality player, and why we're so lucky to have him.

Goes back with the ball and runs into goal, looks calm, almost cold as ice, like he's got nothing more than a carton of beer in a bet with a mate riding on this kick.

Then he slots it and just explodes. I literally said, "Wow" at the screen seeing him turn to the crowd and go full beast mode like that. Youthful exuberance he has in spades, but I didn't think he had that kind of aggression in him.

He has such a huge passion for the game but importantly has the poise and maturity to disguise it when he needs to. Bloody love him.

Future captain, without a doubt in my mind. He really reminds me of Dayne Zorko in a lot of ways - Zorko's more physical (although Errol could get there for all I know), but I think Errol demonstrates a lot similar traits in terms of being smaller in stature, his leadership, nous for the game, dead-eye skill by foot in particular, and excellent around the goals.

Was late sitting down to watch it on Saturday and the first thing I see is an ugly scoreboard and Hayward being out marked by Jackson in our D50… minutes later the same player getting the better of Lloydy. We were looking like a bit of a rabble at that point in time… thankfully we got better.
On Gulden’s kick, Carey let out a feint pleasured moan as it went thru… he loved it!

I liked the way early in his first year that he was telling older players where to be/what to do/his thoughts. Incredibly mature and confident in his knowledge of how to play the game better.
