I never doubted Gulden.

McDonald on the other hand I had my concerns.

Yeah sorry was talking specifically Gulden.

Gulden leaving would be a massive blow more so than any of the others , not only because he is arguably our best player, but an academy guy going would sting.

Sounds promising

yeah ... he's a franchise player ... gotta make sure he's a one-club player
with gulden we'll always be a chance to contend

From what his manager said today I am incredibly confident/ almost certain.

Deep in discussions, on record publically he wants to stay, just the years part.

You don't get to this point if you're planning on leaving

What do we think, 4 x $800k?
Interesting to hear Twoomey say the new CBA is going to throw up some monster contract numbers not seen or thought of before.

I'd say the negotiating was the Swans offering him 7 years and he only wanted 4 to take him to FA and then cash-in even bigger.

I would think the Swans would be happy with 4 years as well as the current CBA ends in 2027 a year before Gulden's reported new contract does. As seen with the current CBA the salary tends to jump up considerably with new CBA, so more cap room should become available when Gulden is next out of contract.

I think the decision on whether to sign a very long term contract - both by the club and the player - is, in part, about injury risk. Any player is going to get less per year on a long term contract than they would on a shorter contract because the club is taking on most of the risk that injury will derail a career. On a shorter contract, the player takes on much of that risk.

So if a player has declined the option of a very long contract (and that may or may not apply in Gulden's case), it doesn't have to indicate lower willingness to emotionally commit in the long-term. It could in part be about risk appetite.

Of course there are other factors too, like how easy or hard it is to project forward the kind of player someone might become. That's less relevant to Gulden than McDonald, say, given how quickly he (Gulden) has reached his current level and how consistently he plays close to his best.

And then the upcoming upheaval in the CBA / total salary cap, and how that is going to change the way the cap is distributed between starts, foot soldiers and plodders, adds another layer of uncertainty that is particular to contract negotiations this year and next.

Unless we see more significant salary cap increases coupled with growth of the game, the comp won't be able to sustain these exorbitant wages. Eventually s**t is going to hit the fan for a club somewhere down the line who has thrown big money at multiple players only have it not work out and plummet them into the doldrums for a couple of decades after stuffing up their list management. Afl has to step in with some sort of contingency otherwise prepare to give handouts and priority picks to clubs who self sabotaged. Not to mention there will be clubs who get poached and struggle to replace them.

Imo there also has to be something done to stop faux bids. There's no doubt when big money starts flying around clubs will use whatever tactics they can. I have absolutely 0 doubt freo is bidding for Gulden with no intention what so ever to sign him, so that we pay overs in the hopes we have no choice but to give up Logan. We've left ourselves open leaving so many players out of contract at the same time.

When shit hits the fan that club can fold and move to Alice Springs for all I care. Not a fan of priority picks or handouts outside of an expansion club entering the draft

The false bidding is real, and it stinks.
