So this is my thinking. I am thinking this could be an all encompassing 21st century mock draft. This is we line up every player drafted in the 21st century as an 18 year old, knowing the players they became and we decide who goes where.

For the draft order I am thinking the current ladder

So

Pick 1 - North Melbourne
Pick 2 - Richmond
Pick 3 - West Coast
Pick 4 - Adelaide
Pick 5 - St Kilda
Pick 6 - Brisbane
Pick 7 - Hawthorn
Pick 8 - Western Bulldogs
Pick 9 - Melbourne
Pick 10 - Gold Coast
Pick 11 - GWS
Pick 12 - Fremantle
Pick 13 - Collingwood
Pick 14 - Geelong
Pick 15 - Port Adelaide
Pick 16 - Essendon
Pick 17 - Carlton
Pick 18 - Sydney

and so on for 3 rounds.

The rules are to treat this like an actual mock draft, so pick the player who is either best available or best suits your list.

So my general idea is people will nominate a club they want to pick for, and hopefully we get enough people who want to participate so we don't have any double ups. I hope to go for 3 rounds but we will see how it goes.

Now the rule here is that you are only able to pick players who were drafted in the 2000 draft or later, I know technically 2000 is not the 21st century but these players would have only started playing in 2001 which is the 21st century. I have also made some lists of players who have won the All Australian at least 3 times, but also included some other awards too, but by no means do you only need to select from the list.

You are also free to nominate someone who has been retired for 5 years, or if you feel really confident, happy to include a player who is only in their second year, if you believe they have enough talent to be ahead of more established players. For instance it would not surprise me if Nick Daicos or Harley Reid end up in the first or second rounds despite having very little experience compared to a lot of players on this list.

So here we go

Gee, there are some guns slipping down the order.

I have a player who I rate in the top 10 from this period who hasn't been selected in the first 37 picks!

It is one of the reasons I am really enjoying this process. In some ways it is a lot more fun, and a lot more interesting than people simply listing who they see as the best 20 players or so of the 21st century. Listing players like that is very different to listing them in a real (simulated) draft.

I think it shows that in a real draft people are more likely to take KP players than midfielders, though with exceptions of course. Also how Hawkins dropped so low I have no idea :p

benefit of hindsight too

there's been a genuine scarcity of tall forwards in the competition over the last 24 years, with the game moving to athletic types and the best talls playing behind the ball

As I mentioned previously.

Ablett, Judd, Dusty and perhaps a few others are benchmarked at 100

We've then got 100 other mids benchmarked at 90. Those second tier players are reasonably even to the point that you could pick them up later and still have asupremely talented player.

My next mid might last, it might not, but wasn't worth taking in the first two rounds. As a consequence, my 4th player might well and truly be gone.

You could pick up Kerr, Noah Anderson, Sam Mitchell, Walsh and they're all elite players. It doesn't matter as much as a KPP

Yeah, agreed.

I know my next pick will be needs based, ignoring best available (and probably my favourite player).

I think it will also be interesting to see how the draft pans out when starting from scratch as people are largely influenced by existing lists in this one (I know I would have taken Hawkins with my 2nd pick had I not been satisfied that the key forward stocks, with Riewoldt, were already okay). Similarly, Carlton don't need key forwards, Sydney went for a key defender, other teams are pretty stacked for mids already, etc.

Yep. Going for a draft style where you take into account current lists and current list needs is very different to creating 18 teams from scratch.

To be honest I hope we get both as I would love to participate in creating one of those 18 teams from scratch if someone wants to make such a thread after this. Would be very interesting.

I'd be happy to. I almost started it when one of the picks was taking way too long but thought I better be polite and let this one conclude so it doesn't lose it's traffic/momentum.

You alright if I give it a shot when this one is done?

Completely fine with it. I am just enjoying the discussion and different perspectives, and how different these drafts are to the top 10 best players of the 21st century on the main board.

reggie has probably selected the best 1-2 punch in the league from our combos so far (GAJ and Jezza), but if he's not responsive he will have Barnaby French auto selected for his third pick. ;)

Proven hard running midfielder, Small forward (Obviously your fav player), young mid.

I certainly considered picking him.

But Sydney are short of Elite KPF players and the Mids can hold up

Yep. Guys like Josh Kennedy (Sydney) have not been taken yet. Plenty of elite midfielders still in this draft.

Plenty of very good key defenders and halfbacks too.

To be Robert Murphy is someone I would seriously be considering right now.

I had a list of 8 mids and 1 ruck ready to go last night and I can't believe that the full list is still available!

Richmond could do with a gun wingman and strongly considered drafting Bartel, Hayes, Daicos, Sidebottom, Neale and S Mitchell to fill the role in their formative seasons before settling in as an inside mid. However, there is a ruckman who is still on the board who could well make the Tigers unbeatable palming the ball to Ablett and Martin who then put the ball into the path of a leading Cameron or Lynch.

Pick 38 - Richmond - Nic Naitanui

I have to say I'm shocked at all of the rucks that have already been taken.

Cox and Gawn are understandable as generational talents that also essentially give you an extra prolific midfielder. The rest, I think you can find value via trade/free agency/later picks.

The great Brisbane, Geelong, Hawthorn and Richmond sides this century overall had some decent but not world beater ruckmen. How many AAs between them as ruckmen?

NicNat was a very good player, but Richmond have Nank for a few years yet and could do with elite wing/mids and forward/mids primarily.

Jared Brennan for a versatile ruck?
