So this is my thinking. I am thinking this could be an all encompassing 21st century mock draft. This is we line up every player drafted in the 21st century as an 18 year old, knowing the players they became and we decide who goes where.

For the draft order I am thinking the current ladder

So

Pick 1 - North Melbourne
Pick 2 - Richmond
Pick 3 - West Coast
Pick 4 - Adelaide
Pick 5 - St Kilda
Pick 6 - Brisbane
Pick 7 - Hawthorn
Pick 8 - Western Bulldogs
Pick 9 - Melbourne
Pick 10 - Gold Coast
Pick 11 - GWS
Pick 12 - Fremantle
Pick 13 - Collingwood
Pick 14 - Geelong
Pick 15 - Port Adelaide
Pick 16 - Essendon
Pick 17 - Carlton
Pick 18 - Sydney

and so on for 3 rounds.

The rules are to treat this like an actual mock draft, so pick the player who is either best available or best suits your list.

So my general idea is people will nominate a club they want to pick for, and hopefully we get enough people who want to participate so we don't have any double ups. I hope to go for 3 rounds but we will see how it goes.

Now the rule here is that you are only able to pick players who were drafted in the 2000 draft or later, I know technically 2000 is not the 21st century but these players would have only started playing in 2001 which is the 21st century. I have also made some lists of players who have won the All Australian at least 3 times, but also included some other awards too, but by no means do you only need to select from the list.

You are also free to nominate someone who has been retired for 5 years, or if you feel really confident, happy to include a player who is only in their second year, if you believe they have enough talent to be ahead of more established players. For instance it would not surprise me if Nick Daicos or Harley Reid end up in the first or second rounds despite having very little experience compared to a lot of players on this list.

So here we go

Because there's some absolute greats already picked and we are barely 35 picks in?

Is Taylor in the best 35 players of the last 25 years? No way imo.

Great young player but the likes of Rance, Taylor, McGovern, Stewart are well ahead of him before even getting to forwards, mids etc.

I'm not sure what others opinions are, but I'm happy to do 20+ rounds tbh if people are willing.

40 odd would do me fine.

Pick 45

Lachie Neale.

Pick 47 - Nick Daicos

After adding to our KPD stocks at both ends it's time to add some outside run. Daicos uncontested style will add a real point of difference to our midfield.

I think there has been some talk of doing this but as a seperate thread after this is done.
Not much point drafting to club needs if you’re picking a team from scratch anyway, would have changed some picks I think.

With Pick 49 in the 21st Century Mock Draft, the Collingwood Football Club select Jacob Weitering.

A former number 1 draft pick, Weitering is already a multiple club best and fairest winner, and whilst never been selected in the final team, he has been selected in the All Australian squad on four occasions. The Carlton faithful will assure you he should already have at least two AA guernseys to hid name already.

Weitering is the perfect fit for Collingwood, who unfortunately lost Nathan Murphy prematurely and will complement Darcy Moore and the likes of Quaynor, Maynard and Noble for years to come.

Premierships are built on defence and leadership, and will be a fantastic addition to the club with our other recruits Joel Selwood and Tom Hawkins.

Weitering in a Collingwood guernsey? Glorious.

3 rounds are nearly up. Have we decided if we're doing 3, 4 or 5 rounds? (before we do the 'from scratch" version)

I think we can either go to the end of the 3rd round and possibly do a 4th if people are keen, but after that the new "starting from scratch" team which likely will be quite different.

I also nominate Sydney for my team in your thread, I am already thinking of strategies for drafting :p

I was hoping 4 rounds - gives us sufficient opportunity to plug through holes and there are still plenty of superstars still available.

Yes I think 4 rounds is good too.

I really do like the idea of imagining real world drafts rather than "who are the best players of the 21st century" as I think framing it around a real world draft helps focus things better, helps people realise what players are actually more important.

For instance I am not sure how many people would have Brian Lake in their best 20 players of the 21st Century, but here it is very reasonable that he has gone in there.

Franklin is #1 in every scenario. KPFs will be hot in demand early

Agreed. A lot of people have Ablett Jnr as the better player (a fair argument can be made) but in the real world Buddy would get picked over Ablett every day of the week.

Im assuming its a simulation and all players in their prime

Also for your version are we assuming all players are drafted at 18 and develop, or all players are drafted in their prime?

I am personally hoping for the former as it rewards players who had long careers at a high level rather than players that only saw their peak for a couple of seasons.

I feel like going for more of a simulation of which team wins in their prime

I think Dustin Martin is heavily affected by this. His best was easily top 5 in the 21st Century but he took years and years to get there, only peaked for 4 or 5 seasons and then dipped again. If you take his entire career into consideration he isn't in the top 5, but if you only take his peak then he is.

I think the assumption is you are drafting them when they were drafted (which is why when the Tony Lockett of 2001 was selected - you'd get the 36 year old, 2001 version of Tony Lockett whereas if you draft Franklin, you are getting the 18 year old, 2004 version). Thus, you are judging them on their whole career and their total output.

In answer to Purple though, when you look at a team sheet of named players to form an assessment, you are not doing so by looking at them as 18 year olds in isolation. You are assessing the totality of who they are as a player (their prime and everything else they did or didn't produce) - just as you do when you are assessing a team of the century, team of the decade, etc.

(Otherwise, you'll end up rating someone like John Anthony highly based on that single season he kicked 50 goals (higher than Cyril Rioli's best season for example) rather than look at them as total players where obviously Anthony was no good (and Cyril a significant contributor)).

Based on list needs I think Collingwood is doing super well there. I mean everyone is doing well, well mostly as there is one questionable team there, but I think Collingwood is winning. Their selections just fill such obvious needs.
