So this is my thinking. I am thinking this could be an all encompassing 21st century mock draft. This is we line up every player drafted in the 21st century as an 18 year old, knowing the players they became and we decide who goes where.

For the draft order I am thinking the current ladder

So

Pick 1 - North Melbourne
Pick 2 - Richmond
Pick 3 - West Coast
Pick 4 - Adelaide
Pick 5 - St Kilda
Pick 6 - Brisbane
Pick 7 - Hawthorn
Pick 8 - Western Bulldogs
Pick 9 - Melbourne
Pick 10 - Gold Coast
Pick 11 - GWS
Pick 12 - Fremantle
Pick 13 - Collingwood
Pick 14 - Geelong
Pick 15 - Port Adelaide
Pick 16 - Essendon
Pick 17 - Carlton
Pick 18 - Sydney

and so on for 3 rounds.

The rules are to treat this like an actual mock draft, so pick the player who is either best available or best suits your list.

So my general idea is people will nominate a club they want to pick for, and hopefully we get enough people who want to participate so we don't have any double ups. I hope to go for 3 rounds but we will see how it goes.

Now the rule here is that you are only able to pick players who were drafted in the 2000 draft or later, I know technically 2000 is not the 21st century but these players would have only started playing in 2001 which is the 21st century. I have also made some lists of players who have won the All Australian at least 3 times, but also included some other awards too, but by no means do you only need to select from the list.

You are also free to nominate someone who has been retired for 5 years, or if you feel really confident, happy to include a player who is only in their second year, if you believe they have enough talent to be ahead of more established players. For instance it would not surprise me if Nick Daicos or Harley Reid end up in the first or second rounds despite having very little experience compared to a lot of players on this list.

So here we go

WCE pick 57 - Patrick Cripps

We really need a contested possession beast in our midfield. I ended up picking Cripps as he's a Brownlow medallist, he can now go forward and kick goals too. (I want versatility)

For this reason he won out over Oliver and co.

Strongly though about doing a left of field pick like Lecras or Didak but peak Cripps really is what we need badly. (Big fan of the angry midget from Port too but I went for size)

Adelaide are up.

I'd be shocked if you didn't take Kennedy and didn't consider it somewhat of a no brainer.

More finals proven than Cripps (unbelievable even when his team mates faltered in the '16 GF etc).
I went Cripps due to versatility over Kennedy. I think he's a bit better in just about every area.

Kennedy may be more finals proven but he had a really good team around him too.

My last crows choice was tough, but I think this guy puts a cherry on top of their already very talented forward line. Getting another small to crumb to Thilthorpe, Fogarty and Walker alongside Rankine a clear need.

Consider me shocked! No doubt Cripps is a superb choice, but I'd put JPK's lack of Brownlow more down to being in sides with more vote stealers. 2012-2016 era he had some stiff competition too (peak GAJ/Swan/Dangerfield/Fyfe/Selwood/Cotchin/Watson). Kennedy was just so good through all of those finals series and unlucky not to be a multiple flag winner. But maybe Cripps will start a finals run like that himself.

Now the question is do I go for Kennedy after singing his praises? We've already selected two bulldozing, line breaking midfielders - JPK would be a viable option to shovel it out to them though.

I'm actually going a little left of field with this one however, for a player more versatile.

St Kilda select Shaun Burgoyne.

We need some silk. An ultra elite ball user and decision maker. The Saints can slot him in as a creative forward flanker or outside wingman (think the Wood or Hill role) for smooth inside 50 entries. But he can just as easily join the midfield crew or be the playmaker off half back - alongside Sinclair we can improve our ball movement significantly and release Wanganeen-Milera to the wing so that he can be even more of an attacking weapon.

Burgoyne came in clutch in big finals too, the Cats know all about it...

Hardly left field imo. Gun

Well I only say that as there are many multiple All Australian, even Brownlow winners remaining. But Hawthorn's champion team was built off versatile, silky smooth skill operators like Burgoyne. And he was more than handy before that at Port too.

As good as he was, I'm not sure how many players left would've actually been selecting him next?

Was on my shortlist.
Elite ball users are more important than ever and Burgoyne can play anywhere.
Such a dangerous (deadly) player with ball in hand and at his best could burst through stoppages/congestion as well.

As I said, I considered a winger for this selection for Brisbane and I'm stoked that my pick for the best winger of the past 20 years is still available. For me he was unlucky not to get the Norm Smith in the GF replay in his second year, and across his career he averages 23 disposals, 5 marks, 3 inside 50's and 2 rebound 50's whilst being not far away from 200 goals.

Ayres medallist and B&F in what should have been a premiership year (2018). Hell of a player.

I.Smith and Duncan might be up there for #2 and 3 wingmen drafted this century (probably forgetting a few...Lugg is headed that way...Dal Santo, Lewis, Goddard and Montagna spent time on the wing too - not many elite wingmen remained there). The fact that Duncan, Smith and Sidey have one AA between them is a bit of a joke.

Small forwards struggle to get All Australians too, and if you are a small defender you can basically forget about it.

Yeah, that's fair, but he's still the best IMO. All are very good.

Yeah I would probably have Sidebottom out in front as a pure wingman, as a couple of others like Dal Santo still did their best work around the stoppages.

I think people have slept on Nicky Dal a bit - skills up there with the best, 3 time AA (close to a Brownlow in 2005), a very big part of what made that "almost" Saints side tick in their contending years ('04, '05, '09, '10). 300 plus gamer who was still pure class at NM.

Anyway there's still time yet.

Edit: finished lists

North Melbourne - Lance Franklin, Scott Pendlebury, Steve Johnson, Darcy Moore
Richmond - Gary Ablett Jnr, Jeremy Cameron, Nic Naitanui, James Bartel
West Coast - Max Gawn, Luke Hodge, Cyril Rioli, Patrick Cripps
Adelaide - Chris Judd, Brodie Grundy, Michael Hurley, Luke Breust
St Kilda - Patrick Dangerfield, Dane Swan, Toby Greene, Shaun Burgoyne
Brisbane - Dean Cox, Harry Taylor, Andrew Mackie, Steele Sidebottom

What I'd have as the best 22 for these two:

Adelaide:

Max Michaelanny - Jordan Butts - Josh Worrell
Brodie Smith - Michael Hurley - Mitchell Hinge
Lachlan Sholl - Chris Judd - Luke Nankervis
Izak Rankine - Taylor Walker - Ben Keays
Luke Breust - Darcy Fogarty - Riley Thilthorpe
Brodie Grundy - Jordan Dawson - Rory Laird
Chayce Jones - Jake Soligo - Josh Rachele - Matt Crouch

Brisbane:

Andrew Mackie - Harris Andrews - Brandon Starcevich
Conor McKenna - Harry Taylor - Keidean Coleman
Steele Sidebottom - Jarrod Berry - Hugh McCluggage
Cameron Rayner - Joe Daniher - Callum Ah Chee
Charlie Cameron - Eric Hipwood - Lincoln McCarthy
Dean Cox - Josh Dunkley - Lachie Neale
Darcy Wilmot - Will Ashcroft - Dayne Zorko - Zac Bailey

I'm going to a) pretend my players develop/peak as early as Judd (year 3) while the late 20s players last the distance and b) exclude any players currently 30 or older - so a 2027-2029 era team.

Anyway my best 22:

FB: Battle Howard Webster
HB: Burgoyne Wilkie Sinclair

C: Wanganeen-Milera Swan Wilson
FOL: Marshall Steele Dangerfield

HF: Greene Caminiti Owens
FF: Higgins King Henry

IC: Phillipou Sharman Windhager Schoenmaker

We're backing in our talls, or will shark one via FA if necessary. The defence and defensive system is sound, but Burgoyne's high quality rebound when he's there will help.

Elite midfielders with versatility to cover other positions, game changers and expert readers of the game were needed. A mix of inside grunt and outside silk.

I like to think we've recruited 4 winners with the necessary X factor to do what Lyon teams can struggle to do: SCORE.

There are 1200 goals and 800 goal assists between these players, all of whom can roll through midfield or the forward positions.

I think Gulden is really establishing himself. There are others that I think are players that would be great wingmen if given the chance but are too good to leave out there so get more of an inside/outside role like Josh Kelly, Zach Merrett, etc.

Like McCluggage, Josh Daicos is someone that will probably spend his whole career out there and is beginning to forge a decent reputation.

Hawthorn selection is up.

Very tempting to just go best available (would have had Mitchell lasted) and if so, would probably pick JPK for the midfield or Robbie Gray for the forward line, but am going to go boring with the last pick and make another structural selection...

That is - to pick another key defender. Selected Harris Andrews (to replace Frost) last round and will select another to:
(a) release Sicily to his natural position as a 3rd tall with full license to intercept and rebound
(b) release Weddle to play up the ground as a tall, fast, damaging wingman
(c) release Scrimshaw to play on guys his own size and do the "Birchall thing" with his rebound.

Not as sexy a name on paper but improves the whole team more IMO.

With the 61st pick of this draft, Hawthorn select....Steven May

P.S. There was an argument in the recruiting room between Sam Taylor and Steven May. In the end, it was decided that whilst Taylor is probably the better interceptor and slots into Sicily's CHB role more easily, with Sicily, Andrews and Scrimshaw back there - there is more than enough intercepting power as it is. Taylor's peak has been shorter and has had more injury concerns whilst Steven May will lock down FB for a decade plus and let Andrew roam on the 2nd tall.

Good luck scoring against Hawthorn :)

The Hawthorn 22:

B: Blake Hardwick, Steven May, James Sicily
HB: Jack Scrimshaw, Harris Andrews, Karl Amon
C: Josh Weddle, Christian Petracca, Will Day
HF: Dylan Moore, Nick Riewoldt, Jack Ginnivan
F: Luke Breust, Mitch Lewis, Mabior Chol
R: Lloyd Meek, James Worpel, Jai Newcombe
I: From: Jarman Impey, Nick Watson, Connor McDonald, Cam McKenzie, Massimo D'Ambrosio, Connor Nash, Calsher Dear, Changkuoth Jiath, Josh Ward.

Pick 62 - Western Bulldogs - Josh Gibson

This was not an easy selection as I realllly want to take Brett Deledio here but for needs Gibson is the perfect fit and pairs really nicely with the earlier McGovern pick as a different type of defender.

2 x B&F winner in premiership years is no joke.

Can play tall, can play small and shut down his opposition as one of the most prolific spoilers.

But then also a great kick of the football as one of Hawthorn’s many laser left footers of the era.

There are a heap of really good players available as well - I want to give them shout outs but don’t want to ruin it for those still drafting 😄

MarcMaverick you’re up!

Wow that defence has strengthened a lot. The forward line looks much more scary too.
