So this is my thinking. I am thinking this could be an all encompassing 21st century mock draft. This is we line up every player drafted in the 21st century as an 18 year old, knowing the players they became and we decide who goes where.

For the draft order I am thinking the current ladder

So

Pick 1 - North Melbourne
Pick 2 - Richmond
Pick 3 - West Coast
Pick 4 - Adelaide
Pick 5 - St Kilda
Pick 6 - Brisbane
Pick 7 - Hawthorn
Pick 8 - Western Bulldogs
Pick 9 - Melbourne
Pick 10 - Gold Coast
Pick 11 - GWS
Pick 12 - Fremantle
Pick 13 - Collingwood
Pick 14 - Geelong
Pick 15 - Port Adelaide
Pick 16 - Essendon
Pick 17 - Carlton
Pick 18 - Sydney

and so on for 3 rounds.

The rules are to treat this like an actual mock draft, so pick the player who is either best available or best suits your list.

So my general idea is people will nominate a club they want to pick for, and hopefully we get enough people who want to participate so we don't have any double ups. I hope to go for 3 rounds but we will see how it goes.

Now the rule here is that you are only able to pick players who were drafted in the 2000 draft or later, I know technically 2000 is not the 21st century but these players would have only started playing in 2001 which is the 21st century. I have also made some lists of players who have won the All Australian at least 3 times, but also included some other awards too, but by no means do you only need to select from the list.

You are also free to nominate someone who has been retired for 5 years, or if you feel really confident, happy to include a player who is only in their second year, if you believe they have enough talent to be ahead of more established players. For instance it would not surprise me if Nick Daicos or Harley Reid end up in the first or second rounds despite having very little experience compared to a lot of players on this list.

So here we go

Bulldogs best 22 for 2025

R: English - Bontempelli - Liberatore

Really stiffened up the backline with McGovern and Gibson which was incredibly important with us currently playing Khamis and Lobb as our KPDs (good thing Curnow couldn’t kick straight on the weekend!). But they also give us a surprising amount of offense as well - McGovern has often been used as designated kicker from defense while his intercept game is incredible and Gibson is excellent with ball in hand as well but his main focus will be shutdown roles and team defense.

Betts and Weightman up forward at the feet of JUH, Naughton and the resting ruck of English/Darcy is a scary prospect for years to come.

Bontempelli will start forward before becoming the midfielder we know and love. I couldn’t go past him, simply the best available at the time by a mile for mine. He is arguably the best player in the comp across the last 6 seasons and the best right now. Only other players to have multiple AFLPA MVP awards available in this draft were Ablett, Judd and Fyfe.
5 x AA
5 x club B&F
2 x best captain award
And at 28 years of age and looking in great nick - more to come you’d think.

Alrighty....This is my final team.

Given what I was starting with, I'm really pleased.

Plenty of scoring power. Especially given a dominant ruck and players that can finally get of the offense.

Very solid defense
Pretty dynamic midfield
X factor
Leaders
Power and some speed

Still has Chol, though.

Chose Chol over Gunston, Dear or starting Nick Watson.

Been pleasantly surprised with him this season. Has kicked 25 goals, 7 assists, been flying for marks when outnumbered to bring the ball to ground for all our smalls and chopping out in the ruck. The thing that has impressed me most however, has been his tackling. He's laid 48 tackles already this season - that's more than any other key forward in the comp. He's been keeping the ball in the forward line and creating opportunities for the others.

That's Chol. He sucks you in first year then spuds it up after. I look forward to his inevitable crash next year.

Haha, fair enough. If/when that happens, more than happy to slot Dear (or Watson) in who are both developing at a rate of knots.

P.S. Still prefer Riewoldt, Lewis and Chol to Daniher, Hipwood and (checks team: McCarthy) :p ;)

WilloTree If you are looking for a small forward - might I suggest Charlie Cameron or Tom Papley? Or you could go one of your boys, like Sonny Walters or Paul Medhurst.

or if you need a gun half forward - you could go Robbie Gray or Paul Chapman (edit: Chapman drafted in '99)

All those guys look good, and The Chad. A couple more I'm looking at as well. Ideally someone who can give us a couple of rotations through the middle as well.

Also with the 22 round version we will be doing in the near future I imagine people will be leaning in on their own teams players a bit more in the later rounds because once you are hundreds of players in people just naturally know the not stars of their own list better than they do other peoples lists. In saying that though even in round 22 there would still be a lot of very good players on the board and people who know other teams lists well over the last 20 years or so will likely do very well.

So many really good options even at this point. How Josh Kennedy (Mid) has not been taken I have no idea. Not as explosive as The Chad but extremely hard at it.
Oh Kennedy is next best available, but we're OK for starting mids - Rowell, Anderson, Miller, Flanders and we've just added Reid. Just need someone a bit dynamic to take a rotation or two. Really should be picking a sm/med forward here.

Has Charlie Cameron been taken? Papley would also be a good option I imagine.

Also always rated Bayley Fritsch.

Meh. My smalls group is elite. And yeah, Breust would be the one that plays as a pseudo-medium. Probably could have gone Gunston or Stringer instead

Stringer is a bit hit or miss though. His best is very good but you don't see his best nearly enough.
Believe me, I know. I love him but yeah, the inconsistency bugs me and he's so awkward structurally

Shame you can't draft a coach as there's a lot of talent there.

I've checked the list of picks so many times because I can't believe this guy is still available

Pick 56 - Richmond - Jimmy Bartel

Bartel will start his career on the wing before taking his Brownlow winning skills into the centre square in a few years time. Thrilled to have him at the Tigers. Handy quartet of Ablett, Cameron, NicNat and Bartel added to the club 😍

ArdentEagle

This guy just won the flag

Great choice - you even reunited him with Ablett! - and another one who it was baffling he slipped (albeit not as baffling as Mitchell). I hoped to pick him up this round but feared this would happen.

Jimmy was one of the best finals players this century, elite for (undersized) third tall forward cameos or off a forward flank as a creator, then a jet midfielder full of class and skill - but still damn tough as well.

Bartel's poise would've suited my Dangerswan midfield perfectly, but it wasn't to be...

Bartel > Mitchell. Bro.

Bartel > Mitchell. Bro.

Bartel is one of my favourite ever players and ultra versatile but there is no way that he was a better player than Mitchell.

Mitchell was far more consistently elite, week in week out, season in, season out. I mean, if you lined up the 10 best seasons between them, Mitchell would have at least 8 of the 10. Mitchell was a top 10 player in the league nearly every season for a decade whereas Bartel was at that level for 1-2 seasons.

Mitchell has nearly double the Brownlow votes Bartel does (Mitchell is top 3 all time and Bartel is not in the top 80). Mitchell finished top 2 in the Brownlow 3 times and Bartel finished top 12 once.

Mitchell won 5 best and fairests and Bartel won 0. In fact, Mitchell won the best and fairest more times than Bartel finished top 3.

Clarkson loved giving Coaches votes to role players which is why no Hawthorn player ever won the award under Clarko despite an era of dominance but even then, Mitchell has more than 300 Coaches votes more than Bartel (basically double).

Even Bartel's best feature (his performances in finals), Mitchell still probably trumps him. Mitchell easily won 'best finals player' in 2 of the threepeat years. Mitchell holds the record for most disposals in a finals series by a long way and when I last checked, had the highest disposal average (29) of any player in finals ever. Mitchell had 29+ touches and was BOG (or very close to) in 17 of his 26 finals, despite being the first tagged player (by the likes of Ling, Crowley, etc) in nearly every final where a hard tag was deployed (commonplace at the time). He was easily the key to stopping Hawthorn in September. Bartel had some amazing finals (including where he was used as the tagger and won a Norm Smith) but even then, no coach has used their best player as a tagger and Mitchell has more Norm Smith votes than Bartel does (18-13), having been very unlucky not to win it twice.

In this article (https://www.heraldsun.com.au/subscr...onymous&mode=premium&v21=HIGH-Segment-1-SCORE), a panel of expert judges all ranked their best players of the last 50 years. Sam Mitchell was voted the 23rd best of the last 50, whilst Bartel didn't receive a single vote.

Also Guardian Hawk should you create the new thread, if you still want to that is, as I hope this thread will be completed within 24 hours and it will likely take a few days to get enough people to start the next thread.

I'm going to start with everyone who participated in this draft, tag them, and add you (in place of eth-dog's double up) as nearly everyone here wanted to do the full 22 rounds - so I don't think recruitment will take all that long.

(Will set it up tonight as I'm at work now and am running a bit behind after too much time on Bigfooty :))

True. I would love to take Sydney if it is available but if not I will happily take anyone.

I Think we should do draft order by number of flags.
