HAWTHORN goalsneak Luke Breust is the Round 15 NAB Rising Star nominee. The 20-year-old was among the Hawks’ best in Sunday’s loss to Collingwood, with 16 possessions and five marks.

Breust, who already receives an Alan Toovey-style cheer from fans when he gets the ball, made his debut in Round 8 this year and has been in the team since.

Following the conclusion of the AFL trade period Hawthorn Football Club will have selections 33, 38 and 53 in the 2011 AFL National Draft.

With Breust playing the forward line role in 2011 and the club getting Gunston wouldn he be playing in his spot in 2012. So will Breust's pre season based around him playing more in the middle in 2012.

Summary
A few of us had huge wraps on Luke Bruest almost as soon as he was drafted to hawthorn on the rookie list. The erstwhile Houdinnihuddo commented to me soon after his first game in the development squad that not only Luke would play for hawthorn but was exactly the sort of player we needed. His quality and skill was evident to many Box Hill regulars from early on. An ability to gather the ball cleanly without decelerating and his goalsense marked him as a player to watch. There were some questions over his defensive pressure and work off the ball, which probably held his debut back. And would consequently be whispered about as the reasons behind his dropping for the finals.

Following a 29 goal season across 20 games for Box Hill in 2010, Luke was upgraded to the senior list in 2011 and made his debut vs St Kilda in round 8. Kicking 2 goals 2 behind, Breust was immediately adopted as a new cult hero by the hawthorn faithful. Cries of Breuuuuust echoed around the Southern Stand that day.

Breust quickly became known as the ‘super sub’ for his ability to influence a game on the scoreboard soon after being subbed on. His final tally of 30 goals 15 behind could have been so many more if he had started on the ground more often and wasn’t dropped in the finals. Another highlight of Breust’s year was being named as the round 15 NAB AFL Rising Star following his 15 disposals and 2 goals vs Collingwood.

So after a standout debut year, Luke enters 2012 knwoing exactly what he must do to further cement his position an deliver on the great promise that he shows. He is the specialised goal sneak that Hawthorn have been seeking for years, and sitting at the feet of Roughy, Hale and Buddy he shapes as a very dangerous prospect, And if his development continues as expected, Luke and Hawthorn are destined for big things. And I know in writing this that HoudiniHuddo is sitting back with a satisfied smile on his face.

Breust bounced back with a fantastic game against the Crows. He finally found the goals and had a couple of wonderful assists from spearing passes. Unfortunately he was heavily concussed late in the game following a sickening collision and will miss the next game against West Coast.

Luke is probably our most improved player this year, and is in our best 22. I noticed earlier in this thread that he needed to work on his defensive skills, well he has done that, and now they are very good, as is his attack on the ball. Love your work, Like.

Reall liked his improved defensive work. He seemed to improve his core over the summer which helped his strength in contests. Also loved seeing him enter the centre square at times.

Season 2009

Played in the first NAB Cup game against Melbourne at Launceston on Saturday 21st of February 2009.

Came on as one of the two substitute players to replace either the injured Osborne or Bateman early in the first half.

Heard Punky tell a story about his first appearance for Hawthorn in this game. It was an inauspicious debut for Hawthorn, as he didn't touch the ball at all. Kyle Cheney played on him and kept him without a stat.

Just did some highlights from one of his first few games, and the man was a scoring machine straight away. 30 goals in 2011 in his debut season, imagine if we had a kid come in and do that today. We got a bloody good one!
